Chen Ruolan, in a fit of emotion, twisted Qi Chong's ear and scolded him, "What? She hugged you? Why didn’t you just push her away?"
Qi Chong obediently bent down to let his mother twist his ear, then reached for Yu Chunmiao's hand to explain, "I did push her; I just wasn't used to being rough with a girl and didn't manage to push her away in time. It won't happen again."
Yu Chunmiao shook off his hand and huffed at him, "The herbs are almost ready; why aren’t you grinding the Rice Flour yet?"
Chen Ruolan released her son and wrapped her arm around Yu Chunmiao's shoulder, asking, "Are you not angry anymore?"
Qi Chong also awaited her answer.
Yu Chunmiao didn't want to let Qi Chong off the hook so easily, so she lifted her chin and said, "Let’s see how he performs."
What more was there to say? Qi Chong obediently went to grind the flour; he needed to show his best side. If his wife got upset and flew off in anger, where would he go to cry?
As Qi Chong worked, Yu Chunmiao leaned closer to Chen Ruolan and whispered, "Mother, I'm not really angry; I'm just teasing him. Don't keep defending him; it makes it less fun for me."
Upon hearing this, Chen Ruolan covered her mouth and laughed. It was indeed a bit meddlesome of her; she encouraged Yu Chunmiao to tease him until he couldn't sleep at night.
The two women chatted and laughed in the kitchen while Qi Chong reflected on himself under the eaves.
What was this nonsense about not being rough with girls? That rule was out the window now.
With the stove busy every day, the family’s lunch and dinner consisted of quick-cooking noodles. Sometimes they made noodles, other times dumpling wrappers, along with fragrant Dumpling Soup.
Qi Chong was the cook.
No matter what he made, it always included meat and vegetables.
Chen Ruolan's vegetable garden had yielded cucumbers; they could be quickly smashed for a refreshing dish. Scrambled eggs were also quick to prepare, taking less than two minutes.
The family had no complaints.
During lunch, they reviewed the Zhou Min incident.
Chen Ruolan voiced her concerns: "I saw that Zhou Min; she claimed she came to ask me for help, but she kept glancing at the pot. Did she catch wind of something?"
Qi Chong nodded in agreement. "I heard from the delivery guys that there are always people hanging around the cart. Now someone is even sitting at the back of the cart; otherwise, people would be lifting the curtains."
Yu Chunmiao pondered for a moment and said, "Things can be hidden, but you can't cover up the smell. Plus, Qi Rong brings home so many herbs every day, and with Xian Ke Lai doing so well, it's inevitable that people will start connecting the dots. Right now, we need to keep Zao Hui Shui and Rice Flour hidden."
"If we can keep those two things concealed, we won’t have to worry about others discovering our secret recipe."
Qi Yuan asked Yu Chunmiao, "Hidden from whom? Is someone really going to come here to check?"
As soon as these words were spoken, everyone felt a chill run through them.
Qi Chongtu pondered for a moment before asking Chen Ruolan, "Where should we dispose of the used Zao Hui?"
Chen Ruolan pointed towards the vegetable garden and replied, "Over by the fence of the vegetable patch."
Yu Chunmiao immediately understood and said seriously, "Second Brother, you should dig a hole and bury it this afternoon. The used Zao Hui looks different from the fresh ones, and it's easy for people to notice."
It seemed they had to be extra cautious.
Qi Yuan couldn't wait until the afternoon. He quickly shoved the noodles from his bowl into his mouth, grabbed a hoe, and headed out.
At that moment, Qi Rong hesitated and said, "Sister-in-law, I went south today looking for fairy herbs and saw a large patch, but it was all picked clean by someone."
Yu Chunmiao set down her bowl and chopsticks, her expression grave. "We haven't even revealed our wealth yet, and someone is already causing trouble. If word gets out, we’ll be in a lot of trouble."
Little did she know that they had recently bought two whole bags of rice, which had caught the attention of the villagers. They occasionally bought meat as well, and Chen Ruolan's rosy complexion when seen outside only confirmed that the Qi family was doing well.
The Qi family's previous misfortunes were all due to revealing their wealth.
Chen Ruolan gritted her teeth and said, "From today on, I will wear my most tattered clothes when I go out. Tomorrow morning I need to buy bricks; I'll go rent an ox cart and wear that old outfit of mine."
