At the Shanghai Theatre Academy, Suzhou was a remarkable dancer, blessed with an innate talent for dance that seemed as if a little sprite had attached itself to her. When she danced, whether spinning or leaping, her movements were precise and energetic, exuding a powerful charisma. Her foundational skills were solid, allowing her to master any dance style with ease, and she was well-known for her prowess at school.
One day, while Suzhou was tidying up in the classroom, her teacher approached her with a beaming smile and a glint of excitement in his eyes. He hurried over and said, "Lin Xiao Yu, the school has decided to recommend you to Beijing to participate in a prestigious Dance Competition! This competition has high standards and is quite challenging; it’s well-known in the dance community and presents a rare opportunity!" Upon hearing this, Suzhou's heart skipped a beat. Her eyes sparkled like stars as images of her predecessors shining on stage and captivating audiences filled her mind. Overwhelmed with excitement, her voice trembled slightly as she replied, "Teacher, I absolutely must seize this incredible opportunity!" Her gaze was filled with determination and anticipation for the competition.
However, the competition schedule was tight; she would need to spend two months in Beijing. The first month would be dedicated to creating an original dance piece, meticulously crafting every note and arranging the rhythm to develop her unique style—much like a composer refining their work. The second month would involve intense training, practicing in front of the mirror day after day to perfect every movement and detail, all in hopes of dazzling everyone on stage. The competition format was akin to popular talent shows—each round interconnected and thrilling, with plenty of unknowns lurking ahead.
Just as her excitement peaked, Suzhou suddenly remembered that she would have to be apart from her boyfriend, Lu Zean, for two months. It felt like a bucket of cold water had been poured over her; a wave of sadness washed over her.
When Lu Zean heard the news, he was laughing heartily with friends but suddenly froze. The smile vanished from his face, replaced by a pang of sadness that felt like being scratched by a kitten. His mind flooded with memories of them holding hands while strolling through the streets or cuddling on park benches sharing amusing stories. After a long silence, he finally looked up and forced a smile. Taking Suzhou's hand, he said, "Babe, this is your golden opportunity! Don’t worry about me; focus on doing your best and aim for great results. I’ll be waiting for your triumphant return!"
Friends and family gathered around upon hearing the news. A friend patted Suzhou on the shoulder and said, "Sister, go for it! We’re here cheering you on; you’ve got this!" Family members also surrounded her, offering encouragement with eyes full of care and expectation, all hoping she would shine brightly on the Beijing stage and return home victorious.
In the days leading up to their separation, both Lu Zean and Suzhou felt as if they were looking into a mirror—one preparing to fight on the Beijing stage while the other faced an internship decision. Whenever they had free time, they clung to each other tightly, wanting to make the most of their remaining moments together.
While wandering around campus one day near the experimental building, Lu Zean remarked to Suzhou: "Babe, I spend my days tinkering with reagents and test tubes in that building; it feels like solving puzzles. I’m determined to find meaning in this field so that I can have some real skills to support our future." Suzhou teased him playfully: "You’re so absorbed in those experiments that you might forget about me!" Lu Zean quickly wrapped his arms around her and chuckled: "How could I? You’re always on my mind."
When they reached a bench by the lake, the atmosphere turned serious. Lu Zean rubbed his hands together and said: "Lin Xiao Yu, my internship has been arranged. I initially wanted to intern in Guangdong while you were in Beijing; being alone in Shanghai wouldn’t be ideal. Plus, there are plenty of internship opportunities in Guangdong since many companies are based there."
Suzhou’s eyelashes fluttered slightly as she responded softly: "Yeah, that makes sense."
Lu Zean continued: "Coincidentally, our school has an exchange program in England designed specifically for my major; it lasts exactly two months—perfectly aligning with your competition schedule. Babe, do you know how advanced research is over there? In top universities’ labs, everything is cutting-edge; professors are industry leaders. I could learn so many cutting-edge theories and new technologies that would greatly benefit our future together. Even though we’ll be far apart, we can both push ourselves forward and become even better."
Suzhou's eyes lit up as she grasped Lu Zean's arm excitedly: "Oh wow! This opportunity is amazing; you absolutely must take it! But remember that England’s weather can be unpredictable like a child’s mood; their food is different too. Take care of yourself—don’t get cold or hungry! Make sure you bring everything you need when you go out."
Lu Zean patted his chest confidently: "Babe, don’t worry at all; I’ll take good care of myself! But you—going to Beijing for that competition means your training will be intense. You need to take care of yourself too! You have such natural talent for dancing with solid foundational skills; those movements will come easily to you. Just don’t push yourself too hard—be careful not to get injured! If you feel tired or worn out, take breaks instead of pushing through it. Make sure you eat regularly; being well-fed will give you energy for practice so you can perform at your best on stage. I believe you can achieve great results and return triumphantly! I’ll work hard in England too; when we reunite, we’ll both be people who make each other proud."
