Shui Bi Zhang and Wang Gou were still putting on a show for their campsite, while Da Gui Wang had already made some progress on his end.
To catch Dace, Da Gui Wang specifically chose a heavy-duty rod, a large Water Drop Reel. Even with a Huchen weighing over sixty pounds, he felt no fear; his only drawback was that he had somewhat weak arms! Thus, selecting this Lei Qiang Rod was also part of his preparation for deep-sea fishing.
He already owned a Boat Rod, and adding a Lei Qiang Rod was sufficient for someone experienced in deep-sea fishing. Once his skills improved, he could always invest in a specialized Iron Plate Rod later!
With a cast of the rod, he felt a solid tug. The Lei's high stiffness meant that a gentle flick was all it took to hook the fish securely.
“How big is it?” asked Tan eagerly as Da Gui Wang reeled in the line.
“Not too big, maybe three or four pounds. It might not even be a Huchen!” He was using a floating Mino. As he spoke, Da Gui Wang quickly reeled in the line.
Until the fish broke the surface, no one could definitively say what it was. This wasn’t like using a Hand Rod or Taiwanese Fishing techniques, where one could judge by the float and bait.
In southern China, there were too many species that could be lured. Common catches included Qiao Zui, the widely distributed Black Fish, as well as Largemouth Bass and Giant Catfish found in the waters of Jiangnan—all potential targets for lures.
Lure enthusiasts typically avoided nets and preferred using Control Fish Tools instead. Each preference had its reasons; those who shunned nets had their own justifications.
Jigs came equipped with hooks, most of which were triple hooks without any leader line involved. When using a net to scoop up fish, if the hook snagged on the net’s edge, the fish would get caught there.
If at that moment a fish hooked on the net decided to perform its signature Carp leap, it could easily flip out of the net. At that point, the net would even have an automatic unhooking feature, leaving you helplessly watching as the big fish splashed back into the water, waving goodbye!
He retrieved his hook and took out his Control Fish Tool before stepping to the riverbank. A three or four-pound fish still required some assistance; otherwise, it would be quite troublesome for Da Gui Wang to handle it alone—he couldn't just let it fly up!
After pulling a few more times, when the fish reached the shore, he didn’t even need to use his Control Fish Tool; he expertly controlled it with precision!
This teamwork was professional; they didn’t need to speak as they worked together seamlessly!
“Junyu! Wow! You caught a Junyu on your first cast!” Tan exclaimed excitedly as he lifted the fish onto the shore.
Junyu were still quite abundant in the waters of the Yangtze River and even in Jiangxi; several reservoirs from the South-to-North Water Diversion project contained plenty of them.
However, in Ganjiang, Junyu were relatively rare; otherwise, wild Junyu wouldn’t cost one or two hundred yuan per pound.
Unfortunately, this catch couldn’t be shared. While leisure fishing was allowed here, using lures was prohibited because they classified lures under illegal fishing methods.
This classification made sense; allowing leisure fishing was meant to help feed the fish population. If you showed up with iron plates and plastic lures to cheat them out of their food supply, who else would they target?
While few people monitored lure fishing along the riverbanks, flaunting your catch online would certainly attract attention! Even if you released the fish afterward, you’d still face consequences without question!
“Let’s get a Fish Bucket to store this! We’ll take it over to Xiao Feng. After that, let’s cast a few more lines and see how things are going; we should also prepare for dinner!” Da Gui Wang said as he took the fish from Tan’s hands after checking that no one was watching.
