Among the team members remaining to perform patrol duties, one individual stood out particularly. She was the teammate frequently mentioned in previous chapters, known for her participation in marathons. Despite her petite stature, she possessed a resolute and courageous spirit akin to that of a man, earning her the affectionate nickname "Tomboy" among her peers. Whether facing difficulties or challenges, she always stepped forward without hesitation, demonstrating extraordinary bravery and perseverance.
As time ticked by, the participants gradually arrived at the competition venue. Holding a walkie-talkie, I spoke with a steady and firm voice: "Team, let’s stay sharp! Today is an important race; we need to showcase our best selves!" My simple words flowed like a warm current into everyone’s hearts, bringing them encouragement and strength.
At that moment, the atmosphere was electric, akin to a bonfire blazing brightly. The competitors were eager and restless, filled with passion as they stood at the starting line, their eyes reflecting a thirst for victory and anticipation. With a sharp whistle from the referee cutting through the air like a battle horn, the race officially began!
According to our original plan, I arranged for the teammates responsible for patrolling along the route to jog at the back of the group. However, unexpectedly, once our "Tomboy" stepped onto the marathon course, she lowered her head and took large strides, darting into the crowd like a gust of wind. In an instant, she found herself in the middle of the pack. It seemed she had completely forgotten that she was merely there to accompany others; she was wholly immersed in this fierce competition.
Seeing this, I quickly called out through the walkie-talkie: "Watch your speed and maintain your pace!" Initially, upon hearing my instructions, she managed to slow down slightly. But it wasn’t long before her competitive spirit took over again, and she surged ahead like a wild horse. Faced with this scene, I shook my head helplessly and thought: "Well, if this is what she loves, let her be! Perhaps in running, she'll find her own joy and sense of achievement."
Throughout this intense race, everything progressed unusually smoothly. Whether it was the teamwork among members or our responses to various unexpected situations, we handled everything with ease. However, just as we reached the halfway point of the race, an urgent voice suddenly came through the walkie-talkie: "Someone is injured!" My heart tightened instantly as I shouted into the device: "What happened? Where are they hurt? Is it serious?"
After a brief silence, an anxious voice responded: "It’s a competitor at point number __; they’ve twisted their ankle!" Upon learning this information, I made a quick decision and organized other teammates to initiate emergency medical assistance. At that moment, I hurriedly jumped into a vehicle and sped toward the incident location.
The vehicle raced along until we finally arrived at point number __. Before it had even come to a complete stop, I eagerly pushed open the door and dashed out. At that moment, a teammate rushed toward me in haste, panting as they detailed what had happened and described the current condition of the injured party.
Based on my teammate's description and preliminary assessment at the scene, it became clear that this injured competitor could not continue participating due to their severe ankle injury. Realizing this situation brought down everyone's spirits. However, time was of the essence; we couldn’t afford any delays. So we worked together carefully to help the injured person sit down on the side to rest.
Seeing their pained and helpless expression made me approach gently to offer comfort: "Don’t worry too much; we’ll take care of your injury as quickly as possible and ensure you receive proper treatment. Although you can’t continue competing this time, there will be many opportunities ahead." Despite my words of encouragement, they remained silent, sitting there with an expression full of deep resignation and disappointment.
In the latter part of the race—perhaps due to fatigue or road conditions—there were instances of sprains occurring here and there but nothing too severe. The most memorable incident was just as we were nearing the finish line when a girl stumbled just meters away from it. Perhaps due to exhaustion or misstep, she fell hard on her right calf and knee; blood began to flow from her wounds. Our teammates were about to rush over to help her when she waved us off with determination and struggled back up to continue running forward. Since we couldn’t cross onto the racecourse to assist her directly during competition time, we stayed alongside her outside of it to cheer her on.
As she ran those final meters slower than before, all eyes were on her; even the race announcer began speaking encouraging words into his microphone: "Just a few more meters! You can do it!" Our cheers grew louder alongside hers. Just when she seemed ready to give up—only meters from crossing that finish line—she appeared to hear our relentless encouragement; gritting her teeth with resolve, she surged across it.
After crossing the finish line, she collapsed onto the ground in tears. Our teammates rushed over to comfort her and tend to her wounds. As we helped her up amidst her sobs of gratitude—just two words escaped her lips: "Thank you."
In that moment when she could not articulate her feelings verbally, her actions spoke volumes about her determination and spirit. Through sheer strength and unwavering willpower, she proved her capabilities and worth—this is what embodies great sportsmanship.
On the competitive field, every athlete faces immense challenges and pressures yet chooses to confront them bravely with sweat and effort in pursuit of their dreams. This spirit is not only reflected in victories but also in their persistence and refusal to give up.
What she demonstrated was precisely this great sportsmanship. Whether in training or competition, she gave it her all while continually pushing her limits. Every effort showcased her growth and progress. Her story inspires us all; as long as we have dreams coupled with courage and perseverance, we can overcome any obstacle and realize our aspirations.
This is what great sportsmanship is about—it is not merely a competitive spirit but also an attitude toward life itself. It teaches us that no matter what difficulties or challenges we face, we must have courage in confronting them and confidence in overcoming them. Only then can we become our best selves.
