Lunch was served, and Shi Song arrived with a beaming smile. The small kitchen of the Qi Family felt a bit cramped, so they moved the dishes to the hall.
Chen Ruolan sat at the head of the table, while Shi Song and Wu Dayong took seats on the left. Wu Dayong frequently served dishes to Shi Song, but after a couple of times, Shi Song put down his chopsticks in annoyance. "Do I not have hands? You’ve already chewed on those chopsticks; why are you serving me food? If you don’t mind it being dirty, I certainly do."
"How can you say that about my brother?" Wu Shengnan protested, clearly unhappy. "My brother only serves me food."
"Shi is right!" Wu Dayong interjected, acknowledging his brother's oversight.
Qi Yuan paused with a piece of preserved meat halfway to Wu Shengnan's bowl, unsure whether to continue. Wu Shengnan leaned her bowl closer to his chopsticks and said, "I don’t mind you, unlike some people."
"Shengnan!" Wu Dayong scolded her, realizing that his silly sister didn’t understand she needed something from Shi Song.
Seeing that Wu Shengnan was about to get upset, Qi Yuan quickly said, "I’m going to gather firewood this afternoon; there are mushrooms to pick on the mountain. You’re not coming?"
"Great! Let’s eat quickly then!" Wu Shengnan exclaimed. "Qi Yuan, I want chicken wings!" Her attention shifted entirely to food.
Qi Yuan found a chicken wing in the soup for her and also served her a bowl of broth.
"You’re so nice, Qi Yuan!" Wu Shengnan said with her mouth full of chicken wing, her words muffled.
Qi Yuan smiled broadly, digging into his rice heartily.
Qi Chong and Yu Chunmiao exchanged glances but remained silent. These two seemed to be on the path to a good life.
After finishing their meal, Qi Yuan took Wu Shengnan and left. In the kitchen, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law washed the dishes while Wu Dayong attempted to bring up a request with Shi Song.
"Shi Song, I know you’re skilled in Qi Huang Zhi Shu. My boss has been suffering from rheumatism for a long time; could you take a look at him?"
Shi Song picked at his teeth with a silver needle and replied casually, "Sure, two hundred taels."
He knew that a high-ranking official had come to town suffering from rheumatism and had been looking for him for quite some time. He hadn’t wanted to agree initially, but seeing as he was about to build a house, he couldn’t afford to turn down money.
Wu Dayong was taken aback for a moment and weakly asked, "Could it be less?"
Shi Song spat out some food stuck in his teeth and said dismissively, "You can choose not to treat him; it’s not me who’s in pain."
Wu Dayong didn’t say anything more; after all, it wasn’t his money. "So when are we heading to the county?"
"I’m not going," Shi Song replied nonchalantly as he crossed his legs. "You bring him to Yu's Bone Setting in town first before coming back to me. Don’t try to flaunt your authority; otherwise, I won’t treat him even for two thousand taels."
Wu Dayong felt a weight lift off his shoulders and immediately agreed. Qi Chong emerged with the completed book, and Wu Dayong hurriedly asked, "When will you take me to the Tang family?"
"Someone like you, coming right in and saying you want to marry their daughter, aren't you afraid of scaring them off?" Qi Chong replied. He took out an inkpad for Shi Song. "She’s not going anywhere; why not spend more time getting to know her so she can develop some feelings for you?"
Wu Dayong slapped his thigh and said, "You’re an experienced one; teach me how to pursue a girl."
Qi Chong thought for a moment about all the experiences he had with Yu Chunmiao and decided to be more protective. He felt he hadn’t really done much for Yu Chunmiao aside from looking out for her.
Wu Dayong rubbed his eyes, nodding in a half-understanding manner.
Yu Chunmiao came out after washing the dishes and asked, "Qi Chong, whose family has a large stone mortar for pounding rice?"
"Alright, I’ll ask at the Villagers' Meeting this afternoon," Qi Chong replied.
Shi Song paid for the homestead and prepared to leave town. "I need to buy some brick tiles and hire someone. Farewell."
Qi Chong pulled him back. "We can hire someone from our village. I’ll help you check the prices this afternoon. My second brother is a carpenter, and he has plenty of apprentices. Just let him know; you won’t have to worry about anything."
The traps on the mountain are all set up now, and the villagers are just patrolling daily. It’s good for them to find some work and earn a little money.
"You’re doing well as village chief, always thinking of the villagers," Shi Song said, patting his shoulder. "Alright, it’s settled then."
He turned to Wu Dayong and reminded him, "Remember, Yu's Bone Setting costs two hundred taels. When the people arrive at the broken temple in Village East, come find me."
After he left, Wu Dayong began discussing his sister's marriage with Qi Chong.
