Without hesitation, I reached for a fire extinguisher, gripping the handle tightly, ready to take it to the front lines. However, after just two steps, I suddenly realized that this might be a bit labor-intensive. After a moment of thought, I resolutely turned back and grabbed another fire extinguisher. These extinguishers were not small; each had a capacity of about several liters, and their heavy weight made me feel somewhat strained. But the situation was urgent, leaving me no time to think—I had to grit my teeth and push through.
At first, I believed the front lines were not far away, so in my eagerness, I jogged ahead for a couple of steps. Little did I know that the path was filled with narrow and rugged trails, and the terrain was exceptionally steep. What I had estimated would take about ten minutes to reach ended up taking over twenty minutes due to the road conditions and incline. To make matters worse, I had to stop along the way to catch my breath and rest for a moment to regain some strength.
Finally reaching the fire point, I heard the crackling sounds of nearby trees being consumed by flames, sending chills down my spine. Without time to think further, I quickly grabbed one of the fire extinguishers and followed closely behind the team that was already engaged in battling the flames. After a tremendous effort, we worked together and finally managed to extinguish this fire point. However, this fight against the flames was far from easy; the consumption of fire extinguishers was astonishing. Just to put out such a small fire point required at least a dozen extinguishers, if not more! With the fire still not fully under control, we had no choice but to rush back again to transport more extinguishers for support.
Finally arriving at the rest area, just as I was about to sit down and catch my breath, my attention was suddenly drawn to an old man. His face was lined with wrinkles but radiated kindness and resilience. I approached him with a smile and we began chatting.
Through our conversation, I learned that this old man came from a nearby village and was already in his eighties. Surprisingly, he looked remarkably fit for his age. He told me that when he had nothing else to do during the day, he would go up into the mountains to chop wood.
After this mountain fire incident, despite his advanced age, he still wanted to do his part in helping with firefighting efforts. As he spoke, he turned around to reveal a large basket strapped to his back. He bent down and began loading fire extinguishers into it—one bottle, two bottles—until he had filled it with three full bottles! Knowing firsthand how heavy those extinguishers were, I hurriedly stepped forward to advise him: "Sir, you should take it easy; the mountain path is rugged and difficult to navigate, and putting out this mountain fire is not something that can be accomplished quickly. You need to save some strength for yourself."
But the old man merely smiled at me and said, "Don't worry; I'm still strong!" Then without hesitation, he hoisted the heavy basket onto his back and prepared to head up the mountain. Just as he was about to set off, I suddenly saw him reach out and grab two more fire extinguishers with his hands. At that moment, I was completely stunned! Watching his slightly hunched figure gradually fade into the distance, my nose inexplicably tingled with emotion; I felt a mix of feelings welling up inside me and found myself at a loss for words.
Thus we tirelessly transported various urgently needed supplies back and forth while doing our utmost to extinguish the flames. Before we knew it, time slipped away quietly as night fell; it was now around ten o'clock in the evening. The sky had darkened like ink.
After a period of intense activity, we began orderly gathering our team and making our way down towards Yuan He Point by the reservoir. Considering we couldn't overly occupy precious public resources, everyone agreed to return on foot.
Just as we had walked halfway along our route, a piercing roar of motorcycle engines approached from afar. Suddenly an unexpected scene unfolded: a motorcycle sped past like a wild horse but abruptly slammed on its brakes with a chilling scream—the brave rider known as the Blazing Knight had fallen by the roadside! Meanwhile, his motorcycle emitted black smoke not far away with parts scattered everywhere.
Seeing this situation unfold, we immediately turned around and rushed over to help him up. I anxiously asked him: "Brother, are you hurt?" However, what shocked me was that his first words were not about his own condition but rather an urgent plea: "Quick! Help me check if what I was carrying is damaged!" Hearing this made my mind go blank for several seconds—it was simply unbelievable that even after falling so painfully on the ground he was still concerned about those supplies!
It turned out that up on that high mountain peak, an excavator had suddenly malfunctioned due to a critical part breaking down! Meanwhile, those waiting below were anxiously anticipating its operation; time was pressing like burning flames. At this crucial moment, he stepped forward bravely to take on the task of delivering that essential part up the mountain.
Don’t underestimate that part’s size; it was exceptionally heavy as if it bore thousands of pounds. Moreover, the road leading up to the peak wasn’t smooth but rather a long and steep slope. To make it up there required immense courage and power—like a fierce beast charging forward.
However, after finally surmounting this steep incline, what awaited him next was an abrupt turn! Due to having climbed too quickly before along with the weight of the part itself and its powerful inertia, he lost balance entirely in an instant—like a cannonball shot from its barrel—he was flung off violently.
We performed some basic emergency treatment on him and urged him to rest for a while to recover some strength. But unexpectedly he resolutely shook his head and rejected our kindness. Gritting his teeth against his pain once more, he climbed back onto his battered vehicle without hesitation and sped off toward the mountaintop again determinedly intent on completing this daunting task.
That night as I sat alone quietly reflecting on everything that had happened during the day—a heaviness settled in my heart—I barely touched my dinner at all. What could be causing such poor appetite? Perhaps it was due to the sweltering heat that seemed intent on melting everything around us—a feeling of immense frustration and oppression; or perhaps some indescribable emotion deep within me had taken hold causing me to lose my appetite entirely.
Recalling today’s encounters stirred within me waves of emotion; in face of such great disaster whether elderly or young everyone stood firm without retreating—charging forward bravely together. This spirit of unity in overcoming adversity deeply moved me. They supported one another encouraging each other; their modest strengths converged into a powerful current capable of surmounting seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
It is precisely because there exists such a group of brave individuals filled with faith that we can endure through crisis after crisis with resilience. Their figures stand tall like majestic mountains holding up skies filled with hope; their actions shine bright like flashes of lightning piercing through darkness bringing light forth. And this is indeed—the power of people! An endless and indelible great force.
