Cao Dewang stumbled back, urging the fallen thugs to rise and protect him. Three or four of them managed to get up and stand behind him, while the others either feigned injury or were genuinely unable to move.
Qi Chong tossed aside his carrying pole and stepped forward, looking at Cao Dewang. "Now you understand why I dislike you, right?" His words were directed at Wu Dayong.
Wu Dayong also turned his gaze to Cao Dewang, his eyes inadvertently focusing on the large black mole on the tip of his nose. "Brother, just let me handle this one for you. I guarantee he won't dare set foot in your village again."
Qi Chong spoke in a calm tone, as if nothing had happened earlier. "Ah, everyone in your town knows him. He’s notorious for bullying the villagers and trying to force himself on Min Girl. Once we deal with him, we can talk."
Qi Chong understood that only Wu Dayong could truly handle Cao Dewang. So he decided to give him a chance to redeem himself.
Wu Dayong continued to stare at Cao Dewang. "For your sake, I’ll take care of this."
Qi Chong felt something was off about his words and finally shifted his gaze from Cao Dewang's face to Wu Dayong's. Seeing him still focused on Cao Dewang, he chose not to comment further.
Cao Dewang took two steps back. "Why are you all looking at me while you talk?"
Wu Dayong grabbed his collar and punched the mole on his nose. "This mole is so annoying; every time I see it, I want to hit it." After striking him, Wu Dayong pushed him forward, causing the thugs behind him to fall again.
Cao Dewang realized he wouldn’t gain anything today and decided to seek revenge another day. Holding his bleeding nose, he threatened, "Just wait; I’ll have that Tang girl for myself!"
The thugs who had previously been unable to rise suddenly sprang to their feet and followed him.
The bad guys were gone, and the Tang family hurried out to express their gratitude.
Tang Qingqing, crying like a child, caught Wu Dayong's eye with her pitiful appearance, stirring something in his heart. He approached her and asked, "How old are you? Are you engaged yet?"
Her mother, Sun Rong, thought it was just casual concern and replied honestly, "Seventeen, not engaged yet."
Qi Chong cleared his throat, causing Wu Dayong to swallow back what he was about to say next. He had intended to suggest that if she wasn't engaged yet, she might as well not be—she could become his wife instead.
A villager tentatively asked, "Village Chief, will the meeting this afternoon be held? Are you coming?"
Qi Chong nodded slightly.
With matters settled, Wu Dayong didn’t enter the Qi family courtyard but instead took his sister and got into a carriage, leaving a message that he would return after dealing with Cao Dewang.
Before getting into the carriage, Wu Shengnan turned to Qi Yuan and said, "Qi Yuan, I’ll come back in a few days. I’ve been thinking about you; don’t forget to think about me too."
Qi Yuan stood at the door, his body stiff, and unexpectedly replied, "Oh."
Wu Shengnan turned around with a satisfied, shy smile and entered the carriage.
Qi Chong looked at his younger brother's flushed face, which carried a hint of disappointment, and called him inside.
The two brothers sat across from each other at the writing desk. Qi Chong asked him, "Do you like Wu Shengnan? Do you want to marry her?"
Qi Yuan had never liked a girl before and wasn't sure if he liked Wu Shengnan, so he simply replied, "I don't know."
Qi Chong sighed in exasperation, thought for a moment, and said, "When she's around you, do you feel happy? Would you miss her if she were gone? When you're working, do you find yourself thinking about her?"
This time, Qi Yuan understood and nodded eagerly.
"Got it. You may go now."
