At the same moment, at home, Zhuang Xiao Ting was curled up on the sofa, clutching her stomach. Her small face was pale with pain, cold sweat pouring down from her forehead and the tip of her nose. Her lips were devoid of color as she bit down hard, trying to suppress the waves of excruciating pain that surged through her, letting out faint sounds of distress. Lin Dongzhe and Suzhou, who had been discussing their homework nearby, immediately rushed over upon hearing her sounds, their faces turning pale with shock. 0

Suzhou was frantic, her eyes reddening instantly as she turned and dashed like the wind toward Father’s room. She fumbled through the cabinet in a panic, searching for a box to hold money. Coins scattered all over the floor, but she didn’t have time to pick them up; she hurriedly grabbed a handful and stuffed it into her pocket, muttering to herself, “Quick, we need to get Xiao Ting to the hospital!” 0

Without a second thought, Lin Dongzhe crouched down and carefully lifted Zhuang Xiao Ting onto his back. As he stood up, he softly reassured her, “Xiao Ting, don’t be afraid. We’ll be at the hospital soon; just hang in there!” He then dashed out the door, his steps urgent and powerful. Beads of sweat rolled down his cheeks and dripped onto the ground, kicking up tiny clouds of dust. 0

The news reached Huang Ling like a gust of wind while she was mechanically operating machinery. A coworker shouted at her, “Huang Ling! Your child is in trouble; they took her to the hospital! Hurry!” Huang Ling felt as if struck by lightning; the tool in her hand clattered to the ground as she stood frozen for a moment. Then she bolted out of the workshop without even changing out of her work clothes, her hair flying wildly in the wind. Her eyes were filled with terror and anxiety as she stumbled toward the hospital. 0

In the emergency room of the hospital, the sharp smell of disinfectant filled every inch of air. Zhuang Xiao Ting lay weakly on the bed while doctors carefully examined her. The IV drip slowly delivered fluids into her body. Huang Ling rushed in breathlessly and immediately spotted her daughter. Tears welled up in her eyes as she hurried to the bedside and grasped Zhuang Xiao Ting’s hand, her voice trembling with emotion: “Sweetheart, Mommy is here; don’t be afraid.” She gently stroked Zhuang Xiao Ting’s forehead in an attempt to convey warmth and comfort, unable to take her eyes off her daughter, filled with worry and heartache. She wished nothing more than for Xiao Ting to recover quickly; it felt as if all suffering could be borne by herself alone. 0

Meanwhile, Zhuang Tunan and Teacher Zhuang were filled with joy as they walked home with light steps as if walking on clouds, chatting and laughing along the way. Zhuang Tunan tightly clutched his hard-earned acceptance letter from Tongji University’s architecture program. The paper was slightly crumpled from his nervous excitement as he repeatedly rubbed it between his fingers. His reddened eyes sparkled with exhilaration as he murmured, “I can’t believe that the admissions office finally gave me this opportunity; it wasn’t easy at all.” Teacher Zhuang patted his shoulder with a proud smile: “Child, this is what you deserve for your hard work. Make sure to study well in university.” 0

However, as they stepped through the front door, instead of a lively celebration scene they had imagined, they were met with an eerie silence and emptiness that quickly spread an inexplicable sense of unease through their hearts. A neighbor hurriedly approached them with news: “Oh thank goodness you’re here! Xiao Ting suddenly had severe stomach pain; Lin Dongzhe and Suzhou took her to the hospital! Huang Ling went along too!” Zhuang Tunan’s face changed dramatically; he nearly dropped his acceptance letter and shouted anxiously: “What happened? Is it serious?” Without waiting for more information, both rushed toward the hospital. 0

In the hospital corridor, the sharp scent of disinfectant lingered in the air under harsh white lights that felt cold and unwelcoming. Zhuang Tunan and Teacher Zhuang found their way to Zhuang Xiao Ting’s ward and pushed open the door. There lay Zhuang Xiao Ting weakly on the bed, her face pale as paper with a damp cloth resting on her forehead while IV fluids dripped slowly into her arm. Huang Ling sat beside her on the bed; her already haggard appearance now showed even more signs of fatigue. Her bloodshot eyes were filled with concern as she watched over her daughter, occasionally lifting a hand to tuck in the blanket. 0

“Mom! How is Xiao Ting?” Zhuang Tunan asked urgently as he stepped closer to the bed. Huang Ling looked up just as dizziness hit her; she swayed slightly before Teacher Zhuang quickly supported her: “Huang Ling! What’s wrong?” A nearby doctor immediately came over to check on her and frowned: “The patient is overly fatigued and has been under intense mental stress; she can’t handle it right now and needs to be hospitalized for observation and treatment.” 0

Zhuang Tunan and Teacher Zhuang were momentarily stunned; their earlier joy was overshadowed by worry. But Zhuang Tunan forced himself to stay strong as he pulled out his acceptance letter from his backpack and handed it to Huang Ling with a choked voice: “Mom, look! I got accepted into Tongji University’s architecture program! You and Xiao Ting need to get better quickly so we can celebrate together.” Huang Ling trembled as she took the letter from him; looking at those golden embossed letters brought tears to her eyes as a smile broke through: “That’s wonderful! Son, I knew you could do it.” 0

Hearing this, Zhuang Xiao Ting struggled to open her eyes weakly: “Brother, congratulations! I knew you would get in.” The atmosphere in the ward gradually shifted from tense anxiety to shared joy; everyone temporarily forgot about their pain and exhaustion as they immersed themselves in this hard-won good news. It felt like a warm current dispelled the gloom hanging over them all; they hoped for swift recoveries so they could embrace new beginnings together. 0

In the days that followed, Zhuang Tunan busied himself shuttling between school and hospital while preparing for his studies and taking care of his sister and mother with utmost care. Laughter often echoed through the ward amidst their struggles intertwined with fortune; their family grew closer together while looking forward to brighter days ahead. 0
