"Your heart is functioning at only twenty percent."
The doctor's words struck Lin Nuan Nuan like a heavy hammer, landing hard on her heart.
"You can either wait to die or get a transplant."
Lin Nuan Nuan stared at the shocking data on the examination report, yet a mocking smile curled at the corners of her mouth. "What a coincidence, I never had a heart to begin with."
The shrill ring of her phone pierced the air.
The name "President Huo" flashed on the screen.
Lin Nuan Nuan answered the call, but before she could speak, the cold voice of the man on the other end cut through. "You must attend tonight's banquet."
"I'm in the hospital..."
"The hospital?" Huo Jing Shen scoffed. "Are you acting again? Lin Nuan Nuan, do you think you are someone special? You're just my purchased fiancée."
"Since you've taken the money, you should fulfill your duties."
Lin Nuan Nuan clenched the examination report in her hand, tears silently streaming down her face. "Alright, I understand."
After hanging up, she gazed out at the overcast sky.
Three months.
Very well.
Enough time for her to watch Huo Jing Shen and Su Jin get engaged, enough time for her to carry all this pain to her grave.
"Miss Lin, are you really not considering the surgery?" The doctor continued to persuade her.
Lin Nuan Nuan shook her head. "No need."
She folded the examination report and placed it in her bag before standing up to leave.
At the end of the hospital corridor, a tall figure was walking toward her.
Lin Nuan Nuan's pupils constricted, and she instinctively wanted to hide, but it was already too late.
"Warm Nuan?" Huo Jing Shen frowned, "Are you really at the hospital?"
He hurried over to Lin Nuan Nuan, his gaze sweeping across her pale face. "What happened?"
Lin Nuan Nuan took a step back, forcing a smile. "It's nothing, just a routine check-up."
Huo Jing Shen narrowed his eyes and reached for her bag.
Lin Nuan Nuan clutched it tightly, her voice trembling slightly. "President Huo, we only have a transactional relationship; there's no need for you to concern yourself with this."
"A transactional relationship?" Huo Jing Shen scoffed, gripping her wrist firmly. "So you think it's okay to meet other men?"
"What?"
"Su Jin said he saw you having dinner with the Second Young Master of the Ji Family." Anger ignited in Huo Jing Shen's eyes. "Lin Nuan Nuan, don't forget your current identity. As long as I'm not tired of you, you'd better behave yourself!"
A sharp pain shot through Lin Nuan Nuan's heart as she laughed sarcastically. "So this is why President Huo came."
"Then I can tell you now that Ji Mingyu and I are just ordinary friends. What about you…"
She raised her gaze to meet Huo Jing Shen's. "How is your engagement banquet with Su Jin coming along?"
Huo Jing Shen's expression changed. "You know about it?"
"Hah," Lin Nuan Nuan pulled her hand away from him. "I would find out sooner or later."
"Since you know, that's good." Huo Jing Shen released her hand and adjusted his suit sleeve. "Tonight's dinner is the announcement of my engagement with Su Jin."
"As my current fiancée, you must attend."
Lin Nuan Nuan's heart twisted painfully, and she leaned against the wall to keep from collapsing.
She forced herself to ask, "Why?"
"Why?" Huo Jing Shen sneered. "Wasn't it you who agreed that as long as I paid, you'd cooperate in this act?"
"Now that the act is over, it's time for you to exit."
Lin Nuan Nuan closed her eyes. "So, you want me to attend the engagement banquet so I can witness you both…"
"That's right." Huo Jing Shen interrupted her, "Let everyone know that you, Lin Nuan Nuan, are just a substitute I bought with money."
"And Su Jin is the woman I truly desire."
The pain in her heart intensified, yet Lin Nuan Nuan smiled.
She opened her eyes and looked directly at Huo Jing Shen. "Alright, I'll go."
"But President Huo, are you sure Su Jin is the one you want?"
"Are you certain she loves you and not the wealth of the Huo family?"
Huo Jing Shen's gaze suddenly turned icy. "What do you mean?"
Lin Nuan Nuan shook her head. "It means nothing. See you tonight."
With that, she turned and walked away.
Turning her back to Huo Jing Shen, tears finally fell.
Three months; her life had three months left.
Enough time to uncover all the truths.
And enough time to let go of this love that should never have been.
