Since Shi Tian went to Suzhou, it has been a long time since any big fish over ten pounds were caught at the numerous fishing spots across the way. Every day, only small Black Sea Bream and Sea Bass were being reeled in, and even Shi Ban hadn’t seen a catch in days. Old Zhang was already itching to fish!
With his rod in hand, he stepped outside and peeked around the corner to check if Aunt Zhang was at her shop. Seeing that she wasn’t at the door, he quickly jogged a few steps, blended into the crowd of tourists, and turned to run towards the fishing spot across from the Fishing Tackle Shop.
“What kind of fish?” he asked, glancing at Shi Tian’s rod as Old Zhang handed him a cigarette.
“Not sure yet; it hasn’t come up. But it feels really strong!” Shi Tian replied, holding his rod high. “Uncle Zhang, could you send a message in the group? It’s been days since anyone caught a big fish; maybe we can lure them out.”
There were still quite a few active members in the group. Anyone who went fishing would usually post about it, whether they caught big fish or even medium-sized Bai Tiao, just to prove they weren’t part of the Air Force.
Now that he was back, he needed to stir up some excitement in the group. With such a big catch, how could he not attract ten or eight fishermen over?
He pulled out his phone and recorded a fifteen-second video to share in the group. Old Zhang quickly set up his gear and got ready to fish. Today’s fishing session wouldn’t be as long as usual, but even if it was just for the Air Force, it was still exciting.
“What’s that on your phone? A comedy skit? Does it increase your chances of catching fish? Send me a link so I can try it too!” Old Zhang glanced back at Shi Tian’s phone as he cast his rod.
That ridiculous dialogue couldn’t possibly be music; Shi Tian had better taste than that. Back when the food street opened, Shi Tian had even sung while holding a guitar—he wasn’t bad, at least not unbearable.
“It’s Didi Fishing Service; you have it on your Smart Rod Software too. You can actually make money fishing now! You should give it a try and earn some extra cash! But remember to send them back their catches after you’re done!” As he reeled in his line, he explained about Didi Fishing Service to Old Zhang, who was already seeing fish surfacing.
“Whoa! A shark! What is this thing doing here again?” As soon as it broke the surface, it struggled and started pulling on the line.
This one was bigger than the shark he caught here last year, but not by much.
“Could this be that same one from last year? Has it come back for revenge?”
Last time Shi Tian caught a shark here, Old Zhang had been present too. He had released one earlier that day, which resulted in them not catching anything for the rest of the morning—a memory that stuck with him.
It had grown quite fast; last time it was about a foot long Baby Shark, and now just half a year later, it was over two feet. He locked down the drag so there was no fear of snapping the line; if it did break, at least he wouldn’t have to help remove the hook.
Pulling hard towards the shore, Old Zhang helped set up the net. As soon as there was slack in the line, they managed to get the shark into the net. Shi Tian hurried over to assist.
He handed his rod to Old Zhang; this kind of physical work was better handled by himself. Otherwise, with Old Zhang’s age and frailty, getting too close to a shark could lead to serious trouble.
Grabbing its tail and lifting it out of the net, he gave it a slap.
“Behave yourself while I take out this hook! Remember next time—don’t bite on hooks again! Or else next time I might just let you bleed out!”
With that slap, the little shark thrashed even more wildly, swinging its head around and causing Shi Tian to fumble.
There was no reasoning with this creature! Not wanting to get into an argument with it, he quickly covered its eyes with some cloth and went for the hook!
The little shark had quite an assortment of hooks in its mouth: one small metal plate and two regular barbed hooks along with another hook without barbs that had clearly been spat out—it seemed like this little guy had been caught before!
