The Scallion Ginger Fishy’s voice crackled through the radio before the fish had even surfaced.
“Mini Air Force, this is Cong Jiang Xing. Please respond!” Out at sea, the Scallion Ginger Fishy’s call was standard protocol; after all, there were more ships than just Shi Tian that could receive signals!
Upon hearing the call, Shi Tian placed his rod on the rod holder and turned to head into the cabin.
“Mini Air Force received! Where are you fishing? How’s the catch?” The radio couldn’t be used for long conversations; if two people occupied the channel chatting, it would be troublesome for others needing to communicate in emergencies. It was best to keep things brief!
On this channel, every hour and six minutes past the hour required radio silence, specifically to receive distress signals from ships at sea. This practice had been passed down since the Titanic tragedy.
During this time frame, all vessels needed to have someone monitoring the radio to ensure they could receive calls for help from nearby ships in distress and respond promptly.
At sea, rescuing people was free of charge; however, recovering cargo or vessels came with a price.
They had caught a few fish, including a sixty-seven-pound tuna. Zhang Hong had managed to reel in three decent-sized ones! With one sixty-seven-pound tuna as a base, it seemed their haul for the day would be quite good!
“Come over! We’ll have an Oil Well together soon!” Shi Tian quickly replied to Scallion Ginger Fishy before hanging up the radio.
The fish were biting well here, so he wanted them to come over and fish for a while! However, he couldn’t say that over the radio; if he shouted it out loud, it wouldn’t be much different from posting about catching big fish at a reservoir on social media. Within half an hour, there would be boats everywhere!
Turning back to the fishing spot, he found his rod already in Sun Lang’s hands, who had hooked a fish. It wasn’t large, but Sun Lang showed no signs of relinquishing it. If he didn’t speak up tonight, Shi Tian figured he might never get his rod back!
“Boss, you use the Iron Plate Rod first; this rod has a fish on it. I’ll help you reel it in!” Seeing Shi Tian eyeing the rod in Sun Lang’s hands, Sun Lang said nonchalantly while turning his attention back to the water and whistling.
Well now! This guy was certainly not shy!
Shi Tian turned to grab the Iron Plate Rod, releasing some line to check if the bait fish Yan Zai that Sun Lang had used still had any energy left.
Surprisingly enough, it still had plenty of fight left in it. As soon as he let out some line and gave it a couple of tugs, the fish darted off twenty meters! This was quite entertaining!
Without further ado, he decided to play with the fish for a bit longer. Since this Yan Zai was so lively, he’d let it run its course!
After giving it two minutes of rest time, once that time was up, he tightened the line and pulled twice more; this time the fish darted out another twelve to twenty meters!
Shi Tian was having fun with his catch when Sun Lang got into the action too. He had just hooked another Yan Zai and switched out for a larger hook on his Electric Reel. The newly caught Yan Zai was now bait!
This Yan Zai was even bigger than the last one and stronger too; when thrown back into the sea, its power surpassed that of Shi Tian’s current catch!
One after another, Shi Tian and Sun Lang engaged in a swimming contest with their Yan Zais while Wang Ergou rolled his eyes at them. “Why aren’t you two fishing properly? What are you messing around for?”
While Shi Tian’s rod still had a fish swimming freely on it, Sun Lang’s luck took a turn! As soon as he released some line, his rod nearly slipped from his grasp; whatever was on his hook must have already made its way into some big fish's belly!
With a flick of his rod and a push of the electric button, Sun Lang finally experienced what it felt like to battle with something substantial!
"Should we lock the drag?" The sudden happiness left Sun Lang a bit flustered as he steadied the rod.
The fish was sizable; if the drag was locked, the line would snap. He tightened it a couple of notches. Over a thousand meters of line was enough for it to go wild! After giving Sun Lang a quick reminder, Shi Tianyi moved away from him and hurriedly started reeling in.
He was right next to Sun Lang, and with such a big fish on his rod, one wrong move could lead to tangling lines, significantly increasing the chances of losing it! Sun Lang had just hooked a decent fish; if it got away due to a tangle, he would be restless even in his sleep, fearing that Sun Lang might come looking for trouble in his dreams!
Seeing that Sun Lang had hooked a big one, Wang Ergou quietly began to reel in as well. He wasn't worried about tangling lines with Sun Lang; however, since Sun Lang had switched to bigger bait and hooks and caught a big fish, he figured he should make a change too!
This technique couldn't be learned by Da Gui Pai; they still had bets riding on this! A single cigarette didn't cost much, but face was important!
Just as Shi Tianyi brought his rod close to the side of the boat, a Sea Wolf swam up to join the fray. For fish that had taken the bait, passing by a Sea Wolf meant they were fair game for robbery!
Sea Wolves had their own code; there were standards for tolls. Generally, they would leave just the body of the fish behind, while the tastiest part—the head—was rarely spared.
Of course, there were exceptions. The Sea Wolf's tolls were based on size and determined by their own dimensions. If the hooked fish was too small or if they were too large, they would take everything. After all, if the fish was small, the head wouldn't be worth eating either; they would gladly assist you in cleaning up!
