Lin Tian perfectly inherited Li Hao's high intelligence and was now in her fourth year of university. The family had settled in the capital, and Lin Xiaojing had become a Department-Level Cadre. Li Hao had transitioned from being the chairman of the Provincial Public Welfare Foundation to a position at the International Public Welfare Foundation, occasionally traveling abroad for International Rescue Seminars.
However, the carefree Lin Tian recently found herself troubled. The older brother she admired, Si Ye, was in a relationship. Lin Tian was furious, but her pride prevented her from showing it; if no one loved her, why should she care about him?
As the weekend arrived, Lin Tian returned home and spotted Si Ye at the entrance of their house. She didn’t rush over to him as she usually would; instead, she chose to ignore him and walked past. Si Ye caught her hand and asked, "Didn’t you see me?"
"Hello," Lin Tian replied curtly, shaking off his hand.
"Who upset our little princess?" Si Ye leaned closer to look at her.
He was youthful and vibrant, so handsome that passersby dared not stare.
"Tian Tian, you're back!" Wang Yi'an, playing in the yard, looked up upon hearing their voices and spotted Lin Tian.
"An An, what brings you here today? Is your brother with you?" Lin Tian asked just as a small figure rushed toward her.
As she bent down to embrace him, Si Ye snatched the child away.
"I’ve told you so many times, you can’t ask your sister for a hug!"
"Brother, let’s go! Sister is back; you should take us to the zoo!" Zhao An exclaimed eagerly.
"I’ll take you guys; your brother has a date with his girlfriend," Lin Tian teased Si Ye with a hint of annoyance.
"What girlfriend?" Si Ye looked confused.
Lin Tian was even more upset, especially since he hadn’t mentioned it to her. Fuming, she stormed into the house.
The adults were chatting in the living room when they saw Lin Tian rush in, followed closely by Si Ye.
"They must have had a little lovers' quarrel," Zhao Fei joked.
Li Hao shot Zhao Fei an annoyed glance. "Is Wang Lei not coming back this weekend?"
"Wang Lei is now the Deputy Director of the Xiangtian Provincial Public Security Bureau and is very busy."
"What does that have to do with you?" Zhao Fei retorted.
Lin Xiao couldn’t help but laugh; she knew Li Hao was upset because that boy from the Si family had taken his daughter away, which left him feeling disgruntled.
"Who told you I have a girlfriend?" Si Ye squeezed into the room just as Lin Tian was about to close the door.
"Don't you have it?" Lin Tian asked angrily.
"I should," Si Ye replied with a grin. Seeing Lin Tian upset, he decided not to tease her further. Wasn't it that little brat Wang Yi'an who said she couldn't even talk properly?
That day, when Wang Yi'an returned from school, he had been scolded. He happened to see Si Ye and asked if he had a girlfriend. Of course, he said yes; he wouldn't lose to a little kid.
"Are you feeling better now? Not angry anymore?"
"Who’s angry?" The girl's face flushed bright red.
"Then be my girlfriend. Otherwise, we'll both be laughed at by that little brat," Si Ye pressed on.
Lin Tian felt a surge of happiness inside and replied haughtily, "Who would be your girlfriend?"
"Then why were you angry just now?" Si Ye pointed out her naive thoughts directly.
Lin Tian wanted to deny it further.
Si Ye leaned in closer, trying to kiss Lin Tian.
Nervously, Lin Tian closed her eyes as Si Ye moved even closer.
Suddenly, there were two loud knocks, and the door swung open.
Lin Xiao was pushed forward by Li Hao. "Xiao Yao, Tian Tian, I brought you a tray of water."
Lin Xiao intentionally opened the door wide as she left.
"Li Hao, enough already! The kids are grown up and deserve their privacy," Lin Xiao said, feeling embarrassed herself.
"I just can't stand that kid from the Si family. He stuck to our Tian Tian when they were little, just like his father—unreliable."
"But Si Ye is a good kid. Handsome, polite, and most importantly, he comes from a good family," Lin Xiao thought Si Ye was the perfect choice for a son-in-law.
Li Hao knew this rationally but still felt that Tian Tian was just a child.
At Lin Tian's doctoral graduation ceremony, the families of Si Ningyuan and Mai Dong, Fang Shuoyan and Nan Jia, Wang Lei and Zhao Fei—all attended along with Lin Xiao and her husband. Even Lin Xiao's uncle's family from the south made the trip with four people.
Lin Tian thought it was truly a sweet burden. She was about to become famous at school; several luxury cars were parked at the entrance of the auditorium, and the dean personally came to greet them.
After the ceremony ended, everyone went to the Si family's hotel together.
As Lin Tian pushed open the door to the private room, the concierge inside set off the confetti. Si Ye knelt on the Red Carpet and asked, "Lin Tian, will you marry me?"
Lin Tian was so surprised that she couldn't respond.
Si Ye, unable to wait any longer, took her hand and slipped the ring onto her finger. Whether she agreed or not, she was his now. Without caring about the elders present, he leaned in and kissed her.
The onlookers erupted into enthusiastic applause, while Lin Tian felt as if she were in a public embarrassment scenario and pushed Si Ye away.
As the engagement party began, everyone could hear Si Ye repeatedly calling her "wife."
"Si Ye, enough! Lin Tian is only engaged right now; you two aren't married yet," Li Hao couldn't help but interject.
If there was anyone Si Ye feared, it was his future father-in-law. Though he felt somewhat resentful, he dared not act out.
Si Ye was overjoyed; all these uncles and older men had wives, and now he had one too.
"Si Ye, now that you're engaged, you're an adult. I'm stepping down from the board of directors," Si Ningyuan announced with significant news.
"Dad, no! I'm going to be the chairman. What are you talking about? You're only in your fifties; don't think about slacking off. I still want to date Tian Tian," Si Ye refused to be fooled.
After earning her doctorate, Lin Tian went to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a place Nan Jia had once aspired to go but ended up at Beijing Daily News due to unforeseen circumstances.
On her second day at work, Lin Tian was assigned to an overseas post.
To protect Lin Tian, Si Ye stirred up the board to participate in the Belt and Road Initiative. He shamelessly disguised his personal motives under a facade of public service, and Ningyuan Group unexpectedly reaped both fame and fortune.
Under the blessings of friends and family, Lin Tian and Si Ye entered the hall of marriage.
As Li Hao handed Lin Tian's hand over to Si Ye while gazing at Lin Xiao in the audience, he felt a whirlwind of emotions. What more could one ask for?
That night, Li Hao held Lin Xiao tightly as they struggled to fall asleep.
Before drifting off, Li Hao mumbled something about feeling youthful again.
Lin Xiao smiled as she fell asleep.
All they wished for was a peaceful life filled with gentle smiles and stability in this world.
