An hour had passed, and the lights were still on when Zhao Changsheng and his group finally arrived. Upon seeing them, Ouyang Zhirou and Lin Mu Xi burst into tears, releasing the panic and unease that had built up within them after the ordeal.
Ouyang Xiong and the others immediately rushed to comfort them. In contrast, Li Hong sat silently on a bench in the hospital, seemingly calm before the storm. Zhao Changsheng intended to approach her to offer some comfort, but as he took a step forward, Li Hong instinctively recoiled, giving him no chance to get close.
Neither of his grandparents spoke up for him; after all, it was a mess of his own making, and he would have to resolve it himself. Lin Tian quietly suggested to Lin Mu Xi that she should go comfort Zhao Lun's mother, who was clearly struggling and on the verge of emotional collapse. Just moments ago, she had been shouting about wanting a divorce from her husband. Lin Mu Xi's eyes widened in shock; if Zhao Lun were to come out safely, knowing how severe things had escalated, it would likely be him who broke down.
Without hesitation, she walked over to Li Hong. Ouyang Xiong conveyed the same message to his daughter; they were now allies on the same front. If this situation led to a complete breakdown, the consequences would be dire. Moreover, he recognized Zhao Lun as part of their circle and knew they could not let this situation spiral out of control.
Both women approached and sat beside Li Hong. She showed no resistance to their presence. It was then that Hu Zhi finally spoke up, asking her son Hu Yao to recount everything that had happened in detail.
Hu Yao shared the entire story without leaving anything out. Listening intently, Zhao Changsheng seemed to realize something important and pulled Ouyang Xiong, Hu Zhi, and Wang Ju'en aside. He then turned to Wang Ju'en and asked if they had ultimately lost control.
Wang Ju'en choked back tears as she replied, "Zhao Uncle, I can't be sure if they were sent by someone else, but I can swear with my life that those people are from Wokou Nation. And I absolutely did not do this."
At heart, Wang Ju'en was just a girl three years older than Zhao Lun; enduring this situation had already pushed her beyond her limits. Compared to her peers, she had already endured far too much.
"Let it out; cry if you need to. I believe you didn't plan this," Zhao Changsheng said gently. As soon as he finished speaking, Wang Ju'en buried her face in her hands and began to cry.
Her emotions began to unravel; what fault did she have? She had merely gone out with their group for some fun and never expected this outcome. Ouyang Zhirou and Lin Mu Xi's attitudes seemed to imply that they believed she was responsible for what happened. All her feelings of injustice and anger erupted from Zhao Changsheng's words.
After a while, Wang Ju'en's emotions gradually stabilized. It was then that Zhao Changsheng spoke again, urging her to go home.
"You’ve lost your child; take some time and then return. Call your father as soon as possible; we need to speed things up."
"No! Zhao Uncle! I'm not leaving! I will call my dad! I want to stay here!"
Her legs belonged to her alone; she was resolute in her decision not to leave, no matter how anyone tried to persuade her.
Just as Zhao Changsheng turned back toward the door, it suddenly swung open, revealing a doctor who emerged with news that would determine Zhao Lun's fate. Everyone present rushed over immediately.
"Doctor! How is my son?"
The doctor glanced at Li Hong and asked, "Are you a close relative of the patient?"
"Yes! Yes! That's me!"
"Please prepare yourself; the patient's condition is very critical right now. We need you to sign the notice of critical illness."
Li Hong had hoped the doctor would bring good news; however, those words shattered her last glimmer of hope into pieces.
"Doctor! Please! You must save my son! I beg you!" This was the first time in Li Hong's life that she had pleaded for help. For years by Zhao Changsheng's side, she had been accustomed to having everything at her fingertips—now she felt utterly powerless. All of this was because the person lying inside was her son!
Ouyang Zhirou looked at Li Hong and was instantly reminded of her own experience. That day, she had pleaded with the doctor at the hospital entrance just like this. The scene felt like a reflection of her past, and she couldn't help but wonder why fate had taken away all the most important people in her life, one by one. Why?
Zhao Changsheng, who had been trying to remain calm, felt his emotions begin to spiral out of control after hearing those words. "Doctor, you must save him! If you bring him back, I will buy this hospital and give it to you. You have to save him!"
It wasn't that Zhao Changsheng wanted to come off as crass; it was just that he couldn't think of a better way to express his desperation. Money seemed to be the only solution he could offer.
"Rest assured, we will do our utmost for every patient," the doctor replied. "Please sign here quickly."
