However, Zhuang Tunan's father, Mr. Zhuang, was not pleased. His face tightened into a frown as he expressed his discontent. In his view, since Zhuang Tunan was pursuing a graduate degree, he should focus solely on studying and immerse himself in academic research instead of meddling in business ventures; it seemed like a distraction from his studies. Zhuang Tunan hurriedly explained that this would help him gain social experience and practical skills while earning some pocket money without hindering his studies. Despite his lengthy explanation, Mr. Zhuang still felt uneasy but eventually sighed and agreed.
With a mix of anticipation and nervousness, the four of them set off for Fujian. After a long journey, they arrived at Lin Dongzhe's uncle's place. As soon as they got out of the car, a wave of heat hit them. The streets were lined with old-style arcade buildings with gray walls that bore the marks of time. Between the buildings were walkways that provided shade from the sun and shelter from rain—very practical indeed. The streets were bustling with vendors selling all sorts of delicacies like meat dumplings and fish balls from Fujian, filling the air with enticing aromas that made their mouths water. The surrounding people chattered in Minnan dialect; although they couldn’t understand it, the lively atmosphere felt refreshing.
After walking along the stone road for a while, they reached their uncle's house. Their cousin greeted them warmly and boasted that he would definitely help them find cheap suppliers to get their business started.
Just after arriving, their aunt pulled Lin Dongzhe aside with a serious expression and whispered, "Lin Dongzhe, when you're out there, don't be too trusting. Don't believe everything those three say; even though they're friends, it's wise to keep your guard up."
Upon hearing this, Lin Dongzhe quickly waved his hand dismissively and smiled, "Auntie, don’t worry! Zhuang Tunan is my girlfriend’s brother, and Lu Zean is my sister Lin Xiaoyu’s boyfriend—they're family and trustworthy!"
His aunt frowned deeply and lowered her voice to emphasize her seriousness. "Lin Dongzhe, I know you're an honest kid who values relationships, but the outside world is complicated; you can't judge people by appearances alone. Although your companions seem familiar now and look trustworthy, there are too many variables in business."
She gently patted Lin Dongzhe's shoulder as if trying to instill this warning deep within him. "When looking for suppliers, don’t just take their word for it about where to find cheap goods; you need to keep your eyes open—check the quality yourself and inquire about market conditions. Don’t be careless with your money; if you end up with subpar goods or overpriced items at the start of your venture, it could ruin everything. And when it comes to negotiating prices, don’t let anyone sway you easily; be firm on what you can afford."
She paused for a moment before fixing her gaze on Lin Dongzhe again and continued earnestly: "When you're out selling, keep an eye on your accounts—every transaction must be clear as day. If things get muddled up later on, you won't know whether you've made a profit or not. When dealing with wholesalers or customers, don’t speak too freely; leave some room for negotiation—don’t lay all your cards on the table at once. Even though Zhuang Tunan is your girlfriend’s brother and Lu Zean is your sister’s boyfriend, remember that when it comes to money matters—feelings are feelings but business is business—never let pride lead you into making a big loss.
