The next day, Qi Chong ground the rice and arrived at the village, where the meeting gong under the Banyan Tree sounded. Those who hadn’t heard it continued their work, while those who did rushed over. Most of them were elderly men and women.
It was Qi Chong's first time speaking to everyone as the village chief. Although he wasn’t particularly nervous, he felt somewhat awkward.
“I’ve gathered everyone here to let you know that I plan to take you all into the mountains. If anyone wants to join tomorrow, please come here in the afternoon during the hour of Shen. You can disperse now.”
After he finished speaking, he intended to leave, but the villagers stared at him in shock and did not disperse.
“What’s wrong? Didn’t you hear me clearly? I’ll say it again,” he raised his voice. “I plan to take everyone into the mountains to earn some money before the New Year. Please help me spread the word; I won’t be visiting each household individually.”
The villagers still stood frozen in place, and Qi Chong helplessly rubbed his forehead.
Just as he was about to repeat himself loudly, a villager spoke up, “Do you really want to take us into the mountains to make money? Don’t you resent us for not lending you money to save your father back then?”
Qi Chong walked among the villagers and softened his tone. “Yang Zhengshan has already been taken care of. Now that I’m the village chief, I have a responsibility to help you all live better lives. You can disperse now; it’s quite hot.”
He walked directly in front of Lin Qiujiu. “Aunt Lin, please talk to the villagers for me; my family is busy, so I won’t be able to visit each household.”
Lin Qiujiu hadn’t expected her input would be useful and readily agreed.
She stopped Qi Chong and said, “The rabbits in the old temple were released by you, right? Zhang Guihua has been asking around about who it was. I saw you carrying a bow and some game back home; it must have been you.”
“Did she thank you?”
Qi Chong nodded slightly and then left.
Once Qi Chong was gone, Zhang Guihua’s family grabbed some sunflower seeds and began visiting each household.
Just after lunch, Qian Duo Duo became alert when Qi Chong opened the door; her heart raced.
Wu Dayong entered with Wu Shengnan, followed by a male and female servant. They weren’t riding horses but had come in a carriage.
“Qi Brothers,” Wu Dayong said with a grin, “I told you we’re fated! I didn’t dare come looking for you, but here I am.”
As he spoke, he took Wu Shengnan’s hand and walked straight into the courtyard.
Upon seeing Qi Yuan carrying firewood in the yard, Wu Shengnan cheerfully called out, “Brother Qi Yuan! I brought my brother here to thank you!”
The servants carried large bundles while a maid held several paper-wrapped boxes—what they contained was unclear—as they headed straight for the Hall to set them down.
Qi Chong leaned against the doorframe with his hands on his hips, looking disdainful. “Thanks for bringing gifts; now take your things and leave.”
Wu Dayong responded unexpectedly, “Leaving is not an option. Your brother kissed my sister; I’m here to discuss marriage.”
Qi Yuan dropped a pile of firewood, and Qi Chong looked at his younger brother, giving a wry smile before stepping forward to ask, "Is it true or false?"
Qi Yuan stared blankly and nodded. Before he could say anything, Qi Chong kicked him in the backside a few times.
Qi Yuan just stood there and let him kick, but Wu Shengnan stepped in front of him, both fierce and frightened. "You, you, you can't kick him! He didn't do it on purpose! Besides, I don't mind!"
As she spoke, her voice grew weaker; this future brother-in-law could be terrifying when he got angry.
The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law heard the commotion and came out from their respective rooms. Chen Ruolan hurriedly asked, "Qi Chong, what's going on?"
Wu Dayong, with an incredibly thick skin, stepped forward and called out to his in-laws, "I'm Shengnan's brother. I'm here today for two reasons: first to thank your second son for saving my sister, and second to discuss their marriage."
