"Hua Yu Yan, have we ever met? Or do we know each other? Something happened recently, and I might have forgotten."
As soon as I finished speaking, Hu Yao took a stance, ready to carve out a path for us to escape and bring back help. Both Hu Yao and Ouyang Zhirou, along with Lin Mu Xi, were sweating for me, unsure if my words would provoke her.
We all held our breath, eyes fixed on Hua Yu Yan's expression. The moment she showed any sign of hostility, we would act immediately and fight our way out! Waiting passively was not an option; taking a risk might just give us a glimmer of hope.
To our surprise, Hua Yu Yan's expression remained largely unchanged; instead, her gaze softened with affection as she looked into my eyes. "Brother Zhao Lun, it's me, Meng Lan. Hua Yu Yan is my real name!"
Hearing her words and seeing her sincere expression left me stunned. It felt as if I had been bound by a massive stone, rendering me unable to move or even blink or breathe.
The other three watched my reaction and shared a thought: Zhao Lun really knows this crazy woman!
As it turned out, she was right; we had to trace back to ten years ago. The sky was bluer then than it is now, the countryside was livelier than the city, and people were not so entangled in schemes and rivalries.
At that time, I was young, and Meng Lan was too. She was short and chubby while I was thin and dark-skinned. The difference between us now and then was so vast that we might not even recognize each other if we met again. I had spent two years living in the countryside with my grandparents during my childhood.
One day ten years ago, my grandparents suddenly told me that I would have a sister coming to live with us for a while. Since there were few children my age in the village, I often played with puppies and kittens or even fought them for food. I was thrilled by the news.
The next day, the girl named Meng Lan arrived at my grandparents' house. The person who brought her over was a man named Hua Baiwei; he didn’t share the surname Meng. As a child, I never thought much about it; I assumed he was just her uncle or something.
Little did I know that Meng Lan wasn’t actually named Meng Lan but Hua Yu Yan! Hua Baiwei was her real relative!
When Meng Lan first arrived at my grandparents' home, she was very uncomfortable and cried all day long—crying when eating, crying when sleeping—no matter how much I tried to make her laugh with silly antics, she never smiled.
After a week of this, she finally smiled at me for the first time when Ouyang Zhirou saw that photo of me on the floor fighting with a puppy over food. Seeing her smile brought me more joy than my own laughter ever could; it filled me with a sense of accomplishment and pride.
Children easily bond through play; from that moment on, she became like a shadow following me everywhere, calling me "Brother Zhao Lun." Wherever I went, she followed.
My grandparents looked at how harmoniously Meng Lan and I got along and sighed in nostalgia—childhood truly is wonderful.
I took her to catch frogs in the rice fields, climbed trees to find bird nests with her, and even snuck watermelons from other people's fields together. She loved singing and often imitated my grandmother's tunes or sang songs for me. My grandmother praised her too, saying that Meng Lan would definitely become a shining star one day. The song she knew best was "Rewind."
It was a deeply emotional song that took on a different feeling when sung in her tender voice.
Over time, the two of us became inseparable partners and good friends.
