Qi Rong looked at the object with disdain and said, "This thing is sticky and slimy, soft and mushy, filled with mud and sand. It's disgusting. We won't eat this; let's just gather some wild vegetables instead. It's everywhere; who would eat it? Is my sister-in-law really so foolish as to eat anything?"
Yu Chunmiao thought for a moment and recalled that people in this era indeed didn't eat Apple Snails because they found them dirty. She replied, "I've eaten this before, and it's quite delicious. If you don't believe me, I can gather some and cook it for you to try."
Qi Rong walked away with an expression that suggested she wouldn't argue with a fool. After all, she didn't expect her silly sister-in-law to gather wild vegetables; she was just here for a bit of fun. The water wasn't deep, so there was no real danger—she just needed to keep an eye on her and make sure she didn't wander off too far.
Yu Chunmiao had many hobbies in her childhood, and gathering Apple Snails was one of them—it was both relaxing and tasty. She picked some wild banana leaves by the water, took off her shoes, rolled up her pants, and stepped into the river.
The water was cool, and she could see every grain of sand and stone beneath the surface. Then she spotted a Clam—oh my, what incredible luck! Just like the Apple Snails, where there was one, there were bound to be many more. However, she decided not to be greedy; first, she would gather enough Apple Snails before trying to dig for Clams with her bare hands.
Before long, Qi Rong had filled a basket with wild vegetables, while Yu Chunmiao had gathered enough for a meal of Apple Snails and Clams. She noticed some chili peppers in the kitchen cabinet and planned to let the river delicacies sit overnight so she could showcase her culinary skills the next day.
Qi Rong became excited when he saw the Clam. "Sister-in-law, you found Niu Yang! I didn't even know there were any in the river; they've all been dug out in the village." He swallowed hard as if the Clam were already a dish ready to serve.
"Right? Tomorrow we can add some ginger to make a soup," Yu Chunmiao thought to herself, surprised that the term for Clam here was the same as in her hometown dialect from Hu Jian. Perhaps it was a matter of time and space—some things remained the same while others changed.
For instance, this Apple Snail just needed someone to take the first bite. Perhaps she would be the first person in this world to eat an Apple Snail.
Qi Rong nodded vigorously, suddenly convinced that maybe these Apple Snails were indeed edible. "My basket of wild vegetables isn't full yet; should we fill it up before heading back?" Yu Chunmiao asked respectfully, seeking her brother-in-law's opinion.
Qi Rong glanced at his sister-in-law's feet and said, "Sister-in-law, why don't you sit on that rock over there and rest for a bit? Put your shoes back on when you're ready; there's still plenty of time. I'll finish digging soon."
Unable to resist giving her brother-in-law's fluffy head a gentle rub, Yu Chunmiao gratefully accepted his kind offer. She sat on the cool rock in the shade, letting her feet air out while breathing in the unpolluted air—a refreshing change from modern industrial life. The mountains were beautiful here, life was simple; although they were poor, being surrounded by family felt wonderful. She was already starting to like this place.
Poverty could be changed. As a modern independent woman with a wealth of knowledge despite not having a high degree, she believed that living a life beyond mere survival should not be too difficult.
"Do people in the city eat Clams? Are they sold anywhere?" Qi Rong asked curiously.
Realizing what his sister-in-law meant, Qi Rong quickly understood—anything edible that could be easily found in rural areas had likely been consumed already; even Niu Yang was rare now. Even if they occasionally found one or two, it would only be enough for a bowl of soup—a treat for everyone who managed to gather some.
"I wonder if they sell them in the city now? How about I ask my brother when he comes back in a few days?"
Yu Chunmiao nodded and smiled, "No rush. This Clam won't run away. We can look for it later; there might be more around."
Ever since Qi Jinshan was bitten by a venomous snake and subsequently fell ill with lingering effects that wouldn't heal, Chen Ruolan no longer allowed the children to venture deep into the mountains. Qi Rong didn't dare to promise her anything; he simply said he would ask his mother when they returned.
