On the way back to Lin Xiao's home, Li Hao was driving while Lin Xiao held Tian Tian and Wang Mei sat in the back seat.
As they approached their hometown, Lin Xiao felt a wave of nostalgia; it had been almost a year since she last saw Lin Qi. "Our family conditions are quite simple, so I hope you two won't mind," Lin Xiao said politely. Although Wang Mei was there to help take care of the children, Lin Xiao had long considered her family.
"You've said that three times already. I'm from the countryside too," Wang Mei replied with a smile.
Lin Qi stood at the village entrance, gazing down the road and chatting with passersby. When she saw Lin Xiao roll down the car window, she quickly urged, "Hurry and close the window; don’t let the child get cold!"
Li Hao chimed in, "Mom, please get in the car."
"No need, it's just a couple of steps. I'll walk back," Lin Qi waved her hand and jogged ahead.
Once they arrived home, Li Hao unloaded milk, rice, oil, seasonal fruits, and pork and beef from the trunk, not forgetting to hand over a big red envelope. "Mom, buy whatever you like," he said obediently.
Lin Xiao was touched by Li Hao's thoughtfulness as she noticed the food he had prepared along with the red envelope. "That's too much," Lin Qi said as she quickly accepted the envelope.
"Auntie, I'll go make dinner," Wang Mei offered as she handed Tian Tian back to Lin Xiao.
"Sister Wang, why don’t you sit in the main room with the kids? I’ll cook with my mom," Lin Xiao suggested, pulling Lin Qi toward the kitchen.
"You silly child! Why don’t you let the nanny cook? What are you meddling for?" Lin Qi complained.
"Mom, I've told you before; Sister Wang is not a nanny. She’s family to me and Li Hao." Lin Xiao was worried that Lin Qi might say something inappropriate.
Lin Qi opened her mouth to respond but fell silent when Lin Xiao grew impatient. "Mom, if you bring up Sister Wang or my house-buying situation again, I won’t help you at all."
Lin Qi obediently kept quiet after that.
They planned to stay at their old home until the afternoon of New Year's Eve before heading to Xiang Tian to meet Professor Sun and then go to Beijing.
As they were about to leave, Lin Xiao looked at her increasingly frail mother and felt her heart soften. "Mom, after the Spring Festival, why don’t you come stay with me?"
"You’ve already married; it’s not proper for me to go there." Lin Qi replied. "But I appreciate your concern. Think about giving Tian Tian a little brother. I know you don’t like hearing this, which is why I’ve kept quiet."
I can see that your son-in-law treats you well. Look at his good family background and how handsome he is. If you don't cherish him, there will be shameless women who will come after him.
Lin Xiao felt overwhelmed, somewhat relieved that she hadn’t gone with him. She believed in Li Hao, until the day she no longer did. If that day ever came, she would be heartbroken, but she would take Tian Tian with her.
As she was leaving, Lin Xiao took out the gold bracelet she hadn’t given that year and slipped it onto Lin Qi's wrist.
From now on, don’t work too hard; enjoy a comfortable life at home. I will take care of you along with Lin Xiao.
Li Hao checked the time and knocked on the door to the inner room. “Mom, Lin Xiao, it’s time for us to go.”
When Lin Xiao came out, her eyes were a bit red.
During the New Year, Lin Xiao hadn’t returned home to celebrate; she couldn’t be there herself and felt guilty towards Lin Qi.
“Mom, why don’t you come with us to Beijing for the New Year?” Li Hao suggested again, unable to bear seeing Lin Xiao sad.
“I won’t go; it’s not proper. You two should hurry along; I’ll go to your uncle’s house for the New Year,” Lin Xiao replied.
She had originally encouraged her to spend the New Year at her grandmother's house, but Lin Qi stubbornly insisted that a married daughter shouldn’t celebrate at her parental home.
Ultimately, they were bound by blood, and Lin Xiao understood the constraints imposed on Lin Qi’s thoughts. She was good to herself, but that goodness was mixed with many worldly notions.
Now that Tian Tian was here, Lin Qi seemed more at ease.
As they drove onto the highway, Lin Xiao's emotions still hadn’t settled.
“I just went to your uncle’s house next door and gave him a red envelope to ask him to help take care of Mom,” Li Hao said, holding Lin Xiao's hand in the passenger seat.
Lin Xiao hadn’t expected Li Hao to be so thoughtful. “Thank you.”
“Fool, why are you thanking me?” Li Hao squeezed her hand gently. “Get some sleep; you didn’t rest well last night.”
Still immersed in her feelings of gratitude, Lin Xiao shot a glance at Li Hao; Wang Mei and Tian Tian were still sitting in the back.
Back then, when Li Hao first came to the Lin family, Lin Xiao had been hurt by Lin Qi’s preference for boys over girls.
