We drove the team vehicle, marked with bright insignia, slowly into the area designated for disinfection. This was an old neighborhood, its age evident in the weathered walls that bore the marks of time. Unlike the modern high-rises, this area consisted entirely of buildings that required climbing stairs to reach each household.
The neighborhood was not small, with over ten such buildings standing tall. Each building had about ten stories, and from a distance, they resembled a cluster of gray and brown blocks stacked together. To prevent random movement of people, barriers had been set up around each building, making the already quiet neighborhood feel even more desolate. Looking around, the empty streets showed not a single soul; not even a staff member had arrived to meet us.
Faced with this situation, we did not panic. Instead, we quickly took out our phones and called the contact person in the district. However, the message on the other end left us feeling somewhat helpless: due to other urgent tasks that needed attention in their area, they were unable to come assist us with the disinfection work. Nevertheless, they expressed confidence in our professional abilities and advised us to proceed according to plan.
Once we prepared everything, our team marched towards the entrance of the building. Just as we stepped inside, the first team member in front suddenly froze as if struck by a spell, standing still for several seconds as if his feet had rooted to the ground.
Seeing this, I felt anxious and shouted from behind, "What are you doing? Hurry up! We have to go up anyway; what’s there to be afraid of?" My voice echoed in the empty corridor, carrying an invisible urge.
Perhaps he heard my call or suddenly came to his senses; he took a deep breath and surged forward like an agile leopard, leaping up the stairs with lightning speed.
We followed behind him, burdened by heavy fog machines, climbing those long stairs step by step. At first, it felt relatively easy since we still had energy. However, as we ascended higher and higher, everyone’s steps grew heavier and breathing became labored. Especially halfway up, fatigue set in so intensely that it felt unbearable; my legs felt as if they were filled with lead, requiring all my strength just to lift them.
Even so, we did not give up. Gritting our teeth and encouraging one another, we continued to climb step by step. Finally, after an arduous effort, we completed the disinfection task for the first building.
Meanwhile, in the adjacent building where Old Wang's team was working on disinfection, they also finished their task almost simultaneously. I must say everyone’s efficiency was quite impressive.
According to the district's original plan, we only needed to disinfect this designated area. But looking at the nearby buildings closely packed together made me wonder: these adjacent structures might also pose a risk; what if something went wrong if we didn’t handle them too? With this thought in mind, I turned to Old Wang beside me who was panting heavily and tentatively suggested, "Old Wang, how about we disinfect all these nearby houses as well? What do you think?"
After hearing my suggestion, Old Wang looked around at the densely packed buildings for a moment before turning back and simply replied with one word: "Okay."
Soon after, each group divided their respective work areas and immediately got busy without further ado. At first, due to lack of experience and wearing thick protective suits while carrying heavy equipment weighing dozens of pounds was quite uncomfortable! Moreover, fearing infection risks meant that even though it was stifling hot and sweat soaked our bodies completely through our suits, we dared not take them off. Coupled with long hours of labor without timely hydration made our throats feel as if they were on fire; yet we could only endure.
When we set out for this mission initially full of vigor and confidence, by the time it neared completion we were utterly exhausted. The once lively group now appeared drained of energy like wilted eggplants. After persevering through an entire afternoon of relentless effort, we finally completed disinfection for all buildings successfully. At this point everyone was panting heavily and barely had strength left to speak as we collapsed onto the stairs in the corridor.
After a brief rest, Old Wang quickly contacted our district liaison and briefly reported on our task completion status. Then we dragged our weary bodies back towards Team Headquarters. Upon arriving at Team Headquarters, everyone wasted no time resting and hurriedly set up a tent area specifically for disinfection work. When I finally peeled off that heavy and damp protective suit, the feeling of relief was indescribable.
Time flies; years have passed since then but that unforgettable disinfection experience remains etched deeply in each of our hearts. Occasionally when we gather together again, we still fondly reminisce about those days.
Recalling our first disinfection day brings back memories of how physically drained we were yet everyone understood that every bit of effort was worth it. I remember that day well; it was a daunting task requiring thorough disinfection floor by floor throughout an entire building. With no elevators available, team members could only rely on their own legs as they painstakingly climbed each flight of stairs. Some teammates suffered muscle strains from overexertion on that first day and limped for several days afterward due to pain; yet they did not retreat or complain but rather gritted their teeth and completed subsequent tasks.
Some teammates even bought adult diapers specifically so they could work more efficiently without wasting time on frequent bathroom breaks. Looking back now brings smiles as we recall that determination and courage from those days.
Whenever we talk about those scenes again—busy figures rushing around amidst pungent disinfectant smells along with words of encouragement exchanged among teammates—it all feels vivid before us. Every detail is so clear that it evokes strong emotions within us. It was precisely through that shared struggle that deep friendships were forged along with precious memories on each other’s life journeys.
