"What brings you here, Master Song?"
At this, Song Lan's expression softened slightly.
"To be honest, I happened to wander here and heard from the nearby villagers that unusual beast roars have been echoing from the mountains. I fear that unknown beasts have appeared in Potter's Field and worry they might come down to cause chaos, which is why I came to investigate."
I rubbed my forehead in frustration.
As expected, it was a mess created by Xuan!
"Miss Wei, is this beast roar related to the young creature we just saw?" he asked.
"Yes, that's right. It's the same one," I admitted candidly. "However, it is merely the soul essence of the Guardian of the Mountain Stone Beast and not a malevolent creature. So please, Daoist, do not worry too much."
"From its appearance, it indeed does not seem like a vicious beast, but..." He looked puzzled. "As far as I know, the Guardian of the Mountain Stone Beast in this area should have been nearly destroyed during the recent encirclement in Potter's Field."
"Oh, I restored it. After all, the resentment in this area is thickly accumulated, and relying solely on my strength to purify it is simply beyond my capability," I said nonchalantly. "Moreover, these Guardians clearly have the function of calming evil spirits and can be used to suppress the resentment in Potter's Field. Destroying them and allowing them to decay would be a waste. So I took the liberty of using them."
"Purification? Miss Wei, to cleanse this Potter's Field would still be extremely difficult even with the full power of Esotericism, let alone relying on just you alone; that is simply wishful thinking." Song Lan frowned deeply, his face showing disapproval. "By the way, why are you here all alone? Ordinary people would not deliberately approach such a place filled with dark energy."
"It's a long story. I was sent out by my master for training and was troubled about where to start. Coincidentally passing through here, I felt it suitable as a trial and decided to stay," I replied honestly.
"A trial should be approached step by step rather than recklessly," he said, his frown deepening further. "If Master knew of your reckless actions, he certainly would not approve."
"My master's guidance has always been casual; this training only instructed me to do as I please as long as I don't die," I shrugged dismissively. "As you can see, I'm still alive and well."
Song Lan fell silent for a moment, seemingly unsure how to respond.
After a while, he spoke again:
"By the way, the technique that Miss Wei just used seems to be unlike any known methods from the various schools, nor is it of the ghostly arts. I wonder which sect it originates from? And who is your master?"
Ah, he hit the nail on the head.
I hesitated for a moment before admitting, "I am a Holy Walker, and my master is named Anyeah."
"Holy Walker? Anyeah?" Song Lan furrowed his brow in confusion. "Forgive me, Mr. Song, for my ignorance; I have never heard of such names. May I ask where your sect is located?"
I, Xu Ran, lowered my gaze to hide my eyes. "…It is located in an alternate dimension fantasy realm."
"An alternate dimension fantasy realm?" Song Lan's expression turned peculiar.
"Yes. That realm is a place created by my master through her own power, and it does not exist anywhere in the world. Recently, due to my master's waning strength, she found it difficult to maintain the operation of the illusion. Thus, she decided to seal the realm and enter a period of dormancy to regain her strength, which is why I was sent out for training."
This was a narrative I had prepared earlier. Unsure of how to begin crafting my story, I decided to piece together information from my identity profile for use.
After all, a fabricated lie can be easily exposed, while revealing the whole truth would seem absurd. But at least this information came from the system's settings; it should be relatively safe, right?
I noticed Song Lan displaying a look of skepticism.
"I have never heard of such a thing…"
"Well, it's normal not to have heard of it; after all, my master is low-key and rarely interacts with others, so the existence of the illusion has never been disclosed." I replied.
"In that case, is it wise for you to reveal this information so easily to Mr. Song?" He stared at me thoughtfully, as if considering how credible my words were.
"I think it's fine. After all, my Master has already sealed the realm, making the illusion virtually non-existent. Whether others recognize my origins or not, I have no room to argue," I said, spreading my hands in resignation.
Ha, let them doubt if they want! I've made up my mind; no matter what issues arise, I'll just push everything onto my Master (the system)!
After a moment, Song Lan let out a soft sigh and looked up at the Sophora Tree.
"Earlier, when Mr. Song saw how you guided those Vengeful Spirits... that expression of kindness and compassion, I believe it is not something a scheming person could display..."
I couldn't help but twitch my face at that.
Kindness and compassion? Are you talking about me? Are you sure you didn't make a mistake? I remember feeling more like a burden had been lifted off my shoulders, which has nothing to do with kindness or compassion!
"Your actions do not convey any malicious intent. Furthermore, you have no reason to deliberately deceive Mr. Song..." He smiled in understanding and lowered his gaze to me sitting on the ground. "In this case, Mr. Song can only reflect on his own ignorance."
"...I said it’s normal not to have heard of it." After all, if I had really heard of it, that would be truly bizarre!
With that thought, I couldn't help but sigh.
"However, this statement is by no means false; thank you for your understanding, Master Song."
It seems like I've barely managed to get through this...
As we spoke, the sky gradually darkened.
After checking my Spirit Power value and confirming that it had mostly recovered, I stood up slowly and casually brushed off the dust from my clothes.
"By the way, Master Song, you should know that Potter's Field at night is quite dangerous, right?" I focused my senses on the surroundings, confirming the level of restless resentment. "Do you have the ability to protect yourself?"
Upon hearing this, Song Lan displayed an expression that was hard to describe, seemingly incredulous at my questioning of his abilities.
"That's only natural. But what about you, Miss Wei? Are you alright?"
Oh, I know you're impressive; I was just asking out of instinct. No need to look at me like that.
"Yes, don't worry, I'm fine." After all, I've managed to get through this far on my own. "Besides, I have a helper!" With that, I called out into the distance: "Xuan—"
"Gao—"
A familiar strange cry responded from afar. Before long, I saw a black creature bounding joyfully toward me, circling around my feet.
"Gao?" (I'm here! I'm here! What's up?)
...I really envy your seemingly endless energy!
"The time is about right; we should get down to business." I crouched down to pat its head and then turned to Song Lan. "Well then, Xuan and I will go patrol. Master Song, feel free to do as you wish."
He hesitated for a moment before silently nodding in acknowledgment.
I returned the gesture and whispered to Xuan at my feet, "Let's go."
