Actually, I knew what Wang Ju'en was saying. They definitely wouldn't let this go after failing this time. Even last night's dream felt so real!
"Thank you for your concern, I understand," I replied.
Upon hearing my response, Wang Ju'en stood up and left. Now, only the three of us remained in the hospital room.
Ouyang Zhirou suddenly walked over and pinched my ear. "Zhao Lun, tell me, who is the graceful lady that the gentleman seeks?"
"Ouch, that hurts! Let go!" I exclaimed.
Lin Mu Xi blinked as if she suddenly realized something and came over to pinch my other ear. "Who is the graceful lady?"
With both ears being pinched, it was painful, but at that moment, it felt particularly warm.
By noon, the two of them were still at the hospital with me, making my recovery feel less dull. To pass the time, they even had someone bring up a deck of cards, claiming they wanted to play a game of Landlord to settle things. Since we were short one person, they pulled me into the game.
The stakes they set were that whoever had fewer paper slips on their face could kiss me.
"Hey, hey! Did you even ask for my opinion on this reward and punishment?" I protested.
After an hour of playing, Lin Mu Xi ended up with the fewest slips on her face. This made Ouyang Zhirou furious as she punched my thigh. "Are you doing this on purpose? Why does she always win when she's the landlord?"
I rubbed my thigh and teased her. "Come on! You’ve blocked her cards several times with bombs; how can you blame me for that?"
"Hehe, I won! Ouyang Zhirou, move aside; a bet is a bet!"
Ouyang Zhirou immediately lay down on my lap, refusing to budge. "What do you mean by a bet? Do we even have one?"
Lin Mu Xi wasn’t angry; instead, she slowly took out her phone and played a recording. It was their oath from before the game started—whoever didn’t honor it would never be allowed in my house!
I was taken aback; I hadn’t expected Lin Mu Xi to anticipate that if Ouyang Zhirou lost, she would definitely deny it. So she recorded it in advance.
"How did you get a recording?" Ouyang Zhirou exclaimed as Lin Mu Xi pushed her off the bed and sat beside me.
"Oh dear, I don’t know. Maybe it’s just fate; perhaps heaven knew someone would go back on their word and gave me this recording."
At this point, Ouyang Zhirou couldn’t deny that those weren’t her words anymore. If she had known she would lose at Landlord, she wouldn’t have made kissing Zhao Lun the wager—now she had lost both Zhao Lun and her pride.
"No kissing!" After saying this, Ouyang Zhirou turned to look out the window, stomping her feet in frustration. "Damn it! If I had known I was so bad at this game, I wouldn’t have played! That fox got to kiss Zhao Lun; it’s like he was licked by a dog!" She consoled herself with this thought.
Lin Mu Xi gazed at me with affection, inching closer without caring about Ouyang Zhirou's presence—or perhaps she was doing it deliberately in front of her.
Then came the question: would I refuse? Refuse? Not a chance! Whether it was Lin Mu Xi or Ouyang Zhirou kissing me, did they really think I was some paragon of virtue? I never claimed to be one.
"Can you hurry up? If you’re not going to kiss him, then let me!" Ouyang Zhirou’s anxious voice rang out. How could she not be anxious when the person she liked was about to be kissed by someone else?
Lin Mu Xi ignored everything and planted a kiss on my cheek, the sound echoing throughout the hospital room.
"My Good Grandson, Grandpa and Grandma are here to bring you lunch!"
As soon as they stepped through the door, Grandpa and Grandma were greeted by the sight of Lin Mu Xi still in the act of kissing my cheek, leaving them momentarily at a loss for words.
Both Lin Mu Xi and I turned to look at the doorway upon hearing their voices, our eyes meeting in an awkward silence. Not only did Lin Mu Xi blush, but I felt my face heat up as well.
"Ahem, you two continue, we didn't see anything," Grandma said as she pulled Grandpa away, turning to stand outside the door.
Ahh! Fox spirit! Zhao Lun!!
Inside the room, the argument between Ouyang Zhirou and Lin Mu Xi began to rise.
It didn’t last long—only about ten seconds—mainly because they were both afraid of being kicked out by the doctors and not being allowed to see me.
After a brief scuffle, when the room fell silent again, the two elders re-entered. "Xiao Lun, quickly try this! Grandma picked this Old Hen from the market early this morning and has been stewing it all morning with lots of nourishing ingredients. It’s good for your health!"
I thanked Grandma as I took the lunchbox. When I opened it, a wave of steam rushed out, filling the room with the aroma of the Old Hen soup.
Delicious! Just as I was about to dig in, I noticed Ouyang Zhirou and Lin Mu Xi looking at me eagerly. Right, they hadn’t eaten either! "Grandma, do you have any extra bowls and chopsticks? Zhi Rou and Mu Xi haven’t eaten yet."
"Don’t worry! Your mother told us all about it; how could we let our two grandsons' friends go hungry?"
Although Grandma hesitated for a moment, I understood what she meant. I simply smiled without saying anything; it was all understood without words.
