When Li Hao saw Lin Xiao come out, he quickly hid behind the sofa. Wang Mei hurried to the kitchen to serve some porridge. Lin Xiao took a couple of bites of the porridge before rushing off to vomit.
Wang Mei brought over milk, soy milk, steamed buns, dumplings, and half a bowl of noodles, placing them in front of Lin Xiao. Lin Xiao tore off a piece of the bun and managed to keep it down.
"Li Hao, are you leaving?" Lin Xiao noticed the suitcase by the door.
"Yes," Li Hao thought. Once this matter was settled, he would spend more time with her.
Lin Xiao felt a bit annoyed with herself for not being strong enough and for being so emotionally sensitive. She went to the entrance and took out two masks from the drawer. She put one on herself and handed the other to Li Hao, then hugged him tightly. "You go ahead; I'll wait for you and the baby."
Li Hao held Lin Xiao close, reluctant to let go.
Days passed, and Wang Mei kept preparing different meals for Lin Xiao. Most of the time, Lin Xiao could only manage a couple of bites before running off to vomit again. Three months had gone by, and instead of gaining weight, Lin Xiao had lost four or five pounds.
During this time, Professor Sun watched with concern and brought a pregnancy expert home to check on her. Before the expert even arrived, the smell of disinfectant had already made Lin Xiao feel nauseous.
Professor Sun then brought an old Chinese medicine doctor. Before coming over, the doctor had taken a shower and changed clothes, and Wang Mei personally went to pick him up. The old doctor prescribed some medication to help with the pregnancy, but before Lin Xiao could take even a sip, she vomited again.
After yet another round of vomiting, Lin Xiao called Lin Qi in tears.
Lin Qi reassured her that it was normal for women to feel this way during pregnancy; it would get better and she shouldn't be too delicate.
Lin Xiao wanted to slap herself hard for not understanding that sooner; why couldn't she just accept it?
Li Hao called Lin Xiao every day. After working late shifts, she was so exhausted that she barely had the energy to respond to him. He wanted to find time to return home, but he was still in the planning stages and had already been back to Beijing twice; he could only sacrifice his small family for now.
The fragrance of Jin Qiu Yue and Dan Gui filled the air. Lin Xiao felt like she had finally come back to life after enduring the morning sickness.
Professor Sun sighed in relief; for four months, she had watched Lin Xiao suffer from nausea and felt anxious for her.
Now that Lin Xiao felt better, she realized how aimless her days were. The Retired Cadres Office was indeed a retirement department in name only; the Director was old, as was the Deputy Director, along with two researchers in their sixties—then there was her.
During the day, the Director often suffered from high blood pressure and would spend a couple of days in the hospital. The other three followed suit; when issues arose regarding personnel or benefits, those retired cadres never approached the retirement office directly but went straight to the Human Resources Department or Finance Department instead.
After Lin Xiao arrived, she experienced pregnancy-related fatigue and lacked the energy to focus on her work, so she just managed to get by. Now that her energy has returned, she realizes that the retirement department is a complete mess compared to the cadre department and the Propaganda Department.
Lin Xiao logged into the internal network to look up the regulations from her superiors regarding retirement work over the past three years. She carefully organized the implementation opinions and situations within her unit.
She obtained a list of retired cadres and optimized it. Previously, the list had ranked leaders at the bureau level first, followed by those at the division level, without any clear hierarchy based on positions.
Lin Xiao reviewed the master list, noting that different ranks had different formats. She then categorized it further, creating a new list for deceased comrades.
After deeply analyzing the restructured list, Lin Xiao spent ten days compiling a report titled "Analysis of Recent Situations of Retired Cadres in the Provincial Organization Department," which she submitted to the Deputy Director.
The Deputy Director reviewed it for a long time and then said to Lin Xiao, "You should show this to the Director."
Lin Xiao took it to the Director. The Director put on his reading glasses and examined it for a while before saying, "Good."
The Old Director initially thought to say that it didn't need to be so complicated as long as they didn't make mistakes. However, he quickly realized that he was nearing retirement and that this was beneficial for himself. He read through it carefully again and provided several suggestions for revisions before submitting it to the Minister.
