The year was destined to be extraordinary. With the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the globe, people responded to government calls to reduce outdoor activities, staying home to avoid the spread of the virus. During this unique period, our rescue team experienced a significant decline in the number of missions compared to previous years.
Was it the pandemic that limited people's outings and thus reduced the occurrence of accidents? Or was it that, with ongoing development and public education efforts, the public's awareness of safety precautions had greatly improved? This question may be difficult to answer definitively; nonetheless, the fact remains that rescue missions had decreased.
In light of this situation, our entire rescue team decided, after discussion, that since there were not many urgent rescue actions to execute, we might as well use this relatively free time to organize an internal competition. Through this contest, we could identify outstanding talents within the team while also using it as a regular training method to ensure that team members' skills and physical fitness remained in good condition.
During the intense preparations for this competition, we diligently reviewed a vast array of relevant materials and conducted thorough research and analysis. We also extensively referenced military competition organization formats and process arrangements, drawing on their best practices. Additionally, we integrated specific content from various sectors within emergency rescue to ensure a comprehensive approach.
After repeated deliberation and discussion, we ultimately determined that the competition would consist of three main categories: First, physical fitness events including long-distance running, push-ups, and pull-up exercises. These not only tested participants' endurance and strength but also served as a comprehensive examination of their physical fitness. Second, professional rescue skills would include demonstrations of boat operation in water rescues, swimming ability competitions, as well as techniques for breaking through obstacles and bracing in earthquake rescue scenarios. There would also be rope work segments covering various knot techniques and ascending/descending operations. These events required participants to possess solid professional knowledge and proficient practical experience. Third, the medical rescue category mainly involved critical skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), wound dressing, and fracture stabilization. After all, timely and effective medical assistance during emergency rescues can often save lives.
According to our initial plan, the competition was supposed to include drone operation and radio communication as two additional subjects. However, due to various complex factors intertwined—especially time constraints—we had to reassess and adjust our arrangements.
After much contemplation and weighing our options, we ultimately made the difficult decision to temporarily set aside these two subjects for evaluation. Although this decision was regrettable, it was made based on practical circumstances and represented the most sensible choice.
Even without drone operation and radio communication in the current lineup, the existing competition subjects were still quite comprehensive and challenging. These subjects covered multiple important areas with practical skill applications across the board. Through such a thorough yet challenging setup, we could effectively assess each participant's true level of expertise in their respective fields and their overall adaptability when faced with sudden emergencies. It could be said that even without those two canceled subjects, this competition would still accurately identify truly capable and promising contestants.
We established a limit on participation for each subject set at a maximum number of participants. This arrangement had no additional conditional restrictions; it was entirely based on individual capabilities allowing for free expression. Anyone who had confidence in their abilities could compete without reservation.
Moreover, prior to the official competition, the team meticulously prepared and provided specialized training equipment for each subject to ensure every participant received adequate and effective training support. This equipment ranged from basic physical training gear to highly specialized technical devices catering to diverse needs across different subjects and skill levels.
It is also important to note that this event adopted a first-come-first-served registration policy; once a subject reached its participant cap, registration for that subject would close. However, if some teammates were unable to participate for various reasons, they still had opportunities to sign up for logistical support roles within this crucial sector to contribute their efforts to the team.
Additionally, it is worth mentioning that the training schedule was quite ample and reasonable. Detailed information about the event was officially released two full weeks before the competition began so that all interested team members could plan and prepare adequately in advance. This way, everyone had enough time to adjust their states, enhance their skills, and become more familiar with competition rules and processes in order to showcase their best performance during the event.
Almost every day, upon opening my phone and checking that familiar group chat, I would see messages about organized training popping up continuously. Some messages were sent early in the morning when dawn broke quietly; others came after nightfall when city noise gradually subsided. Each member of our group had their own responsibilities at work; therefore, training time could not be too lengthy.
One afternoon, sunlight filtered through thin clouds, casting a golden hue over everything below. I found myself with nothing pressing to do but felt an inexplicable sense of boredom creeping in. Suddenly struck by an idea, I thought about sneaking out for a drive to check on how everyone was doing with their training. Without further ado, I quickly started my car and sped toward the training ground.
Upon arriving at my destination, I discovered that my teammates were engaged in training for water rescue skills. They had carefully chosen an area not far from the dock as their training site. As soon as I parked my car, I noticed about ten figures gathered by the shore; it looked quite lively. Initially hesitant to interrupt them directly, I quietly crouched behind a small hill nearby to observe their training situation.
After a while, I sensed some commotion among them; bursts of laughter echoed through the air. Intrigued by this noise, I hurried over to investigate what was happening. To my surprise—what I saw took me aback! When I was still about twenty meters away from them, they spotted me immediately and quickly rushed over to pull me into their midst. Each person held skewers of delicious-smelling barbecue.
With a puzzled expression on my face, I asked what was going on. One person laughed and replied: "We thought daily training was too monotonous! So we all discussed finding some fun for ourselves; hence we decided to cook something together! This morning we went shopping at the market for fresh ingredients and set up a barbecue party in that open area behind our training zone!"
Hearing his explanation brought me unexpected joy: "Haha! What perfect timing! Now I can feast!" With that thought in mind, I wasted no time joining this barbecue crew. Upon closer inspection of their spread—wow! There were indeed plenty of ingredients: tender juicy lamb skewers, spicy chicken wings, crispy golden potato slices… Looking at this array of mouthwatering food before me made me joke: "I see you guys are always so proactive during training because you're looking forward to this delicious barbecue!" Everyone burst into laughter at my comment; the atmosphere was warm and cheerful.
Time passed slowly until we finally arrived at the eagerly anticipated competition day. This event would last two full days across three different venues designed to comprehensively assess participants' abilities and qualities.
Among them, physical fitness and medical rescue events were scheduled at a high school playground adjacent to Team Headquarters. Since the competition coincided with a weekend when students were away on break at home, this spacious playground became an ideal venue for our contest where participants could fully showcase their robust physiques and proficient medical skills.
Meanwhile, water rescue competitions were held at a riverside dock where rushing waters sparkled under sunlight adding an extra charm to this contest. Contestants needed to navigate through various complex situations within this expansive water environment demonstrating their exceptional aquatic operational capabilities.
