The two women were so shocked that they couldn't close their mouths, but it was Yu Chunmiao who regained her composure first. "Let's talk this out calmly; don't make it so intense, I can't handle it."
Wu Dayong chuckled and strode into the hall, sitting down confidently. It was only then that Chen Ruolan remembered to go pour some water for the guests.
Wu Shengnan tugged at Qi Yuan's sleeve, feeling shy as she asked him, "Do you want to marry me?"
Qi Yuan glanced at his furious older brother and lowered his head, saying, "I’ll listen to my brother."
Wu Shengnan looked at Qi Chong and turned around, taking a deep breath. Gathering her courage, she walked up to Qi Chong. "You have to agree, even if you don't want to. After all, he kissed me, and my brother said your family is good; I think your family is good too."
Facing this naive girl, Qi Chong found he had no anger left in him. His disdain was directed solely at Wu Dayong; remembering how he had teased Yu Chunmiao made him furious. He scolded his younger brother sharply, "Get back inside."
Qi Yuan obediently retreated into the house. Wu Shengnan looked at him reluctantly but didn't dare say anything and stood behind her brother.
Qi Chong sat across from Wu Dayong while Yu Chunmiao took a seat beside him. Chen Ruolan also sat down after bringing sweet water.
"My brother and your sister are at fault here," Qi Chong said, suppressing his anger. "But he did save your sister; let's consider it even and forget about the marriage."
Wu Dayong wore a bitter expression. "Qi Brothers, why do you look down on me so much? That day was truly a misunderstanding. Even without you, if your wife didn’t agree, I wouldn’t have done anything. Everyone has an appreciation for beauty; I may be rough around the edges, but I would never force someone against their will."
Wu Shengnan nodded vigorously. "Yes, yes! My brother is twenty-three and still hasn't married; he's just a bit anxious." She turned to Yu Chunmiao. "Sister, my brother thinks you're beautiful and just wanted to ask you; he wouldn't really tease you."
Yu Chunmiao sized up Wu Dayong and thought she could believe he was thirty-two.
Chen Ruolan seemed to understand what was happening. She slammed her hand on the table and pointed at Wu Dayong. "What? You teased my Yu Chunmiao? Get out! Just pretend my Yuan Er never saved your sister; take your things away—we don’t need your thanks."
Wu Dayong shot a glare at his sister; she really had no filter, and now things were getting worse.
Chen Ruolan was about to throw everything off the table.
"It's too late now, Auntie! Qi Yuan kissed me because he wants to marry me!" Wu Shengnan said innocently.
Chen Ruolan's body stiffened as she shouted loudly, "Yuan Er! You come out here!"
Qi Yuan quickly ran out of the room and stood in front of his mother.
Smack! Chen Ruolan raised her hand and slapped him. "Who taught you that? Just because someone saved you means you can take advantage of them? If your father finds out, he'll scold me in his dreams tonight for not teaching you properly."
As she spoke, she started crying. Qi Yuan quickly knelt down to apologize. "Mother, please don’t cry! It was my fault; just don’t let it hurt you again!"
Wu Shengnan hadn’t expected her words would lead to Qi Yuan getting slapped. She stepped in front of him and explained to Chen Ruolan what had happened that day when they accidentally kissed.
"It was an accident; we didn’t mean it! Auntie, please don’t be angry."
Wu Dayong was truly exasperated with his younger sister. He had said it was intentional, and now it had turned out just like that. She rushed to explain, and did so quite clearly.
Yu Chunmiao thought that Wu Shengnan was a good girl, straightforward and without guile. Otherwise, she wouldn't have shared such private matters with her brother.
She tried to smooth things over, saying, "So that's how it is. Yuan Er, get up and help your mother back inside."
Wu Dayong wanted to say something more, but unexpectedly, Qian Duo Duo started shouting from outside the courtyard. Lin Qiujiu rushed into the yard, panting heavily as he leaned on his knees. "Village Chief, quick! Tang Zhiping's family is in trouble!"
Qi Chong glanced at the Wu siblings and then at Lin Qiujiu. It was truly a chaotic day.
