Qi Chong hurried to help Qi Qin wipe her tears. "Why are you crying? Even with a limp, I can still take care of you." He had prepared himself to be limping for life, and after a period of gloom, he had finally pulled himself together.
"That won't do!" Yu Chunmiao said firmly. "If it can be treated, then it must be treated. A good person shouldn't just be left like this!" The whole family was moved by Yu Chunmiao's words.
Chen Ruolan added, "Brother Zheng, bless us."
Qi Rong chimed in, "Sister-in-law is stronger than my man."
Qi Chong declared, "Whether my leg gets better or not, I want to cherish you for a lifetime."
Qi Chong rushed to the kitchen to cook while the others quickly washed the bulbs. They managed to hang all the bulbs out to dry before nightfall.
As they lit the lamp to eat, they enjoyed stir-fried garlic sprouts with meat served over white rice, along with a plate of stir-fried greens. The family felt quite satisfied.
"Sister-in-law, I'll bring hot water to your room. Make sure to wash up well and rest early," Qi Dogleg said as he carried a full bucket of water. At ten years old, he found it quite easy to lift.
Yu Chunmiao pointed at him as he left with the water and praised, "Qi Rong has such great strength! I struggle just carrying this bucket. And that basket of bulbs? My back is sore from carrying it, but he walks around like it's nothing."
Chen Ruolan blushed slightly and said, "All three brothers are like you; they're all strong."
Later that night, Qi Rong returned to Qi Chong's room. In the middle of the night, Qi Chong got up to give Qi Qin some loquat water. Then he went outside and used his crutch to turn over some Bannxia bulbs.
"Why are you up?" came Yu Chunmiao's slightly sleepy voice from behind him.
Qi Chong turned around and saw her draped in a garment, holding an oil lamp under the eaves.
"Just checking on things; it’s easy for them to dry out," he replied.
Yu Chunmiao stepped forward, placing the oil lamp on the ground as she squatted down to turn over the bulbs. Indeed, there were still some damp ones underneath.
"You're afraid of snakes, aren't you? Why did you come out?" Qi Chong asked.
"I knocked on your door earlier," Yu Chunmiao explained. "I thought you were asleep." In truth, she had wanted to come out at night but had gathered her courage to knock on his door. After waiting a while without anyone answering, she felt a bit wronged but also appreciated how thoughtful he was in checking on the bulbs.
After finishing with the bulbs, Yu Chunmiao stood up and shyly said, "I need to go to the toilet; could you stay here for a moment?"
Qi Chong's heart softened at her request. He nodded in agreement.
"Don't stay too close," Yu Chunmiao said as she walked towards the toilet. After she came out, Qi Chong was still standing in place, which eased her mind considerably.
The next morning, before dawn, Yu Chunmiao woke up but quickly fell back asleep. After all, someone was making breakfast, so she might as well sleep in.
She indulged in a lazy morning and didn’t wake up until seven o'clock. Her body had been weak, and after a few days of exhaustion, she just wanted to rest.
After washing up and having breakfast, around eight o'clock, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law set off for the town.
The day before yesterday, Qi Rong had dug up half a basket of produce, but the two baskets they carried were overflowing, leaving some behind at home.
Upon returning to Chun Tang Pharmacy, Zhang Gui was surprised to see the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law carrying two full baskets. He hurried over to help them with their load.
"I thought you would only manage to gather one basket," he said, astonished by the amount they had brought back.
When he lifted the banana leaves to take a look, his excitement grew: "The quality is good!"
He called over two helpers to move the items to the backyard. After weighing them, it turned out to be fifty-three pounds and six ounces.
