On a breezy morning, Lin Xiao Yu and Lu Zean set off joyfully on their journey back to Beijing, filled with dreams for the future. One of their plans was to purchase a home of their own.
In the 1990s, Beijing was in the midst of rapid development and transformation, with real estate prices reflecting this unique trend. At that time, ordinary residential properties in the city center were priced around two to three thousand yuan per square meter, while slightly more remote areas could see prices around one thousand yuan per square meter. For a Siheyuan, prices varied greatly depending on location, size, and condition; some could be as low as several hundred thousand yuan, while others could reach over a million.
They searched high and low until they finally found an old-style residence with a small courtyard tucked away in a corner of the city. The towering Old Huai Tree in the yard seemed to tell stories of the past, providing a refreshing shade during the summer. Although the exterior of the house showed signs of wear, it exuded a unique charm that had been cultivated over years. The well-lit living room, cozy bedroom, and a small alcove that could be transformed into a study captivated them completely.
However, the thirty thousand yuan price tag set by the seller exceeded their budget. Lu Zean was the first to negotiate: "This house is indeed nice, but the price puts us in a difficult position. You see, it’s quite old, and there will be considerable costs for future repairs." The seller immediately responded: "This house has clear advantages due to its location near the city center, and the Old Huai Tree in the yard is truly one of a kind. Thirty thousand is already quite reasonable."
Lin Xiao Yu then added, "We are just ordinary office workers with limited incomes. The money we’ve saved is not much; we can only offer twenty-five thousand at most. We hope you can understand." The seller frowned slightly and pondered for a moment before saying, "That’s not possible; this house is definitely worth that price. It’s worth at least twenty-eight thousand—no lower."
After discussing privately, Lu Zean proposed: "How about twenty-six thousand? If you agree, we can finalize everything today and sign the contract without you having to worry about finding other buyers." The seller weighed his options and eventually nodded: "Alright, since you both truly love this house, twenty-six thousand it is."
After signing the purchase agreement, they carefully planned the layout of their new home. Lu Zean worked at a research institute and desired a quiet space where he could immerse himself in knowledge for academic research and writing. The well-lit and relatively quiet alcove was transformed into a study, featuring custom-made wooden bookshelves that extended from floor to ceiling with various compartments for storing Lu Zean's professional books, research materials, Academic Journals, and classic Academic Works.
The desk was made of high-quality solid wood and placed directly under the window; one side featured small drawers for storing tools and frequently used materials while leaving enough space on the other side for his computer and desk lamp so that Lu Zean could fully enjoy natural light while studying. A comfortable ergonomic office chair with adjustable height and backrest provided excellent support for his long hours of research. Next to the desk was a small Filing Cabinet used for organizing important documents and research manuscripts.
