Qi Rong followed Lu Ziyou to the Lu Family and was arranged to stay in Lu Zhi Xun's courtyard. His monthly allowance was directly given to him by Lu Ziyou, and at the end of each month, Yu Chunmiao would settle the accounts with him. The monthly expenses for food and lodging were also settled monthly, amounting to two taels of silver.
Qi Chong and Yu Chunmiao bought him two sets of clothes, shoes, and writing materials. They also purchased some folk paintings for Lu Zhi Xun, which featured simple characters that were not as difficult as those in books, allowing him to read along slowly and improve his stutter.
Sudden heavy rain blocked Yu Chunmiao's path to the shop, so the two stayed overnight at the same inn as before. Qi Chong routinely helped Yu Chunmiao wash up, and afterward, he would hold her close as they lay together.
Yu Chunmiao wore shorts and only covered herself with a thin blanket on top. Unlike Qi Chong, who often went without clothes in the room, she preferred to maintain some modesty. It was quite an eye-catching sight.
As soon as Qi Chong lay down, he leaned over to kiss her neck. Before long, the thin blanket was pulled down, and his warm breath danced across her chest. His hands were gentle yet firm; Qi Chong never favored one side over the other.
He whispered a few words into her ear, gazing at her as if she were a precious treasure. Yu Chunmiao's cheeks flushed a deeper shade of red.
In a soft voice that was barely above a whisper, tinged with shyness, she said, "I know you like it; can you not say it out loud?"
Didn’t Qing Niangzi say that if you have thoughts, you should express them? Qi Chong looked at her innocently.
Hey! Has he learned to use her words against her now?
"Is that so?" Yu Chunmiao rolled over and pinned him down, pinching his cheek playfully while shaking his head. "Why don’t you ask where my poetry comes from? Why don’t you ask how I train dogs?"
Without hesitation, Qi Chong replied, "Didn’t you say you had secrets that I shouldn’t ask about?"
"You!"
Yu Chunmiao was left speechless. Her intelligence stemmed from modern knowledge and twenty-eight years of life experience. Qi Chong’s cleverness was genuine; she could never win a verbal sparring match against him.
Playing coy was her only strategy. She feigned anger and turned away to present her back to him.
As Qi Chong coaxed her gently, they ended up tangled together again, their playful banter taking on a different flavor altogether.
On the first day of school, it was still Lu Zhi Xun who woke Qi Rong up. When he finally opened his eyes, it took him a moment to realize he was at the Lu Residence.
He had been so excited the night before that he couldn't sleep, and a splash of cold water in the morning helped him wake up a bit.
After breakfast, the two of them paid their respects to Lu Ziyou. It was nothing much, just a simple greeting: "Uncle, Nephew, we’re off to the County Academy." Qi Rong followed suit and called out "Uncle" as well, with no hesitation.
Lu Ziyou gave them a few words of advice, emphasizing unity and cooperation, and then they set off. The County Academy was quite far away, so they had a carriage to take them there.
Inside the carriage, Qi Rong's singing filled the air: "Oh little Xiao Er Lang, carrying that school bag to class, just afraid that I’ll be scolded for being lazy and not showing my face to my parents." The song was one that Yu Chunmiao had taught him on their way yesterday; she thought it was quite fitting.
Lu Zhi Xun clapped his small hands and eagerly urged, "Brother, sing it again!"
Qi Rong affectionately ruffled his hair and sang it once more.
"Xun Er, no, father," Lu Zhi Xun said.
"Brother doesn’t have a father either," Qi Rong replied. "But mother says that father can see us from the heavens."
"Xun Er, be good; let father see."
"Yes, we should all study hard so that father in heaven will be happy. Who knows, maybe our fathers up there know each other and are watching over us together."
On their way back to Beishan Village, Yu Chunmiao switched from children's songs to love songs, singing sweetly to Qi Chong all the way without repeating a single tune.
"Sweetly sweet, you smile so sweetly..."
