On the morning of the first day of the Lunar New Year, while Lin Xiao was still asleep, Tian Tian climbed down from her toddler bed, stumbling as she tugged at her hair and called for her mother. Lin Xiao's heart sank; just as she was about to reach out to hold her, she suddenly realized she wasn't dressed. She pushed Li Hao and said, "Hey, Tian Tian is awake. You need to take her; I’m not wearing any clothes."
Li Hao hastily threw on a robe and took Tian Tian out of the room. When he returned, Lin Xiao had already gotten dressed.
"Why didn’t you wait for me?" Li Hao grumbled, feeling a bit dissatisfied as he thought about enjoying some quality time with Lin Xiao.
It was the first day of the New Year, and with Grandpa and Grandma still downstairs, Lin Xiao thought they should hurry down. After all, she wanted to maintain her dignity.
The Li family was small; Grandpa Li's hometown was in the northwest, and he had come to the capital during the revolutionary years. Grandma Li was a young lady from a prominent southern family who had embraced progressive ideas and stayed in the capital to pursue her education.
Professor Sun's family hailed from Xiangtian Province. She had remained in the capital for Li Bo Mountain and also because of his departure from there. During holidays, the Li family was not large and had no strict customs.
On New Year's Day, only Wang Mei remained at home; the cooking aunt and security personnel had been sent away for the holiday. When they came downstairs, Wang Mei and Professor Sun had already placed dumplings and sweet rice balls on the dining table.
Lin Xiao nudged Li Hao playfully, saying, "This is all your fault."
Li Hao casually ruffled her hair in response.
After the meal, Lin Xiao helped Wang Mei clear away the dishes. Her phone buzzed incessantly with messages, and occasionally a call would come in. At that moment, Lin Xiao glanced at the caller ID and then at Li Hao, who was busy with the child. Wiping her hands on a towel, she answered the phone.
"Happy New Year!" Lin Xiao said cheerfully.
"Happy New Year! Are you in Beijing?" Wang Lei asked after seeing Lin Xiao's group message wishing everyone well for the new year. Unable to resist, he called her.
For so many years, she had spent New Year's alone without anyone to talk to. Didn't she say that he was her child's uncle? That should mean it was okay for him to call her, right?
"Have you eaten dumplings?"
"I have. The cafeteria made some with celery and pork, cabbage and pork, and chives and pork," Wang Lei said, counting them off with a hint of boredom.
He had just learned that Yang Feng was released by the prosecutor's office on the twenty-ninth of the twelfth lunar month due to insufficient evidence.
During the New Year, he didn't want to bring it up with Lin Xiao, so they chatted idly instead.
"Are you still at work?"
"Yeah, everyone else has families to go home to, but I've taken all the shifts."
When Lin Xiao heard this, a pang of sadness washed over her.
"Since it's the Spring Festival and there are fewer people around, ask the cafeteria lady to make some of your favorite dishes," she suggested, glancing at Li Hao. She felt a bit uneasy but hadn't considered hanging up on Wang Lei.
"After the holiday, let me treat you two to dinner," Wang Lei offered. He wanted to meet Li Hao since he had once been in charge at Yu Rao and likely understood the murky waters of Yurou County better than he did.
Wang Lei personally oversaw the interrogation files for Yang Feng. After the files were transferred to the prosecutor's office, they didn’t request any further investigation or raise any objections; they simply withdrew the case.

"Alright, then let Li Hao treat you," Lin Xiao said, knowing that Wang Lei wasn’t someone who would say such things without reason.
Wang Lei then informed her about the police deployment situation at tourist attractions during the holiday. After chatting for a while longer, he hung up.
Lin Xiao turned to Li Hao and confessed, "Wang Lei called me and said he wants to treat you to dinner after the New Year. I told him we would treat."
"Sounds good," Li Hao replied. He thought that since they had professional interactions, it wouldn’t be right to completely cut off contact between Lin Xiao and Wang Lei. Besides, Wang Lei hadn’t done anything wrong.
After all, they couldn’t blacklist everyone who admired Lin Xiao.
