"Miss, you can't say that. You shouldn't accuse others of marrying into a wealthy family just for the sake of it. Xiyun and Jiyue must be truly in love," a middle-aged woman among the bride's relatives interjected.
Zhao Xinrong glanced at the woman with disdain and replied, "And who are you to Li Xiyun? Just by looking at you, it's clear you're not someone of status. Even though you're wearing an evening gown, you look utterly out of place. This is not a venue for people like you. "How can you speak so harshly? Is this how a young lady from a wealthy family behaves?" The middle-aged woman frowned and scolded her.
Feeling overwhelmed by the situation, the woman vented her frustration.
"Who are you to criticize me? My upbringing is beyond your comprehension," Zhao Xinrong retorted, her mood already sour. She had thought that Li Xiyun's impoverished relatives would be easy to bully, but she never expected them to fight back.
"What a shrew!" the middle-aged woman exclaimed in dissatisfaction.
"How dare you insult me?" Zhao Xinrong shouted in anger.
Seeing her fury, the middle-aged woman felt a bit intimidated and fell silent.
"Not only should she be scolded, but she should also be slapped," Jiang Chen suddenly spoke up from the side.
Zhao Xinrong turned pale with rage at the young man's words.
"Oh? You dare to hit me? I’ll give you the courage, but you still won’t dare," Zhao Xinrong stepped forward, leaning provocatively toward Jiang Chen.
"Hitting you? Why would I need to lift a finger?" Jiang Chen replied with a smile. Ding Yan, thinking Jiang Chen was asking her to take action, was about to jump in but was halted by his gaze.
"What do you mean by that?" Zhao Xinrong glared at Jiang Chen, sensing something different about him, though she couldn't pinpoint what it was. The beautiful woman beside Jiang Chen exuded an extraordinary presence that seemed to carry an air of danger, making Zhao Xinrong hesitate to act recklessly.
Jiang Chen didn't respond; instead, he turned his attention to the entrance as if waiting for someone.
After a while, two figures appeared at the door.
It was Lin Shuang and Lin Rumei! The Lin family held significant status on Hong Kong Island, and Lin Rumei was one of the Top Ten Socialites there, naturally invited to this event.
Seeing Lin Rumei arrive, Zhao Xinrong couldn't help but smirk. "What are you staring at? Lin Rumei is my friend; she hates it when men look at her like that. Be careful she doesn't gouge your eyes out."
"I think she's too afraid to do that," Jiang Chen chuckled lightly.
"Oh really? You think she's afraid? You’re just a local; you probably don’t even know her status. She’s the young lady of our Kong Island Qinghe Society. Who do you think you are to have thoughts about her? You're just a frog dreaming of eating swan meat," Zhao Xinrong scoffed.
"Cough cough, young man, you're also from the mainland. I suggest you let it go and not argue with Miss Zhao. She has a point; our statuses are indeed worlds apart," the bride's father stepped forward to mediate.
"Yes, young man, watch your words. This isn’t the mainland; be careful not to stir up trouble and ruin our celebration," the bride's mother added. She was someone who bullied the weak and feared the strong, believing that people from Hong Kong Island were inherently superior. Thus, she silently endured Zhao Xinrong's humiliation but felt dissatisfied with Jiang Chen’s attempt to defend them, fearing it would bring trouble upon herself.
"I'm just trying to help you out; this isn't being reckless," Jiang Chen said calmly as he glanced at the bride's mother.
