Zhou Qing and Hu Bo stood up to bid farewell.
"Zhou Accountant, could you stay for a moment?" Lin Xiao called out, stopping Zhou Qing in her tracks.
Hu Bo, understanding the cue, quietly closed the door behind him.
"Zhou Accountant, I have something I’d like to entrust to you privately. Please find a way to review the financial transactions of Gengwei Town from recent years," Lin Xiao continued.
"Head Lin, what if their finance department refuses?" Zhou Qing asked. Although she was somewhat reserved by nature, her professional competence was beyond question.
Gengwei Town has undergone significant renovations in recent years, and two rounds of audits have already been conducted. Aside from the safe, I will have them cooperate with you on everything else. Just don’t come across as too much of an auditor; be observant instead," Lin Xiao reassured her.
"Take your time with this. Whatever you find out, just let me know without making it public," she added.
Zhou Qing readily agreed and left the town head's office, letting out a long breath. Before coming here, she had only heard that this young and beautiful town head had strong backing. Upon meeting her, she indeed found her attractive; their half-hour conversation was devoid of any small talk and resonated with authority, completely contradicting the rumors of her being merely a pretty face.
During lunch at the cafeteria, Lin Xiao took the initiative to sit across from Li Hongxin and brought up the two new accountants joining the Management Committee.
Li Hongxin listened but didn’t pay much attention; he wasn’t responsible for that aspect of the Management Committee and assumed Lin Xiao was just making casual conversation.
Another half month passed, and Zhou Qing approached him again, stating that the accounts for Gengwei Town were balanced but had previously shown large sums of money coming in and out. However, there hadn’t been any such activity in the past six months.
Lin Xiao, not well-versed in finance, asked what that meant.
"It’s hard to say without looking at the accounts where the funds flowed in and out," Zhou Qing explained. "Unfortunately, those details are quite confidential and inaccessible to me."
Lin Xiao relayed this information to Wang Dawei since it was still a lead worth pursuing.
A week later, while waiting for new information from Zhou Qing that never came, Lin Xiao encountered an unexpected visitor: Lu Shijun, an organizational officer from Gengxu Town.
The door to Lin Xiao's office was usually open; during these sweltering days of summer, it was merely ajar.
Lu Shijun knocked lightly on the half-open door and entered upon hearing an invitation from within before closing the door behind him.
"Head Lin, I’m here to report on some matters," he said.
Lin Xiao was reviewing internal notifications from the county when she heard Lu Shijun's voice and nodded for him to continue speaking.
As an organizational officer responsible for relaying communications from the county, Lu Shijun often visited her several times a day; it was perfectly normal for him to come in for a report.
