Wu Dayong entered with a brisk pace, carrying two bags himself since he hadn’t brought any servants today.
"Qi Brothers," he said, "that Cao Dewang has already been sent to prison. He’s facing a death sentence for murder. Are you satisfied now?"
Qi Chong raised an eyebrow and nodded, a barely perceptible smile appearing on his face.
Yu Chunmiao pointed at the items in Wu Dayong's hands and remarked, "You brought so many things last time; why are you bringing more this time? You’re being too extravagant."
Wu Dayong chuckled sheepishly. "These aren’t for you. I’m going to visit the Tang Family Girl later, and it wouldn’t be polite to go empty-handed."
He turned to Qi Chong and asked, "Could you show me the way, Qi Brothers? I’m afraid it might not be appropriate for me to go alone."
Qi Chong was annoyed by his eagerness; it seemed he was desperate to marry someone, wanting to visit at every opportunity. He scoffed, "If you want to go, just go. I won’t push anyone into the fire pit."
Wu Dayong was taken aback, puffing out his cheeks in frustration. He had already apologized, yet Qi Chong continued to hold his past mistakes against him. "I say, Qi Brothers, can we let bygones be bygones? We’re almost family now. As the saying goes, it’s better to resolve enmity than to deepen it. Why are you still going on about this?" With that, Qi Chong walked into the hall and sat down.
Hearing this, Wu Dayong’s face lit up with a smile as he took a seat across from him and struck up a conversation. Yu Chunmiao took out the tea leaves that Wu Dayong had gifted them and brewed a pot for everyone.
Chen Ruolan passed by the hall carrying a basin of freshly washed clothes. Wu Dayong quickly stood up to greet her. She merely glanced at him before heading off to hang the clothes.
Qi Chong mentioned the marriage between Qi Yuan and Wu Shengnan to her, but she still couldn’t bring herself to like him after he had once teased her daughter-in-law.
Wu Dayong awkwardly sat back down as Qi Chong asked him, "I heard from your sister that you’re a military officer? My family is poor; why would you want to marry your sister into my family?" Although they had money, their home still looked dilapidated. He couldn’t believe that just a casual brush of lips would lead to marriage.
Wu Dayong was not one to adhere strictly to conventions.
He sighed deeply and became serious for once as he spoke about the siblings' situation. He had fled from the north at fifteen years old when his sister was only eight. After arriving in the south with nothing but hardship, he had no choice but to enlist in the military while his sister followed him through their struggles.
Wherever he went for military service, his sister was fostered by nearby farming families. After much effort in raising her, she grew up without proper guidance and remained innocent as if she were a blank slate.
Though he had become an official, his sister was not suited to be the wife of someone from a high-status family. It would be better for her to live a stable life in a good household rather than struggle in a wealthy but chaotic environment. Farming families were good; they cherished their wives and lived their lives without taking concubines or engaging in affairs.
Qi Chong swallowed a mouthful of tea, thinking that his brother was doing quite well. "What about you? Why are you in such a hurry to get married?"
Wu Dayong showed a hint of embarrassment. "Well, that's... hard to say."
"Such confusion!" Qi Chong summarized, recognizing the reason behind it. "I don't bully others or forcefully take Min Girl away."
Wu Dayong felt wronged. "Whoever I fancy, I will definitely marry with proper arrangements. What's wrong with that?"
At that moment, Qian Duo Duo called out cautiously, and both of them looked towards the courtyard. Who else could it be but the youthful-looking Shi Song?
Shi Song entered with a hearty laugh. "Qi, I heard you became the village chief! Does that mean I can buy Homestead now?"
He glanced at Wu Dayong and added, "Oh, we have a guest! I must have come at a bad time."
Wu Dayong quickly stood up to greet him, a glimmer of joy flashing in his eyes. This was precisely the person he had been searching for over the past two months—Old Immortal! He hadn't expected to encounter him again.
Yu Chunmiao heard the commotion and came out of the house. Upon seeing Shi Song, she greeted him warmly. "Uncle Shi is here! Please sit down; I'll get some water and tea for you."
She thought to thank Shi Song; if it weren't for him, Qi Chong's leg wouldn't have healed so quickly.
Qi Chong stood up and said, "Please sit; I'll go look through some books to see if there's still any Homestead available."
After Yu Chunmiao finished pouring the tea, she left the room since there were only men present and it wasn't appropriate for her to stay longer.
Inside the room, Qi Chong examined the village map with a furrowed brow.
"No Homestead?" Yu Chunmiao asked.
Qi Chong nodded but then shook his head. "There is one place available for temporarily accommodating Zhang Guihua. He isn't one of the refugees settled by the court; they won't allow us to open up wasteland."
