Ivan weighed his green-screen phone in his hand. “The signal here isn’t great; you won’t get anything out of it. Just leave it with my mom too. When she thinks you’ve adapted to life here, she’ll give it back to you.”
But what about my visa?
“Don’t worry about that. I’m a police officer; I have plenty of ways to help you sort it out.”
Ivan pulled out his police badge and waved it in front of Xu Li, smirking, “Let me introduce you to a few of my brothers.”
He then pulled over two burly men standing nearby. “This is Yuri, who works at the railway bureau in Bratsk. And this is Lao San, Vasily, who runs a small grocery store in Bratsk; he brings a batch of snacks from home every month.”
“Lao Si works at a hospital in Moscow, while Old Five is at a bank in Saint Petersburg. Old Liu is a jerk; he’s living with his girlfriend’s family in Novosibirsk. Those three don’t come around much, so I won’t introduce them further. Lao Qi is Boyka, who was just transferred away in March.”
After introducing his brothers, he smiled and patted Xu Li on the shoulder. “Even if you never work a day in your life, we can support you. So don’t feel any burden; just take care of my parents and two sisters.”
Before tying up Xu Li, he had checked the kid’s background. He had been in Irkutsk for over two years with no bad records. His account received monthly living expenses in Chinese yuan, which was about the same as the basic salary of this police squad leader.
When Xu Li heard that Ivan had six brothers, he couldn’t help but feel suspicious. What the hell? Are we like the seven brothers from the gourd tale or something? Is my sister not pretty?
Seeing Xu Li looking downcast, Lao San Vasily felt a surge of anger and was about to give him a beating when they heard barking outside. Yuri went to the window and looked out. “It’s Yuliya and the others coming.”
Old Andrei nodded and hid away some local specialties. “Everyone hurry up and get ready; I’ll take Makarov for a bath.”
He then patted Xu Li on the shoulder. “Let’s go, kid; we’ll wash up and rest. Don’t take what Ivan said to heart.”
“Yeah,” Xu Li replied, but inside he was cursing up a storm. What the hell? You’re piling all your local specialties on me and telling me not to take it personally? Just wait until I escape; I’ll definitely expose you all! Just because your son is a cop or a doctor doesn’t make him special! They’ll all end up behind bars one day.
He swore under his breath as he followed Old Russian to the backyard for a bath.
