"Where are you, you little rascal? I heard you’re back in the country. Why don’t you come and see your old man?" Before he could even speak, the voice on the other end of the phone was already questioning him.
Hearing this, Air Force felt speechless. He wanted to go back and see the old man, but did he dare? Every time he returned, he became the old man's personal chauffeur, not only taking him fishing but also having to bring along his fishing buddies. The logistics consumed his entire day, leaving him no time to even cast a line.
And that wasn’t all. Whenever he tried to leave Kyoto, as long as he didn’t go abroad, the old man would cling to him, following him wherever he went. It was nearly impossible to escape unless he had a legitimate reason; otherwise, the old man would pester him every day to take him fishing.
"Grandpa, I just got back! I have some matters to attend to here, but I’ll come to Kyoto to see you in a few days!" Air Force could only force a smile and say.
He was puzzled; he had blocked the old man's WeChat ID, so logically speaking, the old man shouldn’t have seen his posts. How did he know he was back in the country?
"You’re in Sanya? Perfect! There’s been a cold front in Kyoto these past few days, and the temperature has dropped significantly. I’ll stay with you for a few days; pick me up at the airport tomorrow!" Without waiting for Air Force's reply, the old man hung up.
After hanging up, the old man looked up at his daughter and said, "Buy me a ticket for tomorrow’s flight to Sanya. Take me to the airport in the morning; I’m going to stay with Air Force for a few days!"
As for the old man visiting Air Force, both his daughter and son—who rarely saw him—were more than eager to help.
The old man spent his days wandering around Kyoto fishing. Some nearby spots were manageable; they could take the subway or a bus and get there easily with a few friends. However, for some remote fishing spots, it meant that several elderly men would have to rely on their children for transportation and logistics.
Once the call ended, Air Force felt utterly resigned.
The old man was coming over for a few days; tomorrow he would pick him up from the airport. For these few days, he decided not to go fishing. If the old man discovered Xinyue Lake, it would be hard to send him away afterward!
Having an extra old man fishing at Xinyue Lake wasn’t too much of an issue, but there were many of his fishing buddies! Once he caught a big fish, he would surely show off everywhere. Those buddies were all wealthy and had plenty of free time; if they got hooked on it for a few months, that lake would be ruined!
Just right now they were about to start construction at Xinyue Lake; it was best not to fish there for now. They could always return after the project was completed—waiting just a month wouldn’t be too late. After thinking it over, Shi Ye spoke up.
Air Force's grandfather was well-known; his reputation wasn’t just due to his status but also because of his obsession with fishing.
At over seventy years old and braving temperatures below thirty degrees Celsius, he could drag Air Force out for ice fishing in Northeast China and stay there for several days. Such a hardcore fisherman was someone they could only admire.
With these three not going fishing, Shi Tian felt somewhat upset. If they weren’t going out, then he wouldn’t be able to borrow their fishing gear! Without access to their gear, he couldn’t fish either—this was tough for someone who had just entered this hobby.
Early the next morning, after a night of tormenting thoughts, Shi Tian woke up before dawn and drove out.
Relying on borrowed gear wasn’t going to work; since he couldn’t borrow any more, he decided to buy his own set. After all, it wasn’t too expensive—a line and a rod along with some lead sinkers, fish hooks, and floats would only cost one or two hundred yuan at most.
Yesterday’s big catch had been with a seven-meter rod, but seeing its price made Shi Tian give up; that same brand’s seven-meter rod cost significantly more than the three-point-six-meter one!
The three-point-six-meter rod would suffice; larger fish weren’t necessarily better tasting anyway. Yesterday Lu Ya’s three-point-six-meter rod managed to haul in three or four-pound fish just fine—perfect for one serving! Shi Tian comforted himself with this thought and proceeded to pay for a three-point-six-meter rod.
With the rod acquired, he opted for pre-made line setups—two sets of varying thicknesses—and including the rod itself came in under ten yuan! The price was so cheap that Shi Tian was pleasantly surprised!
Now equipped with gear and realizing it was still early in the day after returning home, Shi Tian bought a few packs of instant noodles and planned to find a small river nearby to practice casting—he needed to break in his new rod!
In Sanya, the rainfall is abundant, and there are plenty of small streams, especially on the way back to the villa. This area remains undeveloped, and not many people come here to fish. However, these small streams cannot be found on any map; one can only explore the forest based on the surrounding terrain.
Finding such streams was not a challenge for Shi Tian. On his way back, he recalled encountering over a dozen of these small streams. Eventually, he found one with a slightly larger flow and decided to follow it downstream. Once the terrain leveled out, he hoped to find a pond.
After spending most of the day searching, Shi Tian finally discovered a pond about thirty to forty meters in size, though it was surrounded by over ten meters of water grass. He broke off a branch, dug up some earthworms, and began his fishing journey.
He tested the depth and adjusted the float before hooking on a worm. Within moments, a finger-sized Xiao Mai Sui was flung onto the bank by Shi Tian's cast. This fish held great significance for him; it was the first fish he had caught using his own gear and skills. To celebrate this achievement, Shi Tian generously opened a pack of instant noodles and began to eat them straight from the package.
The pond may not have been large, but it was teeming with fish. After half a day's effort, Shi Tian had filled a small pit he had dug for keeping his catch. Looking at the three remaining earthworms, he decided that once he finished fishing with them, he would head back. With so many Xiao Yu caught, frying them would be enough to fill four plates.
Wiping away sweat, he cast his line into the water again. The fish float remained still for quite some time. Just as Shi Tian was about to reel in his line to check if the worm had been taken, suddenly the float dipped sharply. He quickly lifted the rod.
A big fish! Excitedly shouting, Shi Tian began to exert force. Based on his experience from yesterday, this fish was definitely substantial—at least four pounds!
Shi Tian pulled hard, and so did the fish!
Snap!
As he relaxed his grip slightly, tears of frustration filled Shi Tian's eyes when he realized that his rod had broken in less than a day of use. He could only watch helplessly as two thin sections of the rod slipped away towards deeper waters, getting further and further from him.
"You wait right there! Tomorrow I'll buy a stronger rod and settle this score!" After cursing under his breath in frustration, Shi Tian resigned himself to packing his Xiao Yu into a convenient bag provided by the fishing gear store while also collecting the empty noodle packaging and drink bottle before heading back along the same path.
Ten dollars later for a convenient bag for his Xiao Yu—Shi Tian couldn't tell if it was cheap or expensive; he just felt quite disheartened.
Upon returning to the villa and just before entering, he spotted Shi Ye and Lu Ya coming down from the mountain. They must have gone up to supervise construction work.
"Where have you been? We haven't seen you all day," Shi Ye asked as he blocked Shi Tian's path with his car.
