Hope is ultimately just hope and cannot become reality.
As I tumbled down the stairs, I found Old Zhao and Ke Hong sitting on the sofa, a gift box that had been opened resting on the coffee table. They heard me coming down and turned their heads in unison to look at me, grinning mischievously.
Old Zhao stood up, holding a greeting card in his hand. With the flair of a poet reciting verses, he read aloud, "Dear classmate Zhao Lun, oh dear classmate Zhao Lun."
Ke Hong, listening beside him, couldn't help but burst into laughter. "Pfft!"
"Ahhh! Old Zhao! Stop it!" I shouted as I rushed over to snatch the greeting card from his hands.
Old Zhao, however, remained calm as I charged at him. Just as I reached out to grab the card, he stepped back and yanked me forward with surprising strength. I stumbled over the sofa and landed hard on the floor.
"You little rascal, you think you can compete with your old man? I've been in more fights than you've had meals!"
I rubbed my elbow, wincing. After all these years, Old Zhao still went all out against me!
"Since you want to embarrass me, I'll expose your secrets! Neither of us will come out unscathed."
"Mom, earlier at the banquet, Old Zhao said—"
The moment Old Zhao heard me mention the banquet, he realized what I was about to do. This little rascal was definitely going for mutual destruction, especially with that self-sabotaging tactic!
He quickly stepped forward and covered my mouth.
"Huh? What did Old Zhao say?"
Old Zhao chuckled nervously and waved his hand dismissively, avoiding eye contact with Ke Hong. "Oh, it’s nothing much. I just shared some philosophical insights with Xiao Lun."
"Is that so? Come on, Xiao Lun, you tell us," Ke Hong chimed in.
Upon hearing Old Zhao's words, Ke Hong immediately understood what was going on. If anyone knew Old Zhao better than anyone else, it was definitely Ke Hong—he could even tell what kind of trouble Old Zhao was about to stir up just by looking at his posture.
With his legs crossed and watching us intently, I knew that Old Zhao would likely have to face some consequences tonight.
Old Zhao glared at me fiercely, using his eyes to threaten me: if I dared to spill any secrets, I might end up in the hospital tonight.
"Fine! Let’s see who gets hurt worse!" I shot back defiantly at Old Zhao.
He immediately looked flustered; this brat really meant business!
"What are you two whispering about? Just spit it out!"
Old Zhao finally hesitantly released his grip on my mouth, then extended his palm and lightly tapped his fingers behind me. This was our secret signal; whenever we found ourselves in such a situation, he would use this method to bribe me into silence, offering me a sum of money as a hush fee.
Ten thousand? No, no, no. Perhaps back then I was too young to grasp the value of money, but now that I am an adult, I have many things I want to do, and ten thousand is far from enough.
So, I stretched out my palm and moved it up and down for a moment, pretending to loosen my wrist. Seeing this, Old Zhao instantly understood my meaning. This wasn’t just ten thousand; this was ten times that!
How dare this scoundrel try to extort me!
Noticing that Old Zhao didn’t react at all, I prepared myself for a showdown. I firmly stated that my mother had mentioned something at the banquet today about what Old Zhao had said to me.
Suddenly, Old Zhao stood up and slightly turned his back to block Ke Hong’s view. He clenched his teeth so tightly that it seemed they might shatter and silently mouthed two words to me before darting into the kitchen for a drink of water.
It felt incredibly satisfying to get that ten thousand without any hassle.
Ke Hong watched Old Zhao disappear into the kitchen and then turned back to me, asking what was going on.
