In the academically vibrant and culturally rich environment of Soochow University, Xiao Ting had always stood out among the faculty and staff due to her hard work and exceptional performance. The university had granted her an enviable opportunity to queue for housing. When a teacher from Soochow University excitedly shared this news with Xiao Ting, she simply responded calmly, showing little excitement or special reaction, as if this was merely a minor ripple in her life.
Coincidentally, an academic exchange conference was being held in the university's conference hall, attracting elite scholars from various fields. Professor Zhuang, a well-known expert in the industry, was also invited to attend the conference, and the teacher from Soochow University happened to be among the attendees. During a break at the conference, they met and engaged in a lively conversation. The teacher from Soochow University suddenly remembered something and eagerly asked Professor Zhuang, "Professor Zhuang, when is your daughter Xiao Ting going to queue for housing? And when is her partner coming to Suzhou?"
The teacher thought to himself that with Xiao Ting being so outstanding, this housing arrangement was indeed great news, and Professor Zhuang must be looking forward to his daughter's new life. However, he failed to notice the unusual expression on Professor Zhuang's face.
Professor Zhuang's smile instantly froze; it felt as if he had been struck by a bolt of lightning. He wondered anxiously: Partner? Married? How did I not know about this? What is going on? His eyes filled with shock and confusion as he raised his voice, "What! When did she get married?" The sudden news left Professor Zhuang at a loss; countless questions flashed through his mind, but he didn't know where to start. He could only stand there in stunned silence, overwhelmed by shock and filled with worry about the unknown situation, along with confusion and a hint of disappointment over his daughter's secrecy.
Fuming, Professor Zhuang rushed home and immediately confronted Huang Ling, saying loudly, "Did you know? Someone told me at school today that Xiao Ting is queuing for housing and asked when her partner is coming to Suzhou! When were we supposed to find out she got married?" Upon hearing this, Huang Ling's eyes widened in surprise and anger as she thought: How could she do this? She didn’t even tell us such an important thing.
Not long after, Xiao Ting returned home from work. With a dark expression on his face, Professor Zhuang stood in the middle of the living room and shouted at Xiao Ting: "So you finally decided to come back! Tell me, when did you get married? How could you hide such a big thing from us? Do you even consider us your parents anymore? After all the hard work we put into raising you, is this how you repay us? From today on, I will pretend I don’t have a daughter!" Professor Zhuang’s face turned red with anger, veins bulging on his neck. Huang Ling sat silently beside him, coldly staring at Xiao Ting as if she were a stranger who had done something wrong.
Xiao Ting was taken aback by this sudden outburst; it felt like a blow to her heart. Tears streamed down her face as she ran to her room and immediately called Lin Dongzhe. With a choked voice on the phone, she said: "Lin Dongzhe, please help me! My parents found out I got married and they are really angry. My dad said he doesn’t recognize me anymore." Hearing this on the other end of the line made Lin Dongzhe anxious like an ant on a hot pan; he thought: What should I do? I need to be there for Xiao Ting. But then he remembered he was currently in an important internship at Procter & Gamble; leaving might affect his future. He kept comforting Xiao Ting over the phone: "Baby, don’t cry yet. Let me think of a solution."
Lin Dongzhe quickly sought advice from Lin Wufeng. After pondering for a moment with furrowed brows, Lin Wufeng decisively told Lin Dongzhe: "You can’t leave your internship right now. Here’s what we’ll do: I’ll have Song Ying go to Suzhou immediately to check on things and support Xiao Ting. We can’t let her face this alone."
Initially hesitant about going, Song Ying grumbled under her breath about how Xiao Ting shouldn’t have acted so irresponsibly. However, after a moment of reflection, she gradually smiled and said to herself: "But then again, Xiao Ting is really quite impressive in many ways; having her as our daughter-in-law would indeed be a blessing for our family."
