"Are you Li Hao's wife?" Chen Chen's eyes sparkled with mischief.
"Chen Chen, don't get any funny ideas," Nan Jia said, sensing what was on Chen Chen's mind.
"Is it Lin Xiao?" Chen Chen straightened up.
Lin Xiao looked at Chen Chen, whose hair was tied in braids and sported a small mustache. There was an odd sense of dissonance about her that made it hard to guess her age. "What do you want from me?"
"Do you want to be the lead in my next drama?"
"Huh?" Lin Xiao looked at him in confusion, then glanced at Nan Jia.
"Get to the point and stop rambling," Nan Jia warned. He had dealt with Chen Chen before and knew how his mind could wander if not kept on track.
"I promise you'll become a big star."
"Thank you, but I have a job and I don't plan on quitting," Lin Xiao guessed that this wasn't the real reason for Chen Chen's visit.
"Alright then. Li Hao's script is great; I'll take it. I want him as the producer and the screenwriter, but he doesn't want to," Chen Chen finally returned to the main topic after seeing Lin Xiao's firm refusal.
"If he turned you down, why are you here?" Lin Xiao was even more puzzled.
"It's because of you. He said he promised to always be by your side," Chen Chen said, a hint of frustration in his voice. "It's infuriating; I'm not keeping him locked away."
Nan Jia knew that Li Hao had been staying in the countryside with Lin Xiao. Initially, he thought it was just a transitional phase, but now he admired Li Hao for his determination.
"You still need to talk to him about this; I can't decide for him," Lin Xiao said firmly.
Chen Chen had invited Lin Xiao partly to persuade her but mostly out of curiosity about the kind of woman who had captivated Li Hao so completely.
After parting ways with Chen Chen, Lin Xiao appeared somewhat troubled.
"Are you still hesitating?"
"Yes, I'm afraid I'm not worth it," Lin Xiao admitted. She would rather endure separation from Li Hao than have him give up everything for her.
"If he's made up his mind, it means you're worth it," Nan Jia said seriously to Lin Xiao.
"And what about you? I can see that Yan Ge loves you. He seems cold towards everyone else, but when he looks at you, his eyes are filled with affection."
Lin Xiao sensed that Nan Jia was unhappy; her discontent seemed to seep through unintentionally, reflected in her gaze as if she had lost faith in the world.
Nan Jia smiled at Lin Xiao; there was a sense of weariness in that smile. "Lin Xiao, cherish your time with Li Hao. Wealth and fame are fleeting; love is what truly matters."
Li Hao and Fang Shuoyan didn't have a habit of eavesdropping, so they stayed back while the two chatted. However, when the conversation turned towards them, they couldn't help but listen in.
Li Hao felt a pang of sympathy upon hearing Lin Xiao's words. He knew she lacked confidence and security, but he hadn't realized just how anxious she was. Fang Shuoyan's face was so tense it seemed like water could drip from it, radiating an aura of menace. Yes, Li Hao thought, there was a palpable sense of hostility in the air.
He recalled that when they were younger, Fang Shuoyan had been cool but not like this; back then, she had only shown a hint of coldness towards others, except for Nan Jia.
"Don't you have work today?" Nan Jia asked as she noticed Fang Shuoyan approaching.
"Yeah, I came over after hearing from Li Hao that you were out shopping."
Nan Jia pulled out her phone only to find it dead. "Sorry, my phone's out of battery."
Fang Shuoyan took Nan Jia's hand and they headed out together. Lin Xiao got into Li Hao's car. "Is Tian Tian asleep?"
"Yeah. Did you meet Chen Chen today?" Li Hao had already received a call from Chen Chen.
"If you didn't have to keep me company, would you agree to meet him?"
"I don't know; I don't answer hypothetical questions." Li Hao hadn't considered that before. "As I told you before, all my choices are based on what makes me happy."
"I'm sorry; I won't trouble myself like this again," Lin Xiao said, expressing her regret over her own worries.
"And about Nan Jia, please don't ask about that next time. Yan Ge almost lost his temper today."
