Three days later, when Lin Xiao came out of the Disciplinary Committee, Meng Kai was there to pick her up.
In the car, Meng Kai briefly explained the situation regarding the Management Committee and Gengwei Town. Accountant Zhou had assisted the Disciplinary Committee in filing a report, and Accountant Wang from Gengwei Town had been placed under investigation.
Then there was Ke Shuji; he had been taken in as well. Meng Kai guessed that Lin Town Head must already know about this, and after some thought, he decided to mention it.
Lin Xiao acknowledged that she was aware and asked who else had been implicated. Meng Kai recounted what he knew.
Lin Xiao felt a deep sense of melancholy; several of those involved were familiar faces. Especially Ke Hongxin—after she came to Gengxu Town for her position, she had even met Ke Hongxin's partner, an amiable older sister in her later years.
For years, Lin Xiao had thought they had endured the worst and were finally seeing better days, but she never expected Ke Hongxin would make so many mistakes. This incident made Lin Xiao increasingly aware of the profound significance of home.
She sent a WeChat message to Li Hao, letting him know she was out. After half a day without a response, Lin Xiao called him once she returned to the office.
"Li Hao, why did it take you so long to answer my call?" Lin Xiao asked, feeling frustrated.
"You’re out?" Li Hao replied, having just been on the phone with Wang Dawei last night while on set; his phone had been on silent.
"Can you come see me this weekend?"
Lin Xiao had just reviewed Lu Shijun's work schedule for the next few days and realized she wouldn't be able to visit him and Tian Tian.
"Dear, things are busy here; I’ll try to bring Tian Tian over to keep you company next week," Li Hao promised. He had committed to others and wouldn’t be in Yu Rao for half a month, so he could only keep Lin Xiao in the dark about his busy schedule.
Lin Xiao felt a bit regretful but understood. She initially thought about having Wang Mei bring Tian Tian to visit her but reconsidered since Wang Dawei might still need her assistance; she didn’t want to worry Wang Mei unnecessarily.
After several days of delays at work, Lin Xiao found herself extremely busy all day long.
Before the end of the workday, an unexpected visitor arrived, Ke Chenghui.
"Lin Town Head, I’m here to apologize," he said, standing awkwardly in front of Lin Xiao's desk.
"Ke Boss, please have a seat," Lin Xiao replied.
"I can't sit. I feel too ashamed," Ke Chenghui said, lowering his head like a schoolboy.
"Just sit down. If you stand there, I have to look up at you while we talk," Lin Xiao said with a hint of exasperation.
Ke Chenghui hesitated, unable to make up his mind.
"Ke Boss, I forgive you. After all, you explained the situation to the Disciplinary Committee," Lin Xiao reassured him.
"Actually, I was forced to frame you. I was also coerced into explaining the situation to the Disciplinary Committee," Ke Chenghui confessed, nearly on the verge of tears.
"Who forced you to explain the situation to the Disciplinary Committee?" Lin Xiao asked, genuinely unaware of this matter.
"The Director Wang from the An Bureau."
"Wang Lei?"
"How did he know what you did?" Lin Xiao questioned, puzzled.
"He was following me."
Lin Xiao felt that everything was interconnected and that clarity was finally emerging from the chaos.
As Ke Chenghui recounted how he had been pressured, he became emotional and shed a few tears.
After sending Ke Chenghui away, Lin Xiao dialed Wang Lei's number.
"Hello?"
"Lin Town Head, this is Director Wang's colleague, Jin Lai. He is currently unconscious and hasn’t woken up."
"What happened to him?"
