Lin Xiao could see that Li Hao was genuinely angry.
"Li Hao, I really don’t know what you want to know. But I assure you, there’s nothing going on between me and Wang Lei! If you keep this up, I’m going to get angry too."
Lin Xiao knew how to hit Li Hao's soft spot. After pouting for a moment, she stood on her tiptoes and kissed him.
Li Hao thought angrily that he wouldn’t fall for this trick, but he couldn’t resist her beauty. After turning his head a couple of times, he finally succumbed.
After a long French kiss, Lin Xiao lay in Li Hao's arms, catching her breath.
"Please don’t be mad at me; it makes me sad," Lin Xiao murmured as she nestled into his embrace.
"Do you know who Wang Lei is?" Hearing Lin Xiao’s aggrieved voice, Li Hao couldn’t bear to stay angry with her any longer.
"I don’t know." Lin Xiao hadn’t heard Wang Lei mention anything about himself, and Kong Youyou hadn’t said anything either.
Li Hao sighed inwardly. She had met someone through a blind date, yet she didn’t even bother to ask about his background. He didn’t know whether to call her foolish or just naive.
Years ago, Wang Lei was the youngest chief officer in the Xiang Tian Public Security Bureau. During an operation, he sacrificed himself to protect his comrades from terrorists. After his death, he was posthumously awarded first-class honors and recognized as a martyr. His mother couldn’t bear the grief and took her own life shortly after. Wang Lei was only twenty-three at the time.
Upon hearing this news, Lin Xiao looked at Li Hao in disbelief, her eyes filled with shock and pity for Wang Lei. She never imagined he had such a tragic background; she always thought he was open-minded and insightful, but it turned out he had endured so much.
"You’re not allowed to feel sorry for him," Li Hao said stubbornly.
"How could his mother bear to do that? He was just a child." As a mother herself now, Lin Xiao found it unbearable to think of any child suffering.
Li Hao was also surprised by the news; it was hard to believe that someone could be so deeply devoted.
"If I died, would you take your own life?" Lin Xiao was taken aback that such a rational person like Li Hao would ask such a question.
She thought about how to respond—would saying yes please him? But she didn’t want to go against her true feelings.
"Last time, when you were lying there, I was so heartbroken that I forgot my own pain from the C-section; all I felt was anguish that made it hard to breathe. But I never thought about dying with you because I never considered what I would do if you were gone."
"No matter what happens in the future, if something happens to either of us, we shouldn’t accompany each other in death; Tian Tian wouldn’t be able to handle it." As Lin Xiao thought of this, tears began to fall.
Li Hao held Lin Xiao in his arms, feeling that he had been too cruel. He knew Wang Lei's background and pondered why the organization would send him to Yu Rao. With a sigh, Li Hao recalled how he couldn't help but investigate Wang Lei's background, worried about his character and whether he had ulterior motives towards Lin Xiao.
After Ke Hong's visit that afternoon, a line of thought became clear in Li Hao's mind: the higher-ups were planning to take action against Yurou County. During his time there, he had realized that Yu Rao was beyond saving. The aggressive economic development and reforms were merely superficial; the root problems still remained.
One tree does not make a forest, and one flower does not bring spring. Now, Li Hao felt that a fresh breeze was about to arrive.
"Lin Xiao, your grandparents are getting older. Why don't you go work in Beijing?"
Li Hao was unsure if Lin Xiao truly did not understand the gravity of the situation or if she was deliberately keeping it from him. He only wanted to take her away from this place of turmoil.
"You should take Tian Tian with you first. Two years will pass quickly, and Chen Chen has always hoped for you to be there," Lin Xiao countered, unexpectedly encouraging him instead.
"Ning Yuanxuan's investment here hasn't fully materialized yet. If I leave now, I won't have the face to meet Nan Jia or Si Ningyuan again."
Li Hao fell silent for a moment. Lin Xiao was right; he just didn't want her to be in any danger.
"Then let Sister Wang take Tian Tian; I'll stay here with you."
"Li Hao, you should go with Chen Chen. His sincerity this time is evident. You know I've been struggling with postpartum depression; you're aware of that."
"Go take a shower; we can discuss this matter later."
