The first stop is Haikou? There's really not much to do there! It's better to go somewhere closer; how about we run ten kilometers to Yalong Bay first and take a look around?
After fishing at Yalong Bay until four in the afternoon, I stepped on the gas and headed for Haikou. Who knows, I might even make it across the sea to Xu Wen tonight!
I set my alarm and wandered around, asking about fishing spots. The seven-kilometer stretch of white sand beach isn't just for show, but I couldn't find a single rock where I could fish. It wasn't until I reached Haitang Bay that I finally saw someone fishing.
I parked and got out, slinging my gear over my shoulder. When I reached the shore, I noticed a few bros were playing with lures!
Since they were using lures, I couldn't be left out. I moved my gear back to the car and grabbed a lure rod to head back to the beach!
With the water drop reel set up and the lure tied on, I swung my arm and cast it out—whoosh! The line snapped!
The spinning reel was definitely smoother than what Shi Tian was using, but that didn't matter much with the water drop reel; if the line was going to snap, it would snap. These two types of reels operate on entirely different principles!
Oh! Is that someone selling Chao Fen?
With a flick of his rod, one of the bros caught a Hai Li right in front of Shi Tian, flaunting his skills while the line in his spool remained intact.
After being ruthlessly mocked by another bro nearby, Shi Tian was left speechless. He was frustrated too; he just couldn't figure out how to use the water drop reel!
"Is that someone selling Iron Plate Squid?" I casually mentioned as I quickly untangled my line. I realized I'd need to practice with the water drop reel more often; otherwise, I'd be subjected to endless ridicule!
After giving Shi Tian a glance, I reeled in my line when the line-snapper approached me and said, "You can catch squid with an iron plate, but unfortunately it's still daytime. You'll have to wait until nightfall!"
Watching Shi Tian struggle with his line, the line-snapper hurried over to help him out. "That's not how you untangle a line! You're a newbie, right? Let me help you; it's been a while since I've untangled one!"
The line-snapper was quite pretentious—hadn't untangled a line in ages? Is there anyone who uses a water drop reel without snapping lines? Why did Shi Tian find that so hard to believe? Even experienced anglers occasionally snap lines!
As I watched the line-snapper deftly untangle the mess from Shi Tian's spool in just a few moves, I felt envious! If only I could master that technique, I'd never have to worry about snapping lines again!
Once the line was untangled, Shi Tian still hadn't gotten his rod back; the line-snapper was still adjusting his wheel.
To successfully use a water drop reel, the first thing you need to learn isn't how to untangle lines—it's how to adjust the wheel.
Besides the handle, there are three knobs on the water drop reel. The drag adjustment is similar to that on an electric reel; this guy plays it like a pro since he always catches big fish!
According to the wheel's manual, setting the mechanical knob so that it feels slightly loose is ideal. If this knob is tightened too much, it slows down line release and casts short. If it's loosened too much, while releasing line isn't an issue, it leads to snapping lines—no matter how skilled you are!
Of course, for experts using water drop reels, they have their own methods of adjustment that aren't suitable for beginners.
Once the mechanical knob is set correctly, it's time to adjust the magnetic knob. This knob has markings; the higher the setting, the greater resistance when turning the wheel and thus shorter casts.
If set too low, while there's less resistance when reeling in line from the spool, Chao Fen will end up getting snagged! Of course, some experts can directly set both knobs to zero and rely solely on their finger control for managing line release from the spool!
With everything adjusted on my wheel, I casually cast out my rod to test its effectiveness!
"Nice rod you have there! Where did you buy it? How much was it?" As he watched the jig disappear into the vast ocean, Blast Line Brother casually asked out of curiosity.
This cast had gone at least sixty or seventy meters, which was quite an achievement for him. Fishing by the sea doesn't always require long casts to catch fish. During high tide, fish tend to forage near the shore, so twenty meters is usually sufficient. However, when it's cold or hot, fish will move to deeper waters, necessitating longer casts.
The weather in Sanya is hot; it's a bit better in the mornings and evenings, but once the sun rises, you really have to cast far out. "This rod and reel cost me twelve hundred. I bought it at the southernmost fishing tackle shop in Anyou Town. It's my first time fishing, so I don't even know if I overpaid!" Shi Tian scratched his head innocently as he handed a cigarette to Blast Line Brother.
After a few casts and reeling in the line, Blast Line Brother smiled slightly and said, "Is selling Iron Plate Squid that profitable now? You bought such a good rod on your first try? How about this: I'll give you thirteen hundred for it; just sell me the rod!"
Blast Line Brother didn’t believe that the rod was actually bought for twelve hundred; just the reel alone was worth more than that—was he joking? Hearing this, Shi Tian felt helpless.
This was the downside of not having a reputation; if he had one, he could easily sell just that reel for three thousand without any issues! But without fame, even selling it for a few hundred in Anyou Town was hard to come by. "Well, if I sell it to you, how will I fish? Driving here costs quite a bit in fuel! Considering you taught me how to adjust the reel, I'll add a hundred—fourteen hundred for you!"
That's how selling works; once Shi Tian agreed verbally, Blast Line Brother wouldn’t dare push for more! As Shi Tian set his price, Blast Line Brother smiled slightly but didn’t rush to negotiate. He raised his hand and cast again, slowly reeling it in to confirm whether this rod and reel were truly worth that price.
It's only about twenty kilometers from Anyou to here—two hundred bucks for fuel? That’s quite expensive! I could just drive over and buy one myself; why bother buying from you? To get more practice with this reel, Blast Line Brother started haggling with Shi Tian.
After several casts, Blast Line Brother confirmed that both the rod and reel were in good condition and relatively new; the line on the spool was brand new as well. "Alright then, I'll throw in a box of jigs! I've realized I won't be able to figure out this Water Drop Reel; I might as well stick with a regular spinning reel!"
Relying solely on fishing for a living seems a bit unreliable; it's better to rely on selling fishing gear instead! If this rod sells, then at least my fuel costs will be covered!
