The Energy Vortex in the square dissipated with a puff, resembling a drunken man swaying unsteadily before finally vanishing, leaving behind a chaotic mess.
Lin Yuan exaggeratedly wiped nonexistent sweat from his forehead and let out a dramatic sigh of relief. "Wow, finally done! This thing is more exhausting than climbing twenty floors delivering takeout back in the day!"
Su Jiu'er shot him a sidelong glance and retorted without mercy, "Cut it out! If I hadn't shut down the Spiritual Energy Generator in time, the whole Nanjing City would have been blown to pieces, and then you wouldn't have anywhere to deliver takeout!"
Lin Yuan chuckled and immediately switched to a flattering expression, sidling up to Su Jiu'er. "But you were here! My Jiu'er, you're my guardian angel. With you around, what do I have to fear?"
Su Jiu'er ignored his slick words and walked straight toward the ominous-looking high-rise next to the square. To anyone unaware, it would seem she was heading into a haunted house.
Seeing this, Lin Yuan hurriedly followed her, eager not to be left behind.
The two arrived in the basement of the high-rise. The scene was nothing short of a disaster zone! Instruments and wires were strewn everywhere, as if hundreds of huskies had gone on a rampage. The air was thick with a burnt smell, likely due to the earlier Energy Vortex.
Lin Yuan sniffed and said with feigned seriousness, "Looks like Nan Gong Xuan has slipped away."
Su Jiu'er crouched down, her slender fingers lightly brushing over the chaotic traces on the ground. Her brow furrowed slightly. "No, he should still be here. Look, there are fresh footprints, and he 'accidentally' left behind some documents. Tsk tsk, such cunning; it's a shame he doesn't pursue acting."
As she spoke, Su Jiu'er picked up a document from the pile of clutter and handed it to Lin Yuan.
Lin Yuan took the document and pretended to put on nonexistent reading glasses, flipping through it with great seriousness. In the next moment, he froze, eyes wide open as if he had seen a ghost. The document prominently displayed the words "Penglai Project" in flamboyant script that exuded an air of trickery.
"Penglai Project? What is this? Is Nan Gong Xuan trying to build a fairyland on the sea and crown himself as the Jade Emperor?" Lin Yuan asked in bewilderment.
Su Jiu'er rolled her eyes and explained, "From what this document says, this plan seems related to a technology that can significantly enhance Spiritual Energy Concentration. It also mentions a secret base hidden underground in the city; it looks like Nan Gong Xuan is planning something big."
"A secret base? No way! Is someone really playing Dungeon and Warriors in real life these days?" Lin Yuan exclaimed dramatically before his expression turned serious. "Wait, an underground secret base... could it be..."
"Yes, just as you think." Su Jiu'er nodded, her tone becoming grave. "This secret base is likely where you faced that accident three years ago—the place where your dreams shattered."
Lin Yuan's fists clenched tightly, knuckles turning white as anger burned in his eyes. The accident three years ago had robbed him of his dream of becoming a martial arts champion and had drastically altered the course of his life. Now he finally had the chance to uncover the truth and seek justice for his past self!
"Let's go! To that secret base! I want to see what that Nan Gong Xuan kid is up to!" Lin Yuan said firmly, exuding an unstoppable aura.
"Wait, Lin Yuan," Su Jiu'er called out to him, pointing to a name on the document. "This report mentions another name—Lu Min."
Lu Min? Lin Yuan's heart sank. He was all too familiar with that name. She had once been his mentor and the person he respected most. However, she later betrayed him and became his enemy. The entangled emotions and grudges between them were more dramatic than a soap opera.
"Lu Min... How could she be involved in this plan?" Lin Yuan pondered, feeling as if his mind was turning to mush.
"I don't know either. But I think she must know something," Su Jiu'er said thoughtfully. "We need to find her and get some answers."
The two left the basement and headed toward the secret base, the atmosphere heavy like the calm before a storm.
Little did they know, danger was quietly closing in.
Just as they were nearing the secret base, a group of members from the Qi Gong Association, dressed in black uniforms and wearing sunglasses—clearly not up to any good—suddenly emerged from the shadows, surrounding them.
"Well, well, if it isn't Lin Yuan and Su Jiu'er! What a coincidence!" sneered one of the leaders, brandishing a glinting weapon that made it clear he was no friend.
"Hmph, looking for death?" Lin Yuan scoffed, a glimmer of killing intent flashing in his eyes. He activated his Gazing Ability, quickly analyzing the enemies' positions and strengths while silently calculating his strategy.
"Jiu'er, cover me!" Lin Yuan shouted, then shot toward the enemies like an arrow released from a bow, moving so fast it was dizzying.
Su Jiu'er wasted no time joining the fight; her movements were light and agile, like a butterfly dancing through the air as she weaved between enemies.
An intense battle erupted against the backdrop of the city night, sparks flying and shouts echoing through the streets.
Lin Yuan utilized his unique Scientific Cultivation method, perfectly combining modern technology with cultivation techniques to toy with his foes. He used a nearby fire hydrant as a weapon, spraying high-pressure water that sent enemies tumbling; he employed roadside billboards as shields to block incoming attacks; he even turned a trash can into a trap, ensnaring an enemy inside before dousing them with chili water swiped from a street vendor. The sensation was unimaginable.
Lin Yuan's fighting style was filled with creativity and humor, leaving Su Jiu'er utterly astonished, hardly believing her eyes.
"Lin Yuan, you... you really are playing by your own rules!" Su Jiu'er exclaimed as she skillfully dodged the enemy's attacks, unable to hold back her commentary.
"Hehe, all's fair in war! Besides, dealing with these guys requires some unconventional methods!" Lin Yuan replied, pulling a slingshot from his pocket and aiming it at an enemy's backside. With a "biu," he hit his target squarely!
After the battle concluded, the two continued their journey to the secret base. Though their clothes were somewhat tattered, their spirits remained high.
Unbeknownst to them, everything was being watched by Lu Min.
Lu Min sat in the monitoring room, observing Lin Yuan and Su Jiu'er on the screen. A cold smile crept across her lips, her eyes glinting with a dangerous light.
"Lin Yuan, Su Jiu'er, do you really think this will stop me? How naive!" Lu Min muttered to herself. "I'll be waiting for you at the secret base; we have some scores to settle!"
She picked up a photograph and placed it on the screen. The image showed a man trapped in a cage, his face pale and his eyes hollow. This man was none other than Lin Yuan's best friend—Zhou Haoran!
A cruel glint flashed in Lu Min's eyes. "Lin Yuan, the person you care about most is now in my hands. If you want to save him, come to the secret base!"
With that, Lu Min pressed a button, and the image on the screen vanished.
Meanwhile, Lin Yuan and Su Jiu'er remained blissfully unaware of everything unfolding around them as they made their way toward the secret base, stepping deeper into Lu Min's trap.
