"Come on, have some Huo Xiang Zheng Qi Shui to cool off, and drink some water to rehydrate," I said as I opened the bottle and handed it to him.
Seeing this, the other team members gathered around, expressing their concern for his condition. Someone thoughtfully took out some energy-boosting chocolate from their pack and handed it to him, saying, "Have some chocolate; it will help restore your energy." Another person actively fanned him to help cool him down. Everyone worked together, hoping to alleviate his discomfort as quickly as possible.
Under everyone's attentive care, the team member gradually stabilized. He looked at us gratefully and said in a slightly hoarse voice, "Thank you all. I really appreciate it." Hearing this made us smile at each other, filling our hearts with warmth. After all, in this challenging journey, the mutual care and support among team members is the greatest strength to overcome difficulties.
After a brief rest, everyone began to recover from their fatigue, both physically and mentally. At that moment, I leaned closer to him and asked with concern, "How are you doing? Are you okay?" He flashed a confident smile and nodded firmly, saying, "Don't worry; I'm fine!" With his reassuring response, we set off on our journey once again.
That day, the weather forecast had predicted a maximum temperature of only a few degrees Celsius, but the actual heat felt far more intense. The scorching sun mercilessly baked the earth as if trying to melt everything away. We trudged along under the relentless heat; time ticked by slowly, and before we knew it, about two hours had passed. As noon approached, the sun hung high in the sky, making it unbearably hot.
To prevent heatstroke and ensure everyone's health and safety, I decisively decided to take action. I directed everyone to use the rain tarp they carried to set up a makeshift sunshade. Although this temporary shelter was rudimentary, it provided us with some much-needed shade and relief from the heat.
Once we finished setting up the sunshade, we decided to have our meal right there while waiting for the sun's intensity to lessen before continuing our journey. Everyone took out various snacks and food they had carefully prepared in advance, turning it into an impromptu outdoor feast. The array of food before us was dazzling—there were pickled vegetables, crispy chips, delicious canned goods, and convenient self-heating hot pots among many others. This scene reminded me of the spring outings organized by my school during childhood; it was just as lively and joyful.
After lunch, with the sun shining brightly and a gentle breeze brushing against our cheeks, we felt particularly comfortable and relaxed. Seizing this wonderful moment, I decided to teach everyone a practical skill: how to accurately identify directions in the wild.
When the sky is clear and cloudless, we can use a watch to determine direction. This method is very simple; you just need to remember a mnemonic: "Half the hour hand towards the sun; where twelve points is north." I explained this technique in detail while demonstrating it. Watching their focused expressions filled me with a sense of accomplishment.
In addition to using a watch for navigation, we also learned another method based on shadow movement to determine direction. By sticking a stick or branch upright in an open area and marking where its shadow falls at different intervals—about every half hour or hour—we could connect these points to form an approximate east-west line. The end that formed later points westward. Although this method is relatively more complex, mastering its principles and details can also help us find the correct direction in the wild.
As night fell and if we were lucky enough to see a clear starry sky, the Big Dipper would undoubtedly become our most reliable navigation star. By locating the Big Dipper's spoon-shaped formation and extending a line between its two stars at the scoop's edge about five times that distance, we could find a bright star—that would be Polaris—indicating true north.
Everyone showed great interest in this knowledge; each person listened attentively as I explained it and occasionally asked questions or shared their insights. After this learning session, it was evident that everyone’s spirits were much higher than they had been at noon; they no longer seemed confused or anxious like before.
I took out my phone to check the map and was pleasantly surprised to find that we had covered nearly half of our route. This meant we were one step closer to our destination, boosting everyone's confidence significantly. So after a brief rest for adjustments, we continued on our path toward our goal with determination.
Due to unstable signals in the mountains, our phones weren't very reliable. We noticed something was off when checking our phones; it seemed we had veered off course—we should have gone left instead of right due to signal issues leading us astray onto a more difficult path on the right side. Returning would waste time and energy since the road was also poor. After discussing it among ourselves, we decided to stick with the new route. Suddenly ahead of us appeared a steep cliff that posed quite a challenge; without ropes or gear available, everyone hesitated until one team member stepped forward confidently suggesting he lead us through. This teammate was an experienced rock climbing coach who had climbed many mountains before; we agreed to let him go first.
Although high up, this cliff had some slope making it not too difficult to climb. Before long everyone managed to scale it successfully; however, near the top there were some thorny plants that pricked a few teammates but nothing too serious—after simple first aid they continued onward.
We resolutely chose an entirely new route thinking it would be just a small attempt; little did we know this new path would significantly shorten our travel time. However, as time passed into evening darkness began creeping in; if we waited until nightfall in these pitch-black mountain surroundings without any light source it would pose significant safety risks for everyone. Realizing this I decisively urged everyone to pick up their pace.
Fortunately, the latter part of our journey went exceptionally smoothly without any obstacles or unexpected situations arising. Finally around six in the evening we arrived at our destination. Without much time for rest we quickly gathered together for a brief summary of our adventure before hastily boarding our return vehicle. Some teammates still seemed lost in thoughts about their recent adventure feeling somewhat reluctant.
On our way back home I observed my companions closely. Their hands and feet bore bruises from bumps along the way yet they remained unfazed maintaining cheerful spirits while chatting animatedly amongst themselves. Witnessing this scene stirred up complex emotions within me—I felt both exasperated by their carefree attitude yet amused by their optimistic outlook that made me chuckle involuntarily.
