Wang Lei could no longer sit still upon hearing this news. Yang Feng was cunning; instead of hiring someone to do his dirty work, he had his workers spread rumors about Lin Xiao and Li Chenghui, making Lao Xing live in a dangerous house.
So it was him, Lin Xiao realized suddenly. She had previously worried that Lao Xing might have other intentions regarding the housing assessment and had specifically asked the village secretary to handle the initial conflict resolution and explanations.
"What are your plans?" Wang Lei asked, a hint of concern in his voice.
"I have no plans. When soldiers come, I’ll block them; when water comes, I’ll dam it," Lin Xiao replied defiantly. She refused to believe that someone like Yang Feng could remain arrogant for long.
Wang Lei understood all too well how stubborn Lin Xiao was; otherwise, she wouldn’t hold onto her principles so fiercely, especially for a man who had caused her so much trouble. With a sense of helplessness, he left her office and turned to find Li Hong.
"Hello, Secretary Li. I am Deputy Director An Wang Lei," he said, knocking on the door before walking straight in.
Deputy Director An and the town secretary were both department-level officials, but Deputy Director An clearly held more power.
Li Hong appeared particularly enthusiastic. "Director Wang, hello! I've heard about the young and capable officer from the Provincial Security Bureau coming to our county; it’s truly a pleasure to meet you."
"I’m here to discuss yesterday’s situation at Cui Ping Nan Yuan," Wang Lei said as he accepted the cup of water Li Hong offered.
"Thank you for your help yesterday, Director Wang. I happened to be in a meeting at the county yesterday; luckily, you arrived in time," Li Hong expressed gratefully.
Wang Lei skipped the small talk and directly addressed Yang Feng's situation.
Li Hong was taken aback upon hearing this; he hadn’t expected Yang Feng to be so devious and couldn’t help but blame Lin Xiao for her youthful impulsiveness.
Once Wang Lei finished explaining, he left the Gengxu Town government.
"Lin Town Head, you’re aware of Yang Feng’s situation now, right?" Li Hong called for Lin Xiao. "Are we really not going to allocate any funds?"
"Secretary Li, do you think that if we allocate funds now, everything will just end? I plan to invite the county auditing department to cooperate with the engineering assessment unit for a thorough inspection of Taihu Road," Lin Xiao retorted.
In his anger, Li Hong forgot to control his temper and snapped back.
Lin Xiao’s expression changed as she replied firmly, "Secretary Li, this matter is not something I will back down from."
"Do you know what happens when you corner a dog into a dead end?" she added ominously.
"If this were just a personal grudge between him and me, I could let it slide. But if he can incite the masses over a few hundred thousand yuan..."
Yang Feng was someone she absolutely could not indulge.
Lin Xiao and Li Hong parted ways on bad terms.
A few days later, Lin Xiao received the appraisal report issued by a third-party evaluation agency regarding Cui Ping Nan Yuan. The report stated that the building in the Cui Ping Nan Yuan complex was classified as Grade A, with no risk points and suitable for normal habitation; however, the other buildings were classified as Grade B, with risk points that required repairs.
Lin Xiao met with Li Chenghui beforehand and handed him the appraisal report. After reviewing it, Li Chenghui let out a deep sigh. "Lin Town Head, what do you propose we do about this?"
Lin Xiao suggested that the amount allocated for Li Chenghui's project funds be reduced, and that the funds due to him should be used for repairing the buildings until they met Grade A standards.
Li Chenghui was taken aback.
Lin Xiao encouraged him to propose a solution himself. Li Chenghui hesitated in Lin Xiao's office for quite some time before reluctantly agreeing in the end.
Seizing the opportunity, Lin Xiao invited representatives from the County Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau to participate in a meeting aimed at addressing the repairs needed for some of the buildings in Cui Ping Nan Yuan. Villager representatives also attended the meeting.
Ultimately, an agreement was reached: the town government would allocate a designated vegetable plot for each household in the building; the county housing authority would lead the commissioning of a professional organization for repairs, with final acceptance conducted by the appraisal agency. Li Chenghui would bear the costs of the repairs.
In addition to covering repair costs, Li Chenghui finally received a timely payment of ten thousand yuan as the final installment. Compared to the outstanding debt of ten thousand yuan and daily visits from Lao Xing, he felt a sense of relief knowing he could sleep soundly now, with ten thousand yuan safely tucked away in his pocket.
