Summer seemed to arrive particularly early this year. While the country experiences four distinct seasons—spring, summer, autumn, and winter—people in Chongqing often joke that the city only has two: summer and winter.
During this specific season, various missions came pouring in like snowflakes, overwhelming us with their sheer volume. Among them were heart-wrenching drowning recovery tasks and perilous incidents involving lost climbers during sunrise hikes. However, at this critical time, we faced a severe shortage of personnel. Those teammates with families found themselves in a dilemma, as their children were enjoying the joyful summer vacation. They struggled to balance their responsibilities at home with their duties to the team, making it difficult to find enough time to participate in missions. Meanwhile, some team members chose to escape the heat and enjoy a leisurely summer elsewhere, further exacerbating our already strained manpower situation. During those busiest days, we often completed one urgent task only to rush off to the next, with even a moment to catch our breath feeling like a rare luxury.
Historically, most drowning incidents in summer occurred due to swimming by the river. I vividly remember one particular mission that stood out because it involved consecutive incidents in the same area!
One afternoon, a teammate received an urgent call for help from a friend who reported that their relative's child had tragically drowned at a normal river channel. Upon hearing this news, we quickly responded and rushed to the scene. Unlike previous rescues, this environment was quite complex; the location was not in a familiar reservoir or at Xikou but rather within the river channel itself. The river channel was deep and had swift currents, undoubtedly adding significant difficulty to our rescue efforts.
When we arrived at the scene, we discovered another rescue team was already conducting an emergency search. To avoid confusion and redundancy in our efforts, we communicated with the neighboring team and swiftly devised an efficient rescue plan. Considering the specific conditions of the river channel, we decided to split our efforts: they would search near the point where the person fell in, while we would conduct a broader search downstream.
During the tense yet orderly search operation, every second felt exceptionally precious. We understood the urgency of time and the enormity of our task but remained steadfast in our belief that we would give our all in this race against time. Despite numerous challenges, we were convinced that as long as there was a glimmer of hope, we would never give up.
At that moment, the neighboring team was equipped with advanced technology and high-precision sonar devices. In contrast, our team appeared rather under-equipped; we could only rely on an assault boat to conduct our search. After about two hours of effort, we received a message via radio from the neighboring team instructing us to return to headquarters for a meeting as they had obtained some new leads.
Just as we stepped onto the bank and tried to steady ourselves, a member of their team rushed towards me and handed me an image. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was a blurry silhouette resembling a human figure captured by their sonar scanning in the river channel! Everyone speculated that this might be where the missing drowning victim was located. However, due to the image's unclear nature, no one could definitively confirm it was him. Thus, they urgently gathered everyone for a strategy discussion.
After thorough analysis and discussion, we still struggled to reach a conclusive decision. At this point, all we could do was approach it with cautious optimism and take a chance. What made matters more complicated was that according to our scans, the indicated location not only had exceptionally turbulent waters but also concealed many dangerous and unpredictable underwater obstacles. Even knowing that challenges lay ahead and dangers lurked everywhere, we could not afford to back down even an inch if it meant saving someone from peril!
We carefully selected and dispatched a group of experienced and well-trained professionals to execute water rescue operations at the target location while another boat remained anchored nearby for safety support. All other arrangements continued according to our meticulously crafted plan.
However, unexpectedly, despite these brave individuals tirelessly working for three straight hours in shifts without any results! This outcome felt like a bucket of ice water poured over us all at once, plunging everyone into extreme anxiety and unease. Countless questions surged through each person's mind: Had we made serious errors in our earlier judgments? Or were there crucial factors we had overlooked?
As everyone wore worried expressions and time slipped away unnoticed, the fiery sun began its descent toward the horizon behind the mountains. We had hoped to conduct two or even three more rounds of intense searches before nightfall in hopes of discovering something that could turn around our current situation. But just then, something shocking happened: ripples suddenly appeared on the calm surface of the river as water levels began rising visibly.
After urgent investigation and understanding of the situation, the truth finally surfaced: not far upstream lay a large reservoir that opened its gates every evening around six o'clock to release water—a process that would continue throughout the night until dawn. Watching as torrents of water surged toward us like a wild stallion breaking free from its restraints—now just one or two meters away—we realized it would soon reach our feet. Faced with such an urgent situation, everyone sprang into action without hesitation; we quickly worked together to move all essential equipment and gear to relatively safe areas. Undoubtedly, this sudden turn of events added immense difficulty to an already challenging rescue operation.
