Old Zhao understood the gist of their laughter; it was clear that my explanation didn’t hold much weight.
"You little rascal, you dare to tease your father? I’ll make sure you regret it today!"
Just as Old Zhao stood up, he was stopped by Grandpa, who told him to sit back down. "You should have listened when I told you to study more when you were younger. Now you're facing the consequences and still want to act out?"
Zhao Changsheng was at a loss for words, silently noting this down as a debt to settle later. "Just wait, kid. There will come a time when your grandpa isn’t around, and then we’ll see who can save you!"
My words pushed the atmosphere to a peak. The two girls sitting beside me were trying hard not to laugh, their faces flushed. Even Wang Ju'en was biting her lip to hold back her laughter.
Meanwhile, Hu Yao was giving me a thumbs-up in a place where others couldn’t see. I knew that my offhand remark would lead to me getting kicked by Old Zhao later. I really didn’t mean to say that; Old Zhao, please let me explain!
After a few rounds of drinks, Old Zhao began boasting with Ouyang Xiong, Lin Tian, and Hu Yao. Ouyang Zhirou and Lin Mu Xi had also had a bit too much to drink. Although they were slightly tipsy, it didn’t stop their usual friction from escalating further under the influence of alcohol. However, they were now sitting together, united against an external target—Wang Ju'en!
Despite Wang Ju'en’s earlier resistance to drinking white liquor, she surprisingly held her ground against their advances and easily managed to keep them at bay. Who would have thought her alcohol tolerance was so good?
Li Hong was chatting with my grandparents about their children’s childhoods while accompanying Lin Mu Xi, creating a warm and joyful atmosphere.
Hu Yao looked bored lounging on the sofa; it seemed he hadn’t had enough to drink yet but was probably holding back due to his father’s presence.
"Mom, can I go play with Hu Yao?"
Hu Yao jumped up from the sofa in excitement, his eyes sparkling.
I thumped my chest in solidarity with him. "Good brother!"
"Yeah, you two go ahead! Just head over to West City District," Li Hong said after glancing at the three girls drinking nearby before turning back to me.
"Alright! Thanks, Mom!" I replied as I stood up and headed toward the door. Hu Yao waved goodbye to his parents and followed me eagerly.
Just as I opened the door, three female voices called out from behind me. "Zhao Lun, where are you going?"
I froze in place, my foot hovering above the ground. How did they notice me when they were busy drinking?
"Uh, I’m going out to play with Hu Yao," I said while glancing back at them. When my eyes landed on them, I was taken aback.
Goodness! They were all flushed from drinking and still wanted to know where I was headed.
"I want to go too!" they all exclaimed simultaneously as they stood up and looked at each other. "What are you going for?"
"Mu Xi, you've already had so much to drink, just let it go," Haringer said. But Lin Mu Xi didn't dare let these two come along with me; one slip and I could easily fall into their trap—one was a voluptuous girl, and the other was a leggy beauty.
"Mom, please let me go! I want to have fun with them!"
"Haha, just let them go. Xiao Lun will be there, and besides, it's in West City District. Don't worry," Li Hong chimed in to support Lin Mu Xi. As a result, Lin Mu Xi suddenly leaped into Li Hong's arms, giggling, "Auntie, you're the best!"
"Alright, go ahead, but be careful," her mother sighed in agreement.
Seeing my mom's approval, Lin Mu Xi bounced over to me.
What is this? It was supposed to be just me going out with Hu Yao, but now everyone was tagging along. Moreover, since my mom had agreed, how could I possibly refuse?
I chuckled softly; it turned out that when people are at a loss for words, they really do laugh out loud.
Before long, Li Hong's car arrived—a spacious stretch limousine that would comfortably fit us all.
It wasn't until we got inside that I realized how wrong I had been. Ouyang Zhirou and Lin Mu Xi were definitely going to sit next to me; even though there was plenty of room on either side, they insisted on pressing close against me.
