The next day, I woke up early and began to pack my clothes and some things I needed to take with me. I was running back and forth on the entire second floor, making quite a racket.
This noise woke up Old Zhao, who angrily pushed open the door, holding a clothes hanger like a weapon. "What kind of mischief are you up to so early in the morning? Haven't I taught you a lesson in a while?"
I dragged my suitcase across the floor, creating a loud scraping sound.
Old Zhao chased me around the second floor with the hanger, and eventually, I found myself at his mercy. After taking a couple of hits from him, I decided it was best to behave and made sure to place something under my belongings to avoid making noise.
Half an hour later, my grandparents returned from their morning walk and were puzzled by the various packages at the door. As they opened it, they bumped right into me.
"My good grandson, what are you up to?"
"Good morning, Grandpa and Grandma! With school starting soon, I thought I’d move these things to the apartment that Old Zhao gave me. It’ll make getting to school much easier."
"Let me help you move," Grandpa said. "We’re heading back to the village this afternoon."
Hearing this made me put down what I was carrying. To be honest, it had only been about two months since my grandparents came to visit, and I had spent a month and a half in the hospital.
"Don’t you want to stay longer?"
Grandma smiled and replied, "We came here just to see you. Since school is starting soon, we have to head back. But remember, as long as you want us to come over, we will."
Perhaps for my grandparents, life in the village was much more enjoyable than here; at least there they were surrounded by familiar faces. I didn’t press them further.
Soon enough, Grandpa joined me in packing. With his support, I couldn’t help but remember those two hits from Old Zhao earlier and deliberately made even more noise than before.
Before long, Old Zhao burst out of his room with a loud bang. He still had that same hanger in hand. "You little brat! Do you really want to get yourself killed today?"
At that moment, I was downstairs organizing my things and didn’t notice Old Zhao approaching with ill intent.
As he cursed loudly, he collided with Grandpa at the last step of the staircase. Without thinking, he swung the hanger at him while still shouting threats.
"Zhao Changsheng! You dare hit me? Just try it!"
Hearing this made Old Zhao drop the hanger with a clatter as his expression shifted from anger to one of nervousness. "Oh, it’s you! Where’s that little brat Zhao Lun?"
Grandpa didn’t care about any of that; he had witnessed Old Zhao's earlier actions firsthand! He picked up the fallen hanger and struck Old Zhao with it hard enough that it produced a loud crack in the air—clearly showing he was using all his strength.
In the end, Old Zhao retreated into his bedroom and refused to come out. My grandparents watched as people I had called from West City District loaded my packed belongings into the car. Grandma then turned to me and said, "Xiao Lun, being on your own isn’t like being around your parents; you need to be more careful and watch out for everything."
"I understand, Grandma."
Watching as I prepared to live alone, Grandpa simply said one thing: "Make sure to visit us when you can."
That single statement carried an endless longing—just like when Old Zhao had taken me away from them before. They were now saying similar words again; but as I grew older, their backs seemed to bend more with time.
"I will, Grandpa."
"Be careful on the road."
This time Er Dan personally drove to pick me up. There was also a young assistant with him who even brought some tools along—just in case anything unexpected happened like last time!
If last time those people from the Wokou Nation deliberately spared my life, the next time might not be so fortunate, and I can't guarantee that I will be this lucky again.
As for that Er Dan, I was just moving houses; there was no need to drive a truck and bring so many brothers along.
Xiao Zhao, this is the boss's message to Brother Xia, who personally told us to make sure we protect you well and avoid a situation like last time.
Er Dan, looking tense, drove the car while constantly observing the surroundings, ready to react at any moment.
I didn't say anything further about it.
