After changing the baby's diaper and coaxing him to sleep, Li Hao noticed that Lin Xiao still hadn't come out, so he went in to check.
Lin Xiao was comfortably lying in the bathtub, her hair cascading over her chest as she slept peacefully. With a sigh of resignation, Li Hao picked her up and placed her on the edge of the bed, using a towel to dry her hair. Tonight's reward was gone.
In the midst of a good dream, Lin Xiao woke up in Li Hao's arms. Seeing the man asleep beside her, she couldn't help but reach out to stroke his defined brow and lips.
Li Hao had already been awake when she began to caress his face. He kept his eyes closed, not expecting her gentle touch to last so long. Grabbing her hand, he rolled over to face her.
Lin Xiao nearly gasped but was quickly silenced. As her consciousness began to fade again, she heard Li Hao mention the reward from yesterday.
The details of their conversation faded into oblivion.
Lying on the bed, Lin Xiao watched as Li Hao busily moved about, and for a moment, she wondered if it was a mistake for her to insist on taking on this role.
After helping Lin Xiao tidy up, Li Hao climbed into bed and held her close. "The conditions here in Gengxu Town are much better; you just need to follow your previous work direction."
"Ke Hongxin is now the Secretary; with you as the Town Mayor, he will fully support you. Just go ahead and do what you need to do; don’t worry about anything—I'm here for you."
"You’re different now." Lin Xiao listened as Li Hao murmured in her ear about work matters and couldn’t help but reflect on how she used to see him.
"What was I like before?" Li Hao asked curiously about Lin Xiao's past impression of him.
In the past, he could sum things up in one sentence; he would never say two sentences or repeat anything.
"Now that you're my wife, how could it be the same?" After hearing Lin Xiao's words, Li Hao ruffled her hair and sighed. "You really shouldn’t have taken that bucket of waste for me."
"Was it because I’m a woman that you didn’t want me back then?" Lin Xiao recalled that incident and couldn’t help but sit up; she had been upset about it at the time.
Noticing that Li Hao didn’t answer but instead looked down, she realized she wasn’t wearing any clothes and quickly scrambled back into his embrace.
"Maybe... now I regret not doing it sooner."
Lin Xiao playfully tussled with him until their child woke up. She quickly put on her pajamas and rushed over to pick up the baby just as Li Hao came over with a bottle and another diaper.
At eight o'clock, Lin Xiao informed Wang Mei to come over and take care of the child before heading to work himself.
Ke Hongxin convened a meeting for all personnel in Gengxu Town, including the Team Secretary, Village Head, and Accountant. The meeting room was packed with people. Ke Hongxin formally introduced Lin Xiao as the newly appointed Town Head of Gengxu Town.
A murmur spread through the crowd as people whispered among themselves. Those in the know speculated that Lin Xiao was the wife of the previous County Party Secretary, and soon the rumors circulated widely. Some older town officials bitterly remarked that it was merely nepotism.
Seeing the chatter below, Ke Hongxin shouted angrily, "Did you not hear me speaking?" accompanied by a loud bang on the table. The room quickly fell silent.
"Now, let us invite our Town Head Lin to speak," Ke Hongxin bellowed again.
Scattered applause broke out in response. "Did you all skip breakfast this morning?" Ke Hongxin stood up and led the applause himself. The sound of thunderous clapping filled the room.
Lin Xiao had previously worked in Gulou District's Township but had never experienced sitting in front of over a hundred uncooperative faces while trying to speak. Looking at his speech notes, he suddenly lost interest; a heartfelt speech seemed unlikely to impress these people. He hadn't expected that the first hurdle would be this one.
