Lin Xiao woke up again from the pain, the anesthesia had worn off, and the incision from her cesarean section began to throb. The doctor had instructed her to try using a catheter to urinate, but despite her efforts, her face turned red and she was unable to do so.
A nurse arrived shortly after to press on her abdomen to help expel the lochia. As the nurse applied pressure, Lin Xiao let out a heart-wrenching scream, her face pale with agony.
"Can you please stop?" Sun Professor could no longer bear to watch; she felt helpless.
"That’s not possible. If the lochia doesn’t clear out completely, it could lead to lifelong issues," the nurse replied nonchalantly.
Blood seeped through the bandage, and Wang Mei noticed that Lin Xiao's clothes were soaked. She hurried over to help change her into a fresh nightgown, though there was really no need for a change below since she had a catheter in place.
Lin Xiao had never felt so humiliated, completely exposed before others. At that moment, she felt an overwhelming need for Li Hao. "Mom, where is Li Hao? Why hasn’t he come yet?"
Sun Professor reassured her, "He’ll be here as soon as he can."
Seeing her mother-in-law's repeated evasions, Lin Xiao picked up her phone and dialed his number, but no one answered on the other end. "Mom, is Li Hao out? Is he coming or not?"
Panic set in; she was certain he had gone out. He wouldn’t miss this moment.
During the National Day holiday, Li Hao had submitted a report. He understood that such matters couldn’t be resolved with just a piece of paper.
He met with Jia Lu to discuss terms. If she wanted their child to carry the Li surname and enjoy the protection of the Li family for life, she would have to report everything she knew. In return, he promised to provide for their child and help them go abroad.
Without Li Boshan’s protection, Jia Lu was like a drifting weed—now merely a discarded pawn.
Jia Lu didn’t know whether it was for money or for her child’s sake, but she divulged everything she could to Li Hao. In truth, she didn’t know much; otherwise, she wouldn’t still be alive and safe. All she had were a few names of friends from their training days.
Those few names were enough for Li Hao to dig deeper. From those women’s connections, he uncovered several key figures who were buried beneath layers of intrigue.
Li Hao sent Jia Lu’s daughter, Jia Jia, to the Li family—whether as leverage or out of concern, he couldn’t allow this child to become Jia Lu’s weakness.
Li Hao handed over the information Jia Lu provided along with his findings to those involved in the matter. These individuals were political rivals of significant figures; overnight, two factions emerged.
Li Hao stepped back into the shadows while subtly pushing events forward, gradually releasing what he had collected and what Li Boshan had left him.
The web grew larger; his opponents hadn’t anticipated how intricately Li Hao had woven his plans. Assassins targeted him directly on routes he frequently traveled for an entire month.
A bullet struck Li Hao’s body; fortunately, he was wearing a bulletproof vest under his coat. The impact knocked him down.
The gunfire attracted his bodyguards who rushed in with a resolve for mutual destruction against the assailants. One guard shielded Li Hao from further harm while another dragged the attacker away. In that brief moment of chaos, a human bomb detonated nearby.
One guard sacrificed himself in the explosion while the one protecting Li Hao was also injured but managed to get them both to the hospital. They both survived the immediate danger from yesterday's attack; however, the surviving guard sustained more severe injuries.
Sun Professor connected the call to the newly assigned guard for Lin Xiao.
"How is he?" Lin Xiao struggled to keep her emotions in check, fighting back the urge to break down.
"Li Hall Master is severely injured, but he's no longer in critical condition," came the reply.
"I want to video call. I need to see him," Lin Xiao insisted, unwilling to trust anyone else's words.
During the video call, Lin Xiao saw Li Hao lying there, his head and face wrapped in bandages, his features marred by bruises. His eyes were closed as he lay quietly.
She covered her mouth with her hand, unable to hold back her tears.
