Early in the morning, before dawn, Old Li was dragged out of bed by his wife. "Husband, you need to go earn some money; the logistics work must be done properly," she insisted.
After driving him to the airport, Old Li glanced at Shi Chui's car parked below and snorted. "Sending me off to Jiangxi, huh? Let's see how you plan to go fishing with him now!"
Once through security, Old Li's face brightened instantly. Clutching his boarding pass, he rushed to the gate, making a quick round to find Shi Chui and Old Zhang. He embraced each of them tightly. Finally, he was free!
"Thank you both for your help! If it weren't for you, I'd still be stuck at home!" he exclaimed.
Shi Chui gave him a sympathetic glance as he led the two towards the smoking area. "Help? What help? You’re just a henpecked husband; there's a limit to spoiling your wife!"
"Old Li, has your company’s bicycle inner and outer tire production line been phased out? I can find a buyer for you," Shi Chui suggested as he lit a cigarette.
"Myanmar is currently developing its tire industry vigorously. Shi Ye is quite interested in getting involved," he continued. "Starting with bicycle and motorcycle tires, then we could set up a tractor tire production line. These low-end products can be sold domestically in Myanmar while exporting the rest to Southeast Asia and Africa; that volume should be easy to manage."
"If things go well, we could even bring over some high-end equipment to produce car tires. Importing additives from home and using Myanmar's rubber to manufacture tires for export could be quite profitable."
"Inner and outer tire production line? Sure! If the price is right, we’ll sell it. We’re planning to upgrade anyway and want a new production line." Hearing that Shi Chui was interested in their bicycle tire production line made Old Li perk up immediately.
That production line had been shut down for over a year; bicycles were now moving towards mid- to high-end models, with most being tubeless tires. As for electric cars and motorcycles, they were even more focused on tubeless technology.
With overcapacity and shifting supply-demand dynamics leading to price wars in low-end production, there was no profit left.
"What do you mean by 'right price'? It's just a pile of scrap metal! If you can get someone to test it and make it usable, I’ll find someone to haul it away for three times the scrap price; otherwise, let it rust at your company."
These processes were nearly obsolete; not many wanted them anymore. For export, most people simply didn't have the capability.
"You want scrap prices for an entire production line? I don’t want unusable equipment either. You need to get everything tested first; once it's shipped over and assembled, it should run smoothly," he replied.
"You’re just a scavenger! Don’t think our production line is useless; even though it's stopped, we maintain it well enough that we can start it up anytime." Old Li shot back at Shi Chui.
"I don’t care if you maintain it or not; if it’s operational when I check it, that’s my standard. If it doesn’t run, I won’t take it even if it's free."
After saying this, Shi Chui chuckled. "When is your tractor tire production line stopping? That’s going obsolete soon too. While you can still get a decent price for it, you should pack it up and sell it! Otherwise, in two years it'll be worth scrap metal too!"
"Not selling! Don’t even think about it!" Old Li shot him an annoyed glance before extinguishing his cigarette and heading out to arrange matters regarding the bicycle tire production line.
With capitalists now having employees, Shi Tian felt liberated. Although they hadn’t seen any profits yet, they no longer had to worry about incoming revenue.
Sitting at the door of their home with fishing rods in hand, they were ready to catch dinner.
"Tian Ge," one of them said, "once this month’s earnings come in, let’s buy a boat! A black awning boat! With a wooden oar like those used for shaking!"
The black awning boat is not a specialty of Taihu; there aren't any of those in Taihu now. There are plenty of large cruise boats, and even some wooden sailboats that are over ten meters long.
It would be nice to buy one and keep it at the entrance. On rainy days, I could row it out onto the lake and enjoy the misty rain of Jiangnan.
