This is Zheng Zheng, the mother of all the big dogs in my family. She’s quite impressive; it was she who led her parents to find me and Eva when she was just a puppy.
In the yard, Anna crouched down, cradling a mouthful of white, brown, and black Caucasian fur. Eva set down two buckets and scooped a generous spoonful of cornmeal batter, followed by a piece of pig offal that had just been taken out of the freezer, which appeared to be pig lung.
Eva held the pig lung up to Zheng Zheng's mouth, who took small bites, careful not to hurt Eva's fingers with her sharp teeth. Eva and Anna happily kissed her on the face.
Xu Li felt it was necessary to build a good relationship with this family, so she asked, "Can I pet her?"
"Of course! Zheng Zheng is very well-behaved."
Eva took Xu Li's hand and slowly guided it to stroke Zheng Zheng's neck. The soft fur felt smooth under her fingers. Zheng Zheng dropped the pig lung from her mouth into her bowl and tilted her head to stare at Xu Li, enjoying the affection while emitting contented sounds from her throat.
Soon, Xu Li picked up a bucket and followed the sisters to another corner of the yard. The chained Caucasian stood up excitedly upon seeing its owner, towering over Xu Li by a head, with front paws as large as small bowls.
"Da Hei is eating!" Xu Li exclaimed.
She scooped a large spoonful of cornmeal batter for him and noticed he was several sizes larger than Zheng Zheng. So she scooped another half spoonful and then held out a piece of pig lung, trembling slightly as she offered it to the Caucasian.
Da Hei didn’t take it but stared intently at Xu Li. Suddenly, Eva wrapped her arms around Xu Li's neck and kissed her cheek: "From now on, he’s family. Da Hei, you can’t bully him."
With a low growl, Da Hei made two soft sounds before gently taking the pig lung in his mouth. His warm breath brushed against Xu Li’s hand, causing a layer of sweat to form on his palm. Anna saw Da Hei accept the pig lung and happily said, "Da Hei is willing to eat food you offered; it seems he likes you."
"Really?" Xu Li grinned. After interacting with Zheng Zheng and Da Hei, getting close to Xiao Hei and Xiao Huang would be much easier. Looking at the two empty buckets in her hands and then at Xiao Huang quickly devouring the cornmeal batter in his bowl, she tilted her head and wiped away some sweat: "Is this enough for them?"
"Not enough! We still need to feed them in the afternoon, and then before bed tonight, we’ll give them a pig paw or tail and ears."
Anna crouched down again, watching Xiao Huang gobble up the cornmeal batter. She reached out and poked him on the nose playfully. Xiao Huang ignored her and continued eating; soon enough, his stainless steel bowl was being licked clean with loud slurping sounds.
Eva pulled Xu Li aside and proudly said, "Actually, Anna and I can understand what they say."
"Really?" Xu Li's eyes nearly popped out in disbelief. Eva nodded firmly: "Yes! But Dad, Mom, and my brother don’t believe that Anna and I can talk to them."
Xu Li rolled her eyes playfully and brought Eva over to Da Hei. At that moment, Da Hei was lying on the ground soaking up the sun with his tongue hanging out: "Da Hei, am I handsome?"
With a couple of low growls in response, Da Hei turned his head away dismissively. But Eva burst into giggles: "Da Hei says you’re a little dog!"
"I suspect you’re insulting me."
Xu Li went to the edge of the water basin to wash his hands. Afterward, he playfully tickled Eva, causing her to giggle. In a moment of distraction, their heads bumped together, and they both exclaimed in surprise. Xu Li quickly rubbed Eva's forehead and asked, "Are you okay?"
"Mm," Eva pouted and leaned her head closer to Xu Li, wanting him to continue rubbing her forehead. Suddenly, Xu Li felt a chill on his neck. He raised his hand to scratch it and looked around but saw nothing unusual. Shrugging it off, he rinsed out the bucket and turned it upside down by the water basin to let it dry.
