Finally, he reached the bottom of the cave. He carefully opened the door of the cat cage, gently placed the kitten inside, and secured the door to prevent it from escaping. Then, he looked up and gestured an upward motion towards us.
Upon receiving the signal, we wasted no time and immediately began to pull him and the cat cage up, inch by inch. The entire process was slow but steady, without any unexpected incidents.
Before long, they successfully reached the surface. Looking at the unharmed kitten and our teammate who was completely fine, everyone let out a sigh of relief, their faces breaking into smiles of contentment. This tense and thrilling rescue operation had come to a successful conclusion, taking about an hour in total.
As we packed up our tools and prepared to leave, the young girl hurried over, her eyes filled with gratitude as she repeatedly thanked us. "I can't thank you enough! If it weren't for your timely help, my little kitten..." She was so emotional that her words became jumbled, tears welling in her eyes. Faced with her sincere gratitude, we simply smiled and waved our hands, indicating that it was all part of our duty.
During our first animal rescue, everything went unusually smoothly. However, unexpectedly, shortly after this first success, we received another mission—this time to rescue another kitten! I couldn't help but wonder why it seemed so strange; it was as if these missions were planned in advance, appearing one after another in a series.
Despite my surprise and confusion, as a member of this team, we quickly sprang into action and devoted ourselves fully to this new rescue task. Fortunately, up until now, there had only been those two similar missions. Since then, we hadn't encountered any situations like that again. Perhaps it was just a coincidence; who knows?
This time, a woman from a rural area called us to say that a kitten was stuck in a gap of an old cement pipe. With our first experience behind us, I thought this should be manageable; it would only take about an hour. We quickly organized our team and set off with our equipment.
When we arrived at the scene, what lay before us completely overturned our previous expectations. The pipe was filled with rubble; these stones were incredibly hard, as if made from concrete. Even more challenging was that the narrow gap was barely wide enough for two hands to squeeze through. The trapped kitten was positioned just out of reach of our hands.
In an instant, this dilemma left everyone present feeling stuck. I immediately began to observe the surroundings carefully, trying to find a suitable position to initiate the rescue operation but ultimately found nothing. Just when everyone felt helpless, one teammate shouted loudly: "Put on gloves! Find someone with slim hands and long arms to try pulling it out!" Upon hearing this suggestion, I felt a flicker of hope; perhaps this idea was worth a try.
After some discussion, we decided to choose a teammate who stood about 180 centimeters tall for this rescue mission. At first, everything seemed to go relatively smoothly as he carefully extended his hands into the gap and slowly reached toward where the kitten was trapped. However, as he went deeper, the difficulty increased because the internal structure of the pipe was far more complex than we had anticipated. Although he managed to touch the kitten, no amount of pulling could budge it; it seemed firmly stuck.
After trying for a while longer, his hands began to ache from exertion but there was still no progress in the rescue effort. With no other options left, we gathered again to brainstorm if there were any other effective methods to save this poor kitten.
Just at that critical moment, a flash of inspiration struck me like lightning—a seemingly simple yet effective idea: smash it! Once this thought emerged, it quickly occupied my entire mind space; I became convinced that this was the solution to our problem. After careful consideration, I finally resolved to adopt this approach.
Next, to ensure that our actions proceeded smoothly and avoid unnecessary trouble, I began communicating with the crowd around us. Through inquiries, I learned that this area had long been abandoned and those facilities had been neglected for years. More importantly, such small-scale demolition activities would not cause significant impact. However, what complicated matters was that this was merely an ordinary rescue mission; we hadn’t brought any specialized demolition tools with us. Faced with this predicament, I could only hope that the enthusiastic crowd would lend us a hand.
Just as I was worrying about this situation, a loud voice rang out from among the crowd: "I have some tools at home; I'll go get them right now!" Looking in the direction of the voice, I saw a burly man striding towards us confidently. Upon closer inspection, I noticed several obvious features indicating he worked in construction—he wore slightly worn old shoes caked in dirt and had fine dust in his hair; he looked like someone who had been through quite a bit.
Seeing this scene brought me joy; I quickly replied: "Thank you so much! You've really helped us out!"
Before long, the tools arrived. After securing the demolition site and putting on protective gear, we officially began dismantling it. The sound of the jackhammer echoed loudly as everyone watched expectantly. After a short while, the noise stopped; one of our teammates reached in and felt around before declaring that things should be alright. He then brought over a cage and after three swift movements finally rescued the kitten.
At that moment, I vaguely heard applause from some members of the crowd as we handed over the cage containing the kitten to its owner. Everyone showed their kindness by offering water and food for it while we quietly packed up our gear and slipped away unnoticed. As our vehicle started up and prepared to leave, we saw everyone waving goodbye enthusiastically; my heart couldn't help but feel elated.
Though this was just an animal, it represented a life—every life deserves respect. We will always uphold our mission to save lives to the best of our abilities.
